Bungie Devs - 'It's TOO Hot. I cant work!'

Yeah they can just go and rub their crystal ball and get AC in preparation for something like this.

Also, now that the entire PNW is scrambling to get AC in a supply chain shortage for appliances across the globe they can just "get a window unit" ASAP 🤡 very good insight. why didn't they think of that

because the highs in Seattle are usually in the 70s.
Lol nah man they should have done it years ago! I could understand a few of those who just moved there and have sincerely tried to get a unit but haven’t been able to. But in that case they are just in a transitional period between places of living and crying about it isn’t going to do any good. Not to mention they could actually just go into the office. But no they’d rather be cry babies about it.

I literally shared the article minutes ago where Canada was seeing 49.5C Temp (122 F).

And saying Covid was a test to see if earth can work together at the next boss battle, Climate change. Not textbook anymore, this is happening now.

Guess they should have gone to the office.

Few cities.... I mean you list them with the fingers in one hand... had temps below 0 Celcius here at Winter... and yes Winter is around 10-15C that is indeed very cold for us and everybody uses cold warm clothing and sleep with several blankets.

I remember a trip to Curitiba almost 10 years when it had the coldest night of the decade that reached -5C... I could not even type my cellphone (I dropped my cellphone several times) on the airport to ask my friend come get me... it was crazy to the point that I believed I won't support so much cold... it was the coldest I ever faced in my life.
In Sao Paulo people dies on the streets when the temps get around 5C.

people dont seem to understand averages around here...when things go far above or below average people in that area notice and it affects them, but people who are from places where that kind of weather is typical act like its no big deal.

I am pretty sure people still went to work in British Columbia yesterday. Those Tim Hortons didnt close did they?

Cause that's what you do when you work for a AAA game developer and you have to pack it up early for the day. You text Jason Schreier.

Talk about being desperate to be relevant. Nothing in the game industry can happen without involving him in some way.

It's currently 20C here (just checked the temp) and we're in the summertime. (time 17.10)

At 10-15C it's not unusual to see people in just t-shirts and shorts still.

What does people dying from being outside too long in huge heat have to do with commuting to work and working in an AC office?

There's millions of people in BC (and US NW) still going about life working, shopping, driving and commuting to work.

We are in really strong Winter this year in Brasil.

The estimates for today in São Paulo is min 7C and max 15C.... that is basically the coldest we have for the whole year (maybe even the coldest in the last few years).
Some extreme south cities reached below 0C and had Snow a phenomenon so rare here that make people want to go there just to see how Snow is.

It is basically your summer temps :D

For those who dont know. There is a heat wave going on in the U.S Pacific Northwest. Bungie has shutdown production presumably because people are still working from home, and apparently laptops are overheating.

Schreier has taken this opportunity to remind us that Climate Change is real.

I have a completely different take. Make people go back to the offices to work already. If your house doesnt have proper ventilation and your laptop is overheating then get your ass to the office and do your job.

As for Schreier, shouldn't he be looking into why 100 degree weather is preventing video game production at Bungie? Temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees in some parts of the U.S. No one complains. Every office building in the world is equipped to handle those temperatures. Game development is already pretty unproductive with very few next gen games releasing in the next couple of years, everything getting delayed left and right, and we are going to blame it all on climate change now?

I think us millennials are unfairly blamed for a lot of things, but not working because it's too hot has to be the most snowflake thing I have ever heard. It's not like we are out there laying brick in 100 degree weather.

They do not work personally for you.
They need to be safe first, so they may still need to work from home.
They stopped working cause the computers are overheating and the servers are failing, not because of the lack of AC.
Climate change is real and it is affecting us, it will get worse.

You, complaining about this, in this tone, IS the most millennial thing ever.

Seriously too hot. Melting. Remember making a stop in dallas in September. Nearly passed out.
Been raining up here in Sunderland. Saying that, the Alexa under our carport overheated and shut down a few days ago, had to put it in the fridge.

People are laughing about this, but people are dying because of this heat wave. This shit is not funny.
People die of literally anything. If we couldn't laugh at anything because it's deadly to humans then there would be no humor left in the world.

"From being outside too long?" I didn't see that part in the article.

And that's really just the perfect phrase for our Fallout-esque hellscape future. Should've known better than to be outside on planet Earth too long. Might die of a heat stroke .... in Canada.

A couple of our developers took the day off too, citing the heat in their house made it impossible to work.

Maybe it's because I'm from the south, where even $400 a month apartments have air conditioning, but it seems unfathomable to me that a person making $100k a year would not have air conditioning, even in Oregon or Washington.

At some point, you're responsible for paying for basic work from home necessities, like clothes and reliable internet, I would argue that having a working space that wasn't 115 degrees would be on there as well.

I should clarify: I live in Portland now, and both of the apartments I have lived in here have had air conditioning. My AC unit held up every day except Monday, when the temp hit 115. On that afternoon my AC kicked on and stayed on, but only managed to keep the apartment at 74 degrees. Still, not bad.

Canada getting hit by 49C heat at the minute. That would fucking boil me to my Viking bones. Nearly expired in Sorrento during a heatwave almost touching 40C, had to hide in a church.

i'm from the east coast and very used to hot summers, but Sunday and Monday in Seattle were especially shitty

we have a couple of roll up ACs, though they were fighting a losing battle. everyone huddled in the bedroom and watched TV. the rest of the house was 100 degrees, so leaving the room to get a glass of water or let the dog out was a shock to the system

most summers, it just isn't really necessary. we get temps in the 90s but it isn't an every day thing, and humidity is generally pretty low. it's also typically a gradual build up where your body acclimatizes to the heat and in those temps, a window unit or roll up unit do a good enough job to keep you cool.

sat/sun/mon was so hot that temporary AC units couldn't keep up. our house is only 10 years old and doesn't come equipped with central air. anecdotal, but i only know 2 people that do not live in apartments/condos with central air

I'm in Florida too and there are two things that fuck me up:

1). AC goes out
2.) Internet goes out

I've spent thousands on AC repair and replacement over the years. I don't mind it that hot outside for activities but not in my house.
It's why in Florida it is wise to have a standing or window unit as back up just in case of central air outage.

Not just for the heat, but the humidity and potential mold growth in the home.

Uhhh....

I work from home and my corp. office is still closed and might not even reopen for everyone when it does open.

On Monday my home office was 102 degrees, and that was with two ACs running nonstop in other places throughout the house. Outside it was 116. I worked literally right next to one of the ACs for a bit, but I can tell you right now my productivity was crap and I pretty much just called it after a few hours.

Also, Bungie is in the Pacific NW. I'm in the Pacific NW. Saying, "wah wah, I live in a hot area so Bungie should man up" is stupid, because these were record temperatures throughout the region. Nobody, was prepped for this, because there hasn't been a need EVER to be prepped for this.

I live in Upstate New York and it's been in the high 80's to 90's with high humidity level and worked in my PC room that only has a window and no AC. My computer was warm but not hot, why are these people using laptops? Use a desktop thats going to be able to regulate the heat. Also why are these people not back in the office? Restrictions I thought were done?

Also they make watercooled cooling pads for laptops? Company cant send those out to people? Unless your outside working construction or a lineman working on fiber/cable lines seriously this is pussy shit.

Like I get it his laptop overheated, get a pad? Or maybe if your working from home why are you not using a desktop.

I'm scratching my head on this one.

Also temps are back down to the 70-80's. like someone said its a heatwave it happens like once a year. Now temps are back down to normal. They may have another one, but this are rare and happen like I said at least once a year to varying intensities.

I have worked during record breaking temperatures before and unlike these guys, I had to take buses, subways and walk 15 minutes just to get to and from work. I remember not wearing my Bestbuy jersey to work because I would be drenched by the time I got to work. So I would change into my uniform after I got there.

But this is about Bungie's management. Not devs in general. If their infrastructure cant handle a little heat then wtf. If devs cant work from home because they dont have AC then get them in the office. It's about management instead of coddling devs who are literally sitting at home working on laptops.
I bet most of these people don't have cars considering how excellent Seattle's public transit is. The trains can bring you in from* the east, buses and light rail in the city proper. I mean if you want to belittle someones work you could say something like, "Imagine thinking working at best buy was tough labor, try planting trees all summer in south Texas for work". Do you understand how dismissing other people's experiences isn't helpful?
Yeah, average, but what about those days where it reaches up into the 90s?

so, still I say: Get a window unit ya idiots
I don't think it has EVER gotten above 90F until the last 3 or 4 years.

To everyone laughing about how they can't handle it and it's so much hotter where you live, it's coming for us all.

Lol ok you can take your doom and gloom and go back to era

the rest of us who planned accordingly will be using our window units or going into the office because we’re not fucking retarded

I can promise you that 99.99% of offices, restaurants, small businesses, fast food chains and construction workers did not stop working because of record temperatures. Just like how they continued working through the pandemic. The fast food places didnt have the luxury to work from home either.

These are just excuses. Why are these guys who are working from home texting Jason Schreier about getting a free off day? What do they want him to cover exactly? That Bungie's servers are down? That Bungie ISNT forcing them to come to work? That Bungie is so evil they are literally giving them a day off? What's the point of contacting a journalist here?

I get it. Climate Change is real, it's bad and likely the cause of this heatwave, but I have never seen it being used as an excuse for not working. Maybe construction workers or people who have to use public transit to get to work, but WFH people, come on?

The other guy who complained about his laptop overheating posted another tweet saying he moved from the living room to his bedroom which is much more cooler. Like come on. That's how easy of a problem it is to fix.

Man, if they can, it really probably wouldn't hurt to move them back into the office. Or at least offer it to people that don't have AC, or the best AC situations. I mean, that seems more humane then just having them work from home in uncomfortable situations if their homes just aren't built well for the heatwave.

It's wild to be reminded of homes in the US with no AC. Especially when it's impossible to live without here in Houston, TX. Growing up here, the weather has always been wishy washy. But man, the past few weeks have been something, especially since it went from fairly decent and breezy to hot and humid AF in an instant, and before summer even really started, lol.

Yesterday I was both reading and hearing about how window AC units are sold out everywhere or really hard to find right now in various cities and states. I completely believe it.

That being said, man, there are some off takes in here, lmao.

I mean, to mock folks that live in a different state, city, or country that have only really had a specific type of weather for several decades, only to get thrown a complete curveball, are..... honestly kind of out of line. I get a few may seem dramatic, but if the entire state or city is acknowledging it, and a lot of people are reacting to it. It probably really IS a concern.

The Seattle area only has 1 in every 3 homes with Air Conditioning. They have never needed AC really because of the climate. This 116 degree weather is not normal, so obviously they weren't prepared.

It's the same shit but inversed for what happened here in Texas in February with the freeze. The infrastructure wasn't designed to accommodate it.

Shitty jokes and saying people can just work on Destiny 2 in a coffee shop are idiotic.
Dude, the winter storm that happened here was absolutely no joke for this state. Even for the large cities. So many people suffered and passed because they had no power for so long, and their town or city were not used to such things whatsoever. It was completely fucked.

Then seeing folks from colder countries and states going, "Oh boo hoo Texas, lol, grow a pair!" or something similar was sad to see. I'd read it and be like, "Damn, this COULD be a troll, but this could also be an "honest" comment from a real person. I HOPE it's a troll."

Because when you have friends and family with absolutely no power or water (for several days and weeks), and a ton of damages to their home or other necessities, it really sucks.

Work aside, here's to hoping they just do what's best for their employees in the long run.

Bunch of pussies, i do physical work in a warehouse without any air conditioner for 8 hours a day without crying like a little bitch and we are having 40 to 47° celsius here in sicily, the hottest summer of the last 10+ years.

My condo is literally full choke of dying swift everywhere because of the hot, it looks like some egyptian plague where dead animals falls from the sky...

Tech companies are currently set up to work from home in the Seattle area.. people have brought home monitors, machines, even servers.. chairs, even desks in some cases.

Offices up until literally today (Governor changed the rules) were expected to have 25% capacity, nobody sitting within 6 feet, and other restrictions that require you to re-arrange your office.. and even after restrictions are lifted, most companies are doing those things either way for a while. (because they literally have to pay people to undo these office changes, and don't know if restrictions will come back)

So reacting to a once in a millennium heat wave, that we only knew was coming last week, in a city where we are used to being told BS weather reports that don't pan out.. by sending everyone back to the office, is a little more complicated than you think it is.

Also as pointed out the tweet saying they'd shut down was sent at 4:50 PM, and they are likely working fine today since it's cooler here, more normal high summer temps (normal as in it's not that rare for us to hit 90 degrees.)

I live in Texas. It is regularly 90-100+ degrees. These people are actual pussies unless they have no AC.

That said, we run our work laptops outside in 100+ degrees all the time...haven't had a single lock up. Snowflakes be melting lol.

People are laughing about this, but people are dying because of this heat wave. This shit is not funny.
This is why every state needs adequate heating and cooling. The opposite happened this year in Texas with the big freeze. No more "we don't need to weatherize for summer/winter". Every house in every state needs AC, and every state needs adequate winterization of their electrical grid. Climate change is putting all of us in the shit.

'a little heat'?

So, the hottest temps that that state has ever recorded is just a little heat?

Disregarding that, everyone has their limits. I don't care what you've been through, because it ain't about you. I think it's great that management is allowing their developers time off; this isn't 1920s where employers force employees to work in shit conditions and go beyond their bodily limits just to appease entitled customers like you. It's called empathy, son. You should have it.
