Let's Address The Elephant In The Room. Switch OLED is ONLY $50 cheaper than a PS5

You can put the best software right now on a 2013 Nokia and it won't sell for anything close to the price of an Iphone 10, never mind 12X.
Also that mythology around the supremacy of Nintendo's software is starting to reach conspiracy proportions. What is that absolutely outerwordly experience that Nintendo's games provide? If I go to a store right now, I will find Luigi's mansion at almost twice the price of each of the last 2 GOTY winners, TLOU2 and Sekiro. I don't need to say anything else about their pricing, whether it's for soft or hardware.
Nintendo has been testing their customer's sanity for as long as they could and will continue to do so until they finally speak with their wallet like they did for the Game Cube and Wii U. It's as simple as that. When gamers stop being silly enough to pay the price of 2021 technology for 2013 technology + Oled, Nintendo will backtrack at the same second. They won't pull out the "Our software justifies any hardware price" argument that you're trying to make. Even nintendo's PR isn't that arrogant.
This GOTY winners bullshit that is fuel for fanboy wars is not as important as you might think for the average consumer. If I go to my girlfriend and tell her, "Look, TLOU 2 won a gazillion of awards so it's better than any Nintendo game", she will look at me asking "wtf is tlou2? Game awards? GOTY?". If I show her Mario, well, she knows it and wants to play it. She doesn't give a shit about awards, she knows Mario, she played it as a little child, she knows Nintendo. She barely knows playstation. The average consumer knows Mario, knows Zelda, knows Pokemon. TLOU? Most of them have no fucking idea. That's why you games like Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Zelda and whatever selling millions upon millions. Not only that, but the Switch is "the thing" to have now. Yesterday I had a dinner at my place, and my friends that don't even game asked me to let them try play with the Switch (they already know the console), some Mario Galaxy. After that, they played Ring Fit Adventure. And after that my friend's gf asked my friend to buy one.

Nintendo has games that people cherish and have known for a long ass time. And Nintendo doesn't need to say anything, they know that their software will sell hardware. Forums are not how the world operates - you're someone that is into games more than the average consumer. You make your decisions based on points that an average consumer doesn't care. They want to play Mario, they want to play Pokemon, fuck all those GOTY awards.

So, once again, yeah, Nintendo software sells their hardware and they keep pushing the price up because they want to see how far people will go to play their franchises. The Switch became the console for everyone, became the "hot shit" at the moment, so everyone wants to see what the fuss is all about.

I too get butthurt brands don’t conform to my expectations.
Not butthurt just disappointed. I waited a long time for this upgrade i bought my OG Switch in 2018 it now over 3 years later the hardware is at it limit it need a upgrade badly. Games releasing for it now is at their limits barely hitting 720p sub 30fps it really a painful experience playing some of the more recent release for the Switch. I just want better i was not expecting 4k in a handheld but at least 1080p and maybe 1440p upscaled in docked mode with dlss, but all that was just a pipe dream as Nintendo has continue to show time after time they will make no upgrade of performance any kind.

Then explain why the Game Cube and Wii U. flopped. I mean those consoles certainly had Pokemon and Zelda. The facts are stubborn and in this case they prove that people don't massively buy something even way overpriced just because it runs Mario.

GameCube and WiiU didn't have a real pokemon game. WiiU didn't have a real Zelda game. But both consoles didn't necessarily fail because of the lack of games. WiiU was a marketing disaster. GameCube had to compete with the PS2, the juggernaut console in many ways.

Firstly, this is how supply and demand works. I'm sure Nintendo would've loved to increase the Switch price even earlier. Probably waited until OLED screens were just cheap enough to maximize their margins. Secondly, just about everything on PS5 can be played on PS4 or PC, so the value proposition is much worse than a Switch, regardless of tech specs.

The oft repeated notion that it doesn’t matter because Nintendo fans will buy Nintendo consoles regardless of price/quality isn’t true. The WiiU and the GameCube were not selling despite price drops and low prices in comparison to other consoles at the time. The Switch is selling out because its value justifies its price.

When gamers stop being silly enough to pay the price of 2021 technology for 2013 technology + Oled,
The Nvidia X1 is from 2015, making it 2015 technology. And if you really want to get down to it, the latest revision uses the X1+, making it effectively 2019 technology + OLED.

Well i just hope that the people who already own a Switch won't go out and buy this OLED model. I know the people that don't have a Switch yet will but the ones that already owned a Switch need to skip this. It won't do much but atleast try to send Nintendo a message that pathetic upgrade are not justify anymore.

Perceived value and cost of tech/ materials are two separate aspects of a product.
I know, but the perceived value is still important to the pricing. If I compare this to a movie: For 15 bucks (20 in some places, and even more if you buy something to snack) I get around 2 hours of entertainment. That's 7.5 bucks for each hour.
A Wii provides me with thousands of hours of entertainment, a solid library of games, plenty of modding capabilities, a unique controller, 100% BC with the Gamecube for 250 bucks. So even if a Wii only cost 150 bucks to produce (maybe a little more due to the controller), I definitely didn't feel ripped off paying 250 bucks for it as it provided me with enough value to make to price justified.

The OLED Switch is filled with ancient tech, most of it outdated before the original Switch even released. A PS5 Digital is clearly the better value here while Nintendo’s goal is the highest profit margin possible.

The OLED panel is from 2015 and costs about $8. One of Samsung’s oldest panels they still produce and have barely anyone purchasing them. Nintendo went into the clearance bin for OLEDs. It’s embarrassing.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
So what? The PS4 and Switch were priced pretty much the same, for most of the cycle where they were both on sale. The comparison itself doesn't matter, as long as it's a mass market price in either case.

Yea, it is not a great value proposition. Also I'm gonna buy one.

I have no idea why anyone who isn't a shareholder for these companies actually cares about it.

If you don't agree, just, like... don't buy it? Nintendo has been offering underpowered hardware for premium pricing for decades now. It's making them money. This is their business model and they're not going to change it as long as it works.

Why get upset about what you can't change?

At this point, it's ridiculous that Sony, MS, or some other company has not made any attempt to capitalize on this hole in the market. 3 renditions of Switch now, including this dinosaur covered in an OLED and you're telling me there is no market for a new Vita!? If Nintendo had any competition in this space, they would not pull this...

Could be argued that complaining on the internet actually leads to people not wanting to buy the product and then, a change in the company's approach. It worked with Xbox after the internet flamed the hell out of MS's philosophy after the Xbox one reveal!

I consider that the main issue isn't the low-powered hardware, or the old OLED tech.
For me, the reason why I kept well away from a Switch, despite its merits, is the absolutely dogshit quality of its infamous thumbsticks, and the generally piss-poor QC of its joycons.

"I bought a bike for $1.000.000,00, but I used it for 200h, so I got my money worth"

This is not the point. Value is subjective, yes.

But OP and some people here are questioning the tech/price balance, which is certainly worth discussing.

I believe that even the "Apple fee" is more justifiable than this, since they use a lot more proprietary tech than Nintendo with the Switch.

It should cost less. But it sells like hotcakes. So I cant blame Nintendo for saying yes to money.

Nintendo can release new hardware and charge a premium for it if they want, I don't mind, but I refuse to pay launch day prices for a console that's over 4 years old. Greedy greedy greedy. Honestly, I haven't kept up with Switch news. Is a new OLED screen what people have been asking for? Seems random. I just want a switch that I can connect to a tv that doesn't cost $300 bucks. This may be the first time I don't buy a Nintendo console.

Blame the idiots who complain but still buy. All Nintendo sees is money coming their way, which to them means one thing; people like it.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already. I'd love for someone to do a "best guess" analysis of the Switch and Switch OLED manufacturing costs in 2021. With the kind of chips inside, storage size, screen, I wouldn't be surprised if both models cost Nintendo between 100 and 150USD to produce.

If you stop using words like Painful you'll find that people might stop assuming you've been hurt.

That's because literally no one wanted that. It was outlandishly anti-consumer. People want the Switch, be it OLED or not, overpriced or not. So they'll (probably?) pay up.

😂 It’s not like Nintendo is wrong. People do like the switch.

One day people will realize that games are more important to people than tech.

I bet if it was more expensive than a Ford people would scream BUT CAN FORD PLAY MARIO.

Just straight up retarded

After waiting 6 years I was looking forward to get a Switch Pro with DLSS, faster CPU, faster GPU, an OLED with a 1080P screen and the capability to upscale smoothly to 4K while on the Dock.

Would have gladly gave Nintendo $400 - $500 for 1 but Nintendo rather resell old hw for tons of profit over giving us better tech with smaller margins. Since people lap up what ever Nintendo throws at us I guess we'll never get the Switch I hope for...

With Nintendo not releasing any games this year, they'll need to make up the lost $$$$ through hardware sales instead.
I mean, they have a game coming out this week that's probably going to sell at least 2 million copies.

I keep trying to not think you're a troll, but you make it hard man. Everyone gotta troll sometimes, but c'mon dude.

Lol misread week for year :messenger_grinning_sweat:
Yes, you're so smart to add the word "new" to your previous post that I was criticizing. No one will ever notice that goal post being moved.

You do you…I just personally find Nintendo’s output the past few years to be abysmal especially since they only have one platform to support.

I had much higher expectations but it’s clear Nintendo isn’t really catering to AAA tastes much anymore

It's an ever so slightly updated system over the original. I think it's primarily meant for people that don't own one yet. Or, those that are interested regardless. IMO the price increase is justified. From a business perspective, normal Switches still sell at $300, so why drop the price? 🤷🏻‍♂️

some of you underestimate the portability factor for why the switch is killing it. nintendo own the handheld market just as much as sony own the home console market. nintendo know that. they dont need power. all they need is portability.

how much you think switch would have sold now if it was only docked and had no handheld mode?

Too bad it doesn't actually address the issues that have kept people from buying a Switch.

I waited for a real Pro version of the Switch but as you stated this is more for people that don't already own one instead of current owners or people that might want something with better specs.
This was what I was hoping for:
I was hoping to get a Switch Pro with DLSS, faster CPU, faster GPU, an OLED with a 1080P screen and the capability to upscale smoothly to 4K while on the Dock.

I was also willing to pay for it.
Why Nintendo refuses to cater to core gamers is something I don't understand.
All they have to do is charge more for the better HW and they can even have a better margin of profit on the Pro model that's ok.
Just let people that want something better pay for it. Jeez man.

That's something a lot of us will never really be able to answer, it's just Nintendo doing what Nintendo wants to. I'm sure I speak for a lot of people when I say I'd LOVE to see a point where Nintendo just goes all in on next-gen hardware. But honestly, I don't know if that will ever happen. :(
