Bungie Devs - 'It's TOO Hot. I cant work!'

SlimySnake SlimySnake I used to live in Seattle and now live in Phoenix so I hope you can understand when I speak about high temperatures and the city in question that it is from personal experience.

STFU you have no idea what you are talking about.

Yes the office buildings have AC, but the rest of the city isn't really set up to handle that kind of temp. Interstate 5 literally buckled from the concrete expanding too much from the heat. Do you expect people to magically fly to the office?

116 F isn't uncommon for Phoenix, but we don't have the humidity Seattle does and everyone has AC or evaporative cooling. Seattle was 30 degrees above the average, Portland was 50 degrees over their average. These weather events are unprecedented and if you want to try and tell yourself that people just aren't tough enough, well... I guess we'll see when it's 50 degrees hotter than usual where you live.

I used to be this way, but in an effort to be more environmentally friendly I've learned to turn the thermostat up, actually haven't used it in the last 5 or so days since we're now having the spring that didn't happen for the second year in a row.

I think it's quite easy to teach yourself to sleep up to at least the lower 70s.

I turn it up to like 85 when I’m not home. I will never give up my 64 while I’m home lol

WTF I live in Alabama and I’ve always dreamed of moving to the PNW to escape the heat.

Can we just start nuclear winter already???

I just left there a few years ago for North Alabama. I think you would feel right at home in North Idaho! That is, of course, if you're a Tide fan... also, it stops being fun once you have to shovel the driveway just about every day and some times twice in one day. Just sayin', I left that up there so I could be comfortable fishing all through the winter. :)

Global warming is the new COVID for excuses why people can't do their job.
Yup.

Lots of us are WFH since last year when covid hit the fan. It seemed just about every person I know with an office job got told to WFH starting March or April 2020.

Unless the company has steel bars across the front doors, you can still get the job done by going to the office. Some people at my company worked at the office the whole time as their job requires lots of space or copier. And the IT guys have there thee whole time doing their server shit.

So just go back to the office for a few days. Next week, I'm heading to the office myself to do some stuff.

Now for anyone who isnt close to an office, figure out a way to do your job.

If the heatwave lasts 2 weeks, nobody is going to do work for 2 weeks?

Yeap some places are really hot that is why we have AC.
At least in my city here in Brazil you see AC in 9 of 10 houses... it is very rare nowdays to see a home without at least one.

And yes we reach here pretty easy over 40C in summer but now is Winter... right now 12C... so cold.
In the mid night it reached 4C.

BTW high temperatures are really bad... AC is a heaven made electronic... even more to sleep.
Dude, I'm freezing here in Rio. 22º Celsius is no joke. I don't know if I'll survive.

Really, 2021 and people dont have ACs? I live in Vietnam where its 40C every day of the year yet my apartment is like north pole. If for WHATEVER reason your house doesnt have central AC...ever thought of buying a portable unit, a walled unit?
Flats in the UK are typically insulated very well and don't have AC built in. Also typically don't have the ability to get a wall unit cause you can't mess with the outside of the building. People aren't going to buy a portable unit for 3 days every 2 years.

The Seattle area only has 1 in every 3 homes with Air Conditioning. They have never needed AC really because of the climate. This 116 degree weather is not normal, so obviously they weren't prepared.

It's the same shit but inversed for what happened here in Texas in February with the freeze. The infrastructure wasn't designed to accommodate it.

Shitty jokes and saying people can just work on Destiny 2 in a coffee shop are idiotic.

Love people calling developers lazy when their state is literally experiencing the hottest recorded temperatures ever. What is this 'pull yourself by the bootstraps' boomer mindset bullshit? If it's too hot, it's too hot. No wonder developers don't post here anymore. 🤦‍♂️
I have worked during record breaking temperatures before and unlike these guys, I had to take buses, subways and walk 15 minutes just to get to and from work. I remember not wearing my Bestbuy jersey to work because I would be drenched by the time I got to work. So I would change into my uniform after I got there.

But this is about Bungie's management. Not devs in general. If their infrastructure cant handle a little heat then wtf. If devs cant work from home because they dont have AC then get them in the office. It's about management instead of coddling devs who are literally sitting at home working on laptops.

Is Schreier blaming gamers for global warming now?
Damn, I missed that one in my treatise:

Too bad all those millennial birds were so soft from their avocado espresso enemas, amirite guys? They need to figure out a way to not be dead.

Wow, the amount of ignorance in this thread.... I'm about to nope out of this community.

i also learned that this week from these kinds of stories

as a Floridian, central AC is a must. but i guess in other parts of the country they still dont all have that. they rely on window units or nothing to get through the summer, i guess bc there summers are so short. my question is, why dont these people all have window units? i mean, its not quite as hot for as long (compared to FL) but it still gets hot af, and my ass would still have a window unit in that bitch for those ridiculously hot summer days (and nights).

seems really retarded and short sighted to not fork over the money for one of those units. and then to complain about it? i dont get it. get a window unit ya jack ass :messenger_tears_of_joy:
The average summer high historically was 72 F in Seattle.

Yeap some places are really hot that is why we have AC.

The average summer high historically was 72 F (22 C) in Seattle. That's the high temp.... This weather is so unheard of.

They are talking about laptops though.
I'm thinking some mass produced laptops just to get everyone working at home fairly cheaply, and we all know laptops can get really hot even without a heatwave.
If they all had desktops with proper cooling, this would never happen.

That's agony. Hottest I've ever been to was 42°C about 6 years ago, in Germany. I skipped some lectures to go to the pool instead.
Heat in a humid climate is exponentially more miserable. 100 F in a place like Houston, for example, is far worse than 120 F in Phoenix.

In either case you sit inside and play videogames where possible, but dry heat is livable; humid heat is death.

It was hotter here where I am in the UK yesterday and I worked a full 8 hour day at home just fine

Remember also, AC is rare in the UK

It was 39C in the area yesterday... it was hotter than that in the UK? lol

AC is rare in the Seattle are too.. not sure you know WTF you are talking about lol

You had over 48 C in the UK?! I kind of doubt it, but if true, wow.

(I'm in Sweden which has mostly the same climate as the UK, and we're at regular summer temperatures of 20-25 C. It has NEVER been over 38 C here in recorded history.)

That explain why there is no AC at homes in Seattle.

Well below 20C is already winter time here :D
The average is a bit over 30C for most of the year with high temperatures reaching over 40C in some periods.
AC is like one of the hot item in shops at summer here in Brasil.

Of all the things you could (rightly) accuse 343 of, you kinda choose the dumbest one.

Netbooks are overheating.
Slow news day, isn't it.

This thread is so bizarre:

- 1 dev says their laptop froze at 11:20.. so obviously can't work
- J Schrier does his usual dramatic thing claiming he has lots of devs saying nobody can get work done! breaking news!
- Another says, at 4:30PM close to when the end of the work day is anyways that Bungie is "shutting down"

People lost power here too.. internet went out, etc...

So at 4:30 maybe Bungie posted on their Slack or whatever for people to just be done for the day.

You guys dont need to dramatically tell tales of how lazy Bungie is lol

Also as I mentioned in my comment, if you live in a place where its typically cold, your buildings are typically insulated very very well.

your funny...it has never been that hot anywhere in the UK.

record high for england is 101F.. it hit over 110 in much of the northwest. temps average in the low 70s..to be that much warmer than normal is shocking...there is such a thing as average.

this is not the desert southwest where its regularly very hot...its a place with a typically cool wet climate. the people and infrastructure are not used to it, just like when it got really cold in texas and it was a big deal despite it being much colder in other places typically.

Yeah, average, but what about those days where it reaches up into the 90s?

so, still I say: Get a window unit ya idiots

Why don't they have ac. Like I think the last building that i've been in that hasn't had ac was back in the early 90s( and that was in Okinawa).

It's not particularly cold or hot in Seattle.

People aren't really prepared for either extreme here.

Although it is becoming more common for central AC to be installed, most of the area live in older homes/buildings.

Yeah they can just go and rub their crystal ball and get AC in preparation for something like this.

Also, now that the entire PNW is scrambling to get AC in a supply chain shortage for appliances across the globe they can just "get a window unit" ASAP 🤡 very good insight. why didn't they think of that

because the highs in Seattle are usually in the 70s.

Back to the office lazy fucks. Laptops and PCs work fine there.

Anyone calling a Winter that has a temp above 0 Celcius COLD, need to be slapped.
Few cities.... I mean you list them with the fingers in one hand... had temps below 0 Celcius here at Winter... and yes Winter is around 10-15C that is indeed very cold for us and everybody uses cold warm clothing and sleep with several blankets.

I remember a trip to Curitiba almost 10 years ago when it had the coldest night of the decade that reached -5C... I could not even type my cellphone (I dropped my cellphone several times) on the airport to ask my friend come get me... it was crazy to the point that I believed I won't support so much cold... it was the coldest I ever faced in my life.
In Sao Paulo people dies on the streets when the temps get around 5C.

The opposite is the norm here... over 30C is the norm.... it is easy to have over 40C at Summer days and some places reaches 50C or so... it is indeed hot but it way easy to walk in the streets than 5C.
