OPINON: Sony Not Offering Performance Upgrade To Ghosts For Free Feels Anti-Consumer

Is Sony justified charging $10 more for performance upgrade when other platforms do it for free?

Still hot asf, though.

Being that the thread title is totally false shouldn't it be changed? They already gave a performance upgrade for free a while back.

I think that was just 60fps.

Native play patch would be.... new high res textures, higher resolution, more anti-aliasing etc.... but we have no details.

So based on the blog post announcement from Sony if you currently own the PS4 version of the game you have to pay $29.99 to get all of the enhancements on PS5, right? I guess it's not the end of the world since you get some DLC but it does seem sort of crappy to lock the other enhancements, like 3D audio upgrades, DualSense support and 4K video options behind that paywall. I wonder why there isn't a path to get the upgrades without the DLC? Or did I miss i?

I'm not sure you missed it. I read it the same way. It could be that they aren't going to offer the non-Director's Cut as a native PS5 app. The only hope is that Death Stranding wasn't clarified very well until a later tweet advertising the $9.99 upgrade.

Performance is the framerate and that was already done for free, the performance on PS5 is 60fps in the "4K" mode so we are getting the best version of the game possible for no extra charge already. If the person wanted to say "not giving added PS5 specific features for free" that would be accurate, performance has already been done.

Sony's blog post specifically mentions "4K resolution options** and framerates targeting 60 FPS. **4K display required" in their blog post concerning PS5 enhancements. That would insinuate there's additional enhancement in the PS5 version under PS5 exclusive features. Or does the blog post mean something different?

It isn't anti-consumer.
It's just greedy. Sony isn't dependant on that 10$ from upgrade but they want to extract every penny from their customers and they are willing to eat it up.

When fucking EA were able to release two next-gen patches (one for backwards compatibility and one native) for Jedi Fallen Order for free, it's clear that Sony could do that too. If they wanted,

This is the epitome of consumer entitlement.

This is a game that already recieved a free PS5 patch last year that boosted the game's resolution and performance to 60 FPS. This is a game from the same team that released a whole multiplayer expansion for this game for free, along with tons of other free updates since launch. $10 for a complete PS5 makeover /remaster isn't asking for much.

And, this game is being compared to DOOM Eternal? A game with various forms of paid DLC and microtransactions??

You guys gotta be stupid.

Nobody cares. Of course companies want to make money and dont care about us. Some may give that you illusion but in the end all they see is dollars. You always have the final choice though. You can always stop supporting sony if you feel that strongly about it.

So what do you say to people who paid $60 for it on PS4 at release and now have to pay another $30 to unlock the new enhancements on PS5? Because it's only $10 if you buy the director's cut on PS4 and then upgrade to director's cut on PS5 later. Those people will have paid $90 for what new PS5 players are getting for $70. Those people aren't stupid to complain.

Not any consumer, but certainly not as consumer friendly as most of the industry.

These features will be coming to PC anyway, so it’s not like they needed an excuse to implement them

EA and Sony are similar in a lot of ways

The good
  • They release a bunch of free upgrades
  • They add a heap of free content to older games

The bad
  • They charge stupid prices for next gen games or lock them behind an ultimate/collectors/directors cut edition
  • They love paid remasters of old games

Even EA didn't charge for next-gen upgrades last year.
But they figured out they can get away with it, because Activision and Take-Two got away with it witch Black Ops Cold War and NBA 2K21

They're paying $90 for a $70 PS5 game and a $20 expansion. Which is the market price for current gen games and the same price as Horizon DLC, Bloodborne DLC, etc.

The $10 difference is to close the market price gap between last gen and this gen.

What's stupid is comparing this $10 pricing situation with Ghost's PS5 upgrade path, with a game that extracts money from players in various ways including microtransactions (the developers promised there would be no microtransactions, but instead lied).

I wish it was $10, the PS5 upgrade here in Aus is $40 AUD, that's nearly $30 USD.. Granted it comes with some DLC but who cares, it's too much for people who already own the game!

And we all know that the DLC is just content they cut out of the game originally so they could give you some extra content later to make additional profit.

Lol at people jumping to defend a company charging for what their direct competitor offers for free.

Anyway, "anti consumer" is hyperbolic. It's not like they are taking away features from PS4 overs or something like that.

It's just a shitty move from their part. Something that would make me as a customer feel unappreciated.

Sony is slowly going the Nintendo route. Turning into a shitty company you put with because they have some great people making games for them.
For the life of me, I do not get this mentality. It takes work to create extra content, and PS5 games go for more money. So you pay an extra 10 bucks to cover those PS5 specific differences. They already gave out a free 60fps boost if you played the original game on PS5. Getting the res bump, the Japanese lip sync (this is HUGE IMO, especially as a big fan of all the old samurai movies this game is basically based on), the expansion pack etc ... for 30 bucks? No brainer to me.

What is wrong with charging money for your product?

Do you have a job you expect to be paid by?

I paid $60 for the luxury of playing Ghost at launch. Are you breaking the news that I could buy the same game for cheaper if I waited over a year?

We literally got 60fps at CBR 4K upgrade for PS5 when playing PS4 version many months ago. The directors cut literally has Iki island expansion along with haptics/triggers etc. The resolution/fps in directors cut isn't a selling point for me since it's already there in the OG PS4 version when played on PS5 version.

EA was the one big player to skip remakes last gen. Mass effect is really the only notable one, and then like burnout. I’d hardly call that a habit.

If Sony was truly "For The Players", they would have rewarded loyal customers who purchased the game with the free PS5 upgrade and then simply sold the new content separately as DLC. This "Director's Cut" should have been for people who never bought the game on PS4 originally.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered...one of the laziest money grabs

My View Exactly...its a first party studio

Oh another Phil Spencer is the best for the industry thread.
I dont mind pay for updates if I have a console of 400 bucks I am sure that the software, remakes, remasters or updates will with cost

So i'm trying to understand. My 60 fps PS4 version running in backwards compat can get the expansion for just 20 bucks and still play that at 60fps on my PS5 right?

Cause If that other 10 dollars is just dualsense stuff and lip sync or w/e then I'd rather just pay the 20 for the actual content. Is that possible? I really just want that new singleplayer content, I been waiting on news of real SP Content for the game moreso than dualsense capability lol

sony at this stage, is too arrogant and thinks their fans will put up with any cash grabs they put out, imo.

as someone else said, sony is being run by headless chickens basking
on their success

They already patched the game for free to run at 60 FPS on PS5.

That actually makes the $10 extra look worst, because then you have to really ask what the extra money is for. Japanese lip-sync and Dualsense functionality? The former is very questionable and the latter is just a flat-out bad reason for charging $10 more IMO.

Sigh, another thread implying Sony is the only one charging for upgrades...

Nah, they are definitely not the only ones doing it and I wasn't trying to imply that in the OP. But it's just the most recent example of a publisher doing it with a console game, and in Sony's case they're the only ones to have upped the price of their current-gen 1P content.

They're the only platform holder that's emboldened/encouraged third-parties to also bump up their base prices for current-gen games by doing so themselves, that puts them in a unique situation.

I don't think anyone is really gripping the DLC price. It's the 10 dollar PS5 tax.

Exactly. Paying for expansion content, especially substantive story campaign content, is not an issue (as long as it's not the price of a full game). It's for the performance upgrades...not even that, really, because apparently Ghosts is already checkerboard 4K60 on PS5.

So the $10 is literally for Japanese lip sync and Dualsense. That's crazy; might as well add $5 on top for the new box art!

This is how consoles work. As long as consumers tolerate it, these companies will charge you for the most basic of things.

You pay to access your own internet on all consoles now. Now you'll be paying to change some sliders.

Well hopefully more people do (constructively) bring up their issues with such things going forward. Well, they generally don't have an issue doing it when Microsoft does some stupid business practice or attempts to. There is still more resistance to affording Sony that same type of criticism when they make dumb business choices or don't keep to their word on things (it's still crazy that there's no update for 3P SSD installs for PS5, eight months post-launch).

Nintendo seems to have the most built-in resilience to criticism for questionable business practices, but I think in a few years time that will start to slowly change. And at that point we could start seeing more sane choices from the platform holders on some of these things. And it's very important for platform holders to set the standard here because that will greatly influence what third-parties try to do and what they think they can get away with.

But again, that just makes the $10 extra look even more questionable. What is the extra $10 getting you? Lip sync and haptics/trigger support? How is that worth 1/6 of the cost of the actual game AND the dynamic 4k/60 support for PS5, already covered in the $60 that ALSO contains the expansion story content?

It is simply not a justified extra cost, in my honest opinion.

So which other platforms are doing it for free for all their games?

On Sony's side, you have games like Miles Morales and Sackboy, where you also get the PS5 version upgrade free.

On Xbox you got a free upgrade for Gears 5, Tactics? and FH4 and that's it, as far as I know. They also barely released any games last gen to upgrade and none this gen, thou....

On the Switch, you are paying full price for Wii/Wii U upgrades, and sometimes have to buy Amiibos additionally to get QoL improvements.

They already offered a free performance patch though (and multiplayer). If you don't care about the new features of this version you can simply not buy it.

You dont know what anti comsumer means. Same goes for most people in this thread. Being subjectively overpriced and being anti comsumer are to very different things.
Bad pricing is Anti-Consumer and its not just a sony thing
here is the actual definition

Definition of anti-consumer

: not favorable to consumers : improperly favoring the interests of businesses over the interests of consumersanti-consumer practices

$30 for a new island to explore and more ps5 features hell yeah the game was tight. if it is really 15 hour long like the rumor says, thats also great since some of these games nowadays are close to that long and cost $60
