When it was released I was watching the Avowed reveal

with a friend, and even though he hasn't played a single Pillars game he came out of it seriously hyped for Avowed.
Now, I'm definitely a fan of Obsidian's work and I'm looking forward to this, but I couldn't understand his excitement.

Online, the general sentiment was the same. People who didn't know anything about the devs or their previous games were getting excited over what was, in my opinion, concept art in motion.

I'm not immune to getting hyped over a trailer, but usually there's something to be hyped for. This time though, it seems people are latching onto the 15-or-so seconds of first person sword-wielding and magic-symbol-drawing, with people saying it reminds them of Skyrim?

But apart from the perspective, I just don't see it (pun unintended).
There have been several fantasy games with this perspective. Of course, none of them are recent titles, and none look this good.
But is that really it?

I know it's set in Eora long before the Pillars games take place, and having finished both of those games, that fact is what excites me.
But if I didn't know or care about that? I would file this under 'cool, let's wait till they have something to show'

What exactly excites you about Avowed?

Nothing so far really. Not that I did it on purpose, but I never got to play and finish any of their games outside of trying out Fallout Vegas for about 30 minutes on game pass.

Same can be said about Bethesdas rpgs or western rpgs in general. I always prefered jrpgs.

Still need to finish Witcher 3, after kinda stopping 10 hours or so in.

Yeah loved the Pillars games. Otherwise, a first person game in that world doesn't really get my engine running but I'm definitely gonna keep my eye on it.

The font on the video is deeply inspiring to me. I look forward to seeing more of it.

Obsidian are pretty good and this seems like it's their biggest project probably since KOTOR2.
The Pillar of Eternity games were more in the indie/mid tier range and Outer Worlds also felt and looked like a "AA" game.

So I'm looking forward to what they can with a higher budget and the backing of MS.

A lot of things. But mostly that it's a first-person open world fantasy game. Like Skyrim. There aren't enough of those. I want it.

Not really excited, need to see an actual game first. That being said the fact that it's first person isn't all that appealing to me because 1st person melee combat just isn't as good in most games. The combat in Skyrim sucks, the 3rd person camera and awful animations make the 3rd person option less than amazing but still I like that better than the first person stuff.

Obsidian made two of my favorite games with New Vegas and PoE 2, they are good at crafting stories so I’m excited for what they can do.

Connection to PoE is just icing on the cake although I think it will be mostly lore books and references to the many gods from the PoE lore.

The Outer Worlds was good. Avowed will be even better.

Let's hope so.

With Grounded and Outer worlds 2 being worked on, If avowed fails I might not see another pillars game for a decade, if at all.
On the other hand, if it does end up a massive success, I still might not see another pillars game for a decade.

I ... probably won't see another pillars game anytime soon.

Not excited, but cautiously optimistic that it will be a great game.

Obsidian has talent, and that comes from a PS gamer mainly(I have a decent PC for Xbox exclusives).

Apart from being Obsidian, the shots of the large dungeons got me really curious about it, and it seems they confirmed there are huge dungeons with focus on verticality

I'm not really excited until I actually see something that isn't CGI. It could be good, and I hope it is, but I'll wait to care about it until they actually show gameplay.

I think unveiling a new IP as a CG trailer is a real disservice to getting people excited for it

It makes some sense if its a sequel and people more or less get excited for what they already know about a franchise

But new IPs really should come out of the gates with a big gameplay reveal
If the new IP is in a genre from a known dev and a genre that dev is known for very well, and said dev has a solid track record, I don't see why the IP reveal can't be a CG trailer especially if circumstances (like active development of the main build being siphoned for a gameplay vertical slice) permit it.

Personally I'm interested because it's a new AAA fantasy-based IP, from a dev known for great RPGs, that should push some graphical boundaries for current-gen fidelity when it actually comes. And they finally have a real budget they can work with, that helps too.

Im not really into FP games. Im happy to give it a try though. 🤷‍♂️

Nothing really excites me yet. Obsidian having a budget is exciting.
Me too.

Plus I hope it doesn't give me migraines, hopefully it will have a fov slider and an option to disable the head bob (camera shake while walking) on Xbox, every fps that doesn't have that is basically unplayable for me.

Its funny that you mention it, because i find that the "head bob" actually helps me not to get sick. There is something weird about a character walking really smoothly that sometimes gives me motion sickness

This sometimes also happens to me on Doom (maybe is too smooth or something), when I start to feel something I to have make a pause or change games. However, the head bob just hurts me a lot, I can't play games like Dishonored for more than 30 minutes without wishing the world to end or something. Overall I think I am quite incompatible with first person games. :messenger_anxious:

Next Gen Skyrim coming from Obsidian, saw the badass looking runes and magic and sword scene, stomping of a dragon or whatever that was, and open world, epic RPG from some of the best in the business. That's what excites me about Avowed. The value for my money, bang for my buck will be excellent.

Literally nobody makes games like Skyrim. TOW was like 3/4 as good as a fallout and that was enough it make it one of the better games that year. With a bigger budget I have very high hopes for it

Basically the first four options, I love Elder Scrolls and 1st person fantasy open world so I'm very excited about the idea of the game, and I very much trust Obsidian to not only make it great, but also make it have it's own distinct flavor so it can coexist as a franchise alongside Elder Scrolls without being too similar. I've never played PoE so that doesn't play a part in my excitement but I'm sure the lore and world will be great but the PoE games might be too "heavy" or "intense" for me. Avowed was my most hyped Xbox 1st party game until they want and bought my favorite game studio (BGS if it isn't obvious), but it's still something I'm incredibly hyped for

A first person action rpg set in a fantasy universe on UE5 with great builds is all I want. A good story is just icing on the cake since a good rpg is more about the side quest than main quest anyway. Make the world compelling and I'm in.

There is currently nothing to be excited about since they showed zero gameplay or any indication of its systems.
