New platform launches to bring TV ads to console games

The last thing we ever needed, ads becoming mainstream in video games.

My son plays iOS games and they are not much more than ads with games attached

This post will continue after the ad...

What gets me is the ads are for other games. Game X runs ads for Game Y and vice-versa. How do they make money on this shit? It’s maddening watching him try to play with the constant ads.
Download a VPN based adblocker. Blocks ads system wide by redirecting them locally - no servers involved.

There are a ton of games with ads in them already.

Granted none are as bad as pausing for commercial breaks, but they are still there.

It is different if they are on the background, part of the world. But if they are shoehorned in and screaming "see me", then it is a step too far for me.

In a time where most gaming platforms are reducing loading times to the lowest level in gaming history we have idiots that think people will respond well to being forced to wait.

This should've been proposed when most AAA console games had 30-60+ seconds loading.

Like punching out the Burger King King in a boxing game?

Haven't played such a game, i don't play sports games.

If it doesn't interrupt the game play with blatant commercials - like a mascot holding a huge hamburger in a KO cutscene -, then it's probably not a biggie. Or if a character drives through a city in a cutscene and there's a Calvin Klein advert on a billboard, why not, those exist in the real world too. But if the same character is getting dressed and the camera shows him putting on boxers with a big Calvin Klein text on it, that's too much. Being non-intrusive is the key for me.

I've already predict it.

They try desperately to make money since today model based on 60€ games is unsustainable.

So they tried expansions first. Then DLC. Then microtransactions. Then lootboxes. Now Ads. They will fail and they'll try another one. It's an endless war they aren't willing to lose.

I will absolutely refuse to buy any paid games that features adds in it. On the bright side it would annihilate any feeling of guilt that could prevent me from pirating said games lol. Concerning free to play games, I would have to see on a per game basis if it isn't to intrusive and helps devs while getting rid of exessive microtransactions but I'm just kidding myself (but I never play F2P games soooo...).

Gtf lol adverts are the Bain of existence. Pay us to go add free ! But don’t they get paid by having the adds anyway .

why should we pay you to have something implemented we never asked for ? I’m already paying for the content I’m playing, paying for the machine to play the content on, as well as the internet and online services .

Away you go ! Adverts do not make me want to spend my money 🤨 I may as well wait to get games even cheaper if I have to put up with annoying adverts

if your games are not selling enough do better, add more content even if it means longer gen cycles , don’t release broken games that tarnish your brand and put people off from buying future games.

I’d be happy not to have a huge backlog and then feel defeated but it growing .

time isn’t limitless 😂

This.

Or just set up a Pi-hole https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pi-hole-raspberry-pi/

I imagine there are some routers that can be configured to block adds too.

Maybe this is why the industry is so keen on streaming, if the ad is rendered into the stream, then there will be no blocking it.

I don't play f2p games, and this is just another reason to keep it that way.

If it seeps into other games, it'll actively steer me away from those as well.

Good God...

I don't like where we are heading...

Imagine playing a game just to unwind and then being completely thrown out of your immersion by an ad that makes zero sense to be there about dental floss.

Everyday gaming becomes less about the games and become more and more like just another "product"

I cut the cord in part because advertising annoyed me too much .. I will stay away from games that use this system, and I hope for reviewers that they will knock down at least 8 points from their review score when they come across a game that uses this system... Who am I kidding, the reviews will be great!

This is patently and provably false. It's not unsustainable. They just want MORE.

This a move based on greed not need.

They should do it instead of keep talking about the creation of ads. I think ads can be creative, fun etc. but now they’re making a big deal about it.

Looking at the financial reports of major publishers… you’re wrong. MTX are a literal goldmine.

If its digital billboards say for example in Forza or Need for Speed that change dynamically then I don't care. If it's watch this ad to skip this cutscene or for a perk that will be the end of my gaming days.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
People, we have to stand together against this and DON'T BUY GAMES that include adds. It´s as simple as that.
If they put these types of ads in the latest Madden or Call of Duty game, it would still sell billions of copies. And I would continue happily ignoring them.

I can hear it now. If you guys don’t want to see ads in your games, simply buy the premium collectors edition of our game or the DLC which will allow you to skip or shorten the commercials and ads by inputting a simple code.

Only the generic ads, the ones tailored to us through their data mining are still given of course. Such kind souls they are.

What is false?
Is it false that in 2001 FFX was profitable after 1M copies while now an AAA game is profitable at 5-6?
Or a 100 people was considered a big team, now 300/500?

NO
First it'll be advertisements, then it'll be video game censorship which will damage developer freedom.
Keep this shit FAAAAAAAAAAAAAR away from my games.
