Only 21% of Players Have Defeated Returnal’s Final Boss So Far

It has now been a bit over two months since the release of Returnal, though based on the game’s trophy date, only 21.3% of players have defeated the game’s final boss so far. Specifically, only 21.3% of players have gotten the “Inner Darkness” achievement for defeating Ophion, the game’s final boss (as of this article’s writing).

While Ophion is the final boss in Returnal, defeating it does not mean you are already done with the game as there is a third act that can be unlocked by collecting specific items. Given that the game’s third act does not really bring much in the way of new levels and enemies, for our standards, Returnal’s completion rate is at 21.1%(which is the percentage of players who have finished Act 2 based on trophy data).

Though for full completion, only 8.9% of players have gotten to the game’s “true ending.”

I guess it takes a special breed of player to platinum Returnal... 😏

There will obviously be another Switch eventually, but I think it will be a Switch 2 rather than a Pro. It will almost certainly be compatible with the current Switch library, but it will also have exclusive titles (which a Pro probably wouldn't).

Edit: I might have clicked the wrong thread. Possibly.

So on Sacred Symbols, I think Colin said he was over 40 hrs not done but a friend finished in like 8 for one reason, RNG roll(got a certain weapon). Thats not good design in anyway.

20% is not bad. Not great either for your AAA first party either. Sony's first party games usually have a 40-50% completion rate.

The lack of real progression in this game needed to be fixed at launch. The developer is being stubborn about it for no reason. The game is already very hard. No need to make it harder by not allowing users to save.

Going by the Wario64 tweet the other day seems like most people retunaled it to the store before finishing it. $30 for the used version.
"I need a new PS5 game. Let me check out that returnal game I've been hearing about!"

"What is this shit."

Bless Housemarque. I've always enjoyed their games, but they're far from mainstream. Unbelievable how they got a $70 high budget arcade game made.

I hear you. I’ve been saying that we don’t deserve a game like Returnal. It’s a total UFO. Super high-production values for an arcade shooter with some Silent Hill 2 fuckery for unexpected emotional punches. Too good to be true.

What time is it?
I'm part of the 21% club. It's also where I stopped playing. It is mostly let down by poor implementation of rogue mechanics (breaking runs for narrative purposes, limited room variety which makes every generated map feel same'y, length of runs is entirely too long). The Housemarque DNA is solid though.

This is actually high for a game that just came out but I believe this game needs 'accessibility' options like in Control. Health modfier, checkpoints and fast travel etc so everyone can enjoy it.

Disable trophies as if I care.

I found the 3rd boss way harder than the final boss.
Awesome game and platinum’d it. Looking forward to some dlc
Yeah third boss was also the hardest one for me. I was close to giving up after I don't know how many retries.

That’s MUCH higher than I expected.
Doesn't have to be that unusual if the game was bought mostly by the fans of these types of games. Souls games were getting high completion percentages as well before they've gotten more mainstream.

I see. I still find that really high considering the game’s reputation with difficulty and much less challenging games received a comparable or even lower completion rates. Then again, I find Returnal much more unforgiving and difficult than any of the Souls style games, so it’s probably me.

Yup. I got to the third boss pretty quickly after the game's launch but been stuck in Biome 3 since.
Didn't play the game for a while and started it couple of days ago. I've died in the third Biome now about 5-10 time without even getting to the boss.
I’ve gotten to the boss several times, and the 3rd wave a couple of times but die each time. Even after watching videos for tips and tricks. Game is punishing

I highly recommend you give this interview a listen. If you do and still don't understand why is there no save function in the game - I don't know what else to tell you.

I bought the game on release and haven’t yet completed it, but I will in time. It’s just that R&C and FF7 I have interrupted my play through.

I got to the third biome and shelved it….game is not really that fun when you realise it’s the same enemies over and over….felt like god of war without the good story

I’m not sure that is entirely true. I am currently trying to beat the 5th Biome and I don’t recall there being a repeat of enemies, other than the flying robot basts from Biomes 3 and 5. Certainly not between Biomes 1-3.

The robots were the only different thing in third area but it felt exactly the same as the last 2…..I dunno maybe the game isn’t for me..I did enjoy demon souls though so the whole die and repeat isn’t the issue I don’t think
