Square Temporarily Paused Digital Sales of Final Fantasy XIV Due to So Many People Trying to Play

ManaByte

Digital copies for Final Fantasy 14: Online Complete Edition were temporarily paused according to reports online and verified by IGN. While sales have since resumed for Final Fantasy 14, the pause may have been caused by the MMORPG's exploding popularity.

Over the weekend, social media users reported that the Square Enix Store listing for digital PC copies of Final Fantasy 14: Online were grayed out, and replaced with a “Waitlist” button. Final Fantasy 14 was still under “Waitlist” when IGN checked the store listing this morning, though digital sales have since resumed.

The Asmongold effect.

Blows my mind that an online game where you have to pay a monthly fee + have to buy the damn thing is so succesful at this day and age

Where every online game is free while aiming money by microtransactions

FF XIV model is archaic, but I think that it working tells a lot about the game's quality

Yes thers crossplay between playstation and pc players. Game plays very well on Playstation, the UI is fully costumisable and well adapted to be played with just a controller, and you can even use the touchpad from the controller as a mouse, that is usefull to adjust some stuff.

But if you like to chat with ur party members or guild, then PC, as everyone chats by text so keyboard makes it easier.

I played it on PS4 and i highly recommend it. One of the best MMOs out there with so much content. Just have in mind that the base game is kinda mediocre. Once you finish the quests from the base game and go to the expansions and get flying mounts is when stuff gets really good.

Story is amazing 1st expansion onwards and while the base game is just OK it is worth it to push through, boss fight mechanics are a lot fun and there's a ton of side content if you get tired of it (Gold Saucer, etc). Highly recommend trying it out as the free trial is the base game + 1st expansion permanently. There is crossplay and while I only play on PC, I heard the console versions are perfectly designed for controller.

There is a level-capped trial on PC. You can play the game for free for up to 40 hours of content if not more, and then transfer your progress if you wish to buy/sub.
Not sure if there is one on PS4.

P2W like Rocket League or Fortnite? Philosophy? What the fuck are you talking about?

FF XIV uses an old model of monthly subscription like old MMOs like WoW used to, and I find it interesting that it became so popular since paying for the base game + expansions + monthly subscription can become quite a lot for many. And yet here we are.

The F2P model is way more popular nowadays, and there are tons of free games without P2W shit.

FF XIV going against F2P and winning like this is very nice to see. Yoshi-P and team deserves it.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

40 hours of rushing through things while doing no side quests and only focusing on a single job / class. If you take your time and do multiple classes and such, the free trial could easily be a 100 hour experience. Probably 500 hours if you max out all the classes and do all the story content.

Best story and music in any final fantasy game maybe ever. You can make one character and use that same character to try every job and craft in the game. The end game content is amazing and the gameplay loop is satisfying. I main paladin, gun breaker, dark knight, red mage, summoner Machinist and astrologian. Soon to try reaper. The pvp is instanced and fun. The dungeons and raids are fun and can be challenging. Graphically I think it’s time for a complete overhaul or engine change as it’s starting to look dated. Some areas can still be very beautiful. My biggest complaint is summoner not feeling like smn from FFXI but that’s a personal nit pick. To someone else’s comment about the monthly subscription, I think the overall quality is a direct result of having to pay a sub. I’ve tried every free mmo out there and nothing comes close. The only free mmo I can get into is BDO.

I have been playing MMOs for two decades now. Its combat is similar to WoW (Hotkey combat), however it's story is a multi-layered JRPG masterpiece, IMO. Its doesn't wildly change up the progression systems every expansion, but expands upon what exists and gives players numerous side activities to do if they choose. It respects the players time and makes you want to waste time inside of its world. It's my go-to MMO.

Also its available on PC and PS4/PS5, crossplay exists, and it plays well enough on consoles that you can easily do the highest level content with a controller.

F2P is a cancer. DOTA 2 usually has good F2P system but many of the good cosmetics costs hundreds of dollars. Hundreds of dollars for some pixels that can be copied to infinity.

Turns out F2P is just a system where whales are the target market and normal people don’t matter. At least $15 month everyone has access to the same content (minus a couple of other affordable cosmetics.)

Are you fucking blind? Or just happy trigger to go "GOTCHA" on a post before actually taking the time to process a sentence in a comprehensive manner?

He's making a comparison, and commending the game for making it work in the 21st century - what the hell are you boiling over about?

I just wish they allowed it to be crossplay without having to buy it on every platform.
Oh they make you buy it multiple times on XIV? On XI if you owned a console version you were able to download the PC client for free and sign in with your console account no problem. The console versions were retired a while back though so it's PC only these days.

You have to buy a copy for each platform you want to play it on. Only exception is PS4/PS5 (for now at least).

It's even worse than that - for example, they consider "Steam" to be it's own platform - so if you buy the game on Steam, you have to launch it through Steam always and you can only buy the expansions or game time directly through Steam. And if you buy the PC version, you can't launch or play the game through Steam.

This is made even worse if you want to play on multiple platforms, as you have to buy the expansion packs for each as well.

Most astonishing is that FF14 itself is over a decade old (hiatus not withstanding), and lifts almost everything from the nearly 2-decade old WoW. Honestly vanilla FF14 had a better combat system than Realm Reborn, problem was it was a pre-alpha build with no balancing whatsoever. It was like FF11, you gained TP from auto attacks and spent TP to fire off abilities. They should have balanced TP to come much slower, and abilities to be much more meaningful (like 11's weapon skills--but perhaps 2 or 3 times more frequent). Unfortunately as it existed in vanilla, TP was literally endless and you could spam abilities faster than the server could recognize, which was why everyone said it sucked and Yoshida just straight lifted WoW combat to "fix" it. We really need something fresh in the MMO space, smashing hotkeys is dated and tired as fuck. Seems people just want brain dead content and ever increasing numbers. Current MMO design is the potato chip of videogames.

Steam have their own currency system peopel can pay for the sub with steam money, thus it is separate from normal pc client.

the vast majority of F2P hasn't been P2W for a long time, lol

i still think monthly fees are way worse than cosmetic MTs supporting a free game
My problem with FF14 is that it also has cosmetic DLC on top of a montly fee. Reason why i stoped playing after my 1st month that came with the game expired.

The game has alot of content and is the best MMO i played, but the monetization is savage. Pay for the game, pay for montly fee to keep playing the game u already paid for, pay for especial costumes, mounts, house decorations and other DLCs. And if you managed to buy a house ingame and dont login in the game for a certain amount of time (1 or 2 months) u lose the house, that costs a shitload of ingame money.

Still no excuse to make you buy separate copies for PC, PS4/PS5, and Mac. WoW doesn't do that across PC/Mac.
Are you saying developer don't deserve to get pay for their work? And who actually run the mac version since they can easily run wine and use the pc version. Using Mac client is a choice.

When you have a monthly fee AND cash shop items, making people buy multiple copies of a game just to use their account on another device is greed, not paying for development costs.

You could make it offline and it would stand on its own as a fantastic single player FF title, easily putting recent FF titles to shame. Worth playing for the story alone. Only stay if you like the MMO grind.

FFXIV has amazing story from initial troubles to current success. It's not really game for me, but looks like for many people it is.

That's the right thing to do if you are short on server resources.

For both consumers and your reputation.

It's still amazing how many games launch without basically endless cloud scaling available.. like what provider are they using that really maxed out their scaling capabilities without having to wait for like an actual physical server upgrade?

I disagree. FF XIV is not archaic, the industry has simply tried to move on to predatory free to play with microtransactions models that is new not modern. A country getting destroyed and the new state rebuilding by removing health care is not modern compared to an archaic previous health care system.

The game is good and it is not constantly trying to squeeze your or manipulate you into paying more and more and more after the first free hit… meant first download :). Same thing about the even older model of buying a game full price and enjoying it vs the evolution towards F2P that games like NBA 2K took…

I gave the free level cap a go last year on PS4. I enjoyed it. The biggest criticism I have is the Ui/UX design. My god it’s up there with some of the worst I’ve ever seen. I assume it’s because it was designed for PC and they didn’t want to design a whole new HUD for console.

If you’re willing to put time and effort into the game I’d say it’s well worth a shot. But be aware it has the MMO trappings of being an absolute time sink. An entire evening can go in the blink of an eye.

Uh, what MMO doesn't have those things? FF14's cash shop is literally the most non-intrusive I've ever seen. Nothing on there is even close to necessary, and there's hundreds of mounts in game to get along with the thousand pieces of "glamour".

Weird complaints to stop playing an MMO. You didn't know there was a monthly fee going into it? Lol
