GTA V sold over 145 million, if Mario Kart was released on all platforms over the same time frame, do you think it could come close?

Could Mario Kart match GTA if it was released on all platforms?

The reason GTA V has so many copies sold is because they were bought for MTX. If you counted FIFA packs the same way I'm sure that'd have sold even more. In the end it's kind of a bullshit figure.

More people would be open to trying an open world game like Zelda. Mario kart and platformers are sort of niche. I just think Zelda would appeal to a broader audience.
Niche??? Mario Kart sold more than God of War and The Last of Us 2 put together. It sells A LOT more than Zelda has ever done.

no, in the end its just a racing game, it doesnt appeal to everyone. GTA isnt popular because of the race missions

Aww poor guy doesn’t want to buy another console (while he waits in queue for a 3090 for his gaming rig).

Out of all the 7 gaming gens Nintendo was in, they had one bad showing. And currently, they’re outselling their competitors. Why would they give up one of their biggest selling points to water down their games and sell them somewhere else?

GTA V maybe king with Tetris and Minecraft in the same ballpark, but nothing else comes even close. Not even other multi platform games. Honestly, the comparison is kind of dumb. You could easily ask “Can Assassin’s Creed ever catch it” and get the same answer.
I don't follow your logic, like a lot of people in this thread, most of you guys are completely out of the loop when it comes to sale figures.

Mario Kart 8 ain't just a popular game, it's towards the top end of the best-selling exclusives in the history of video games. The biggest franchise that Ubisoft has is Far Cry, even if you put together all sales of Far Cry 5 on every platform possible, Mario Kart 8 still annihilates it by a huge margin.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold on the Switch 2-3 times more than all the copies sold of Assassins Creed Odyssey across all platforms.

Yes and it might sell another 10 million on Xbox and on PS4 and PC. That would be super fucking impressive if it did those numbers.

All that to reach HALF of what GTA V did.

GTA V was one of the first GaaS that delivered on what it promised. It isn’t just one game but more like 2 dozen games in one world. Mario Kart is a kart racer and that’s it. The appeal would end much sooner. It’s apples and oranges.

Bottom line: You want to play Mario Kart? Buy a Switch.

No, because people wouldn’t rebuy it cross gen.

That said, it would still sell a metric fuck tonne.

I think you underestimate how many people got a PS4 that are very young, or parents who have kids, who would have bought Mario Kart to play with their kids. It would have gone past 10 million so fast it wouldn't even have been funny. If that game was on the PS4 the entire cycle, man, it would have been mad, just imagine login into the PS Store and Mario was plastered across the store. It would have catered to that Sims, Guitar Hero, Crash Bandicoot audience ten times over.

Mario Kart 8 sold almost 40 millions on just two platforms, one of which completely flopped.

It would crush those numbers if released on 5.

eh, i bet thats mostly japanese people. i just think most people who dont care about console wars and probably dont game very much would be more interested in an open world game like zelda. they would liken it to GTA or something.

Everyone who wants games like Mario Kart already has a Nintendo console and the game.

So no.
GTA has a much broader target audience.

GTA5 has hit those numbers because GTA Online became a phenomenon for online gaming

I wouldn't bet on any Nintendo game achieving that

Mario Kart 8? It’s kind of tame imo. I recently got MK8 Deluxe for the Switch and it’s not nearly as good as Mario Kart 64. Not as sharp in its controls, the tracks have so many vibrant colors and things going on that it’s impossible to pay full attention to the road all three laps most races. Speed is uncontrollably fast at 200cc

Mario Kart 64 was simple and effective. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has such a long learning curve. Raced for five hours and I’m still getting dusted by the computers most Grand Prix selections. Why am I so terrible at this game lol

I think it's pretty overrated to be fair, I originally owned it on the Wii U and then got it in a bundle with my Switch but it gets boring pretty quickly. The random items are annoying, especially when you are leading and it's constant red shell, blue shell, lightning and squid ink.

mario and GTA5 ? you are comparing an exclusive games for kids demographics vs an global phenomenon. GTA 5 has mass appeal and it has presence on all platforms. mario kart is nothing but an arcade game for other people especially Pc and xbox and hardcore ps fanbase.

It's close to 40 million sold already, so yeah if you toss it on Xbox/Playstation/PC I could see it getting to that number. It hit close to 40 million so far and bringing a few hundred million potential customers to the table could push it up there

I hereby wanna shit on Nintendo for not making any more dlc for Mario Kart. It is just being stupid at this point and leaving money behind.

No. Not even half.

People buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games. Most people who want Nintendo games like Mario Kart will buy the Nintendo console. There are not 130 million+ people on consoles and PCs that would buy this or any other single Nintendo game, but aren't willing to buy a Switch.

In fact, I don't think there are 130 million people who would pay the $60 for ANY game other than GTA V no matter how many platforms it's on.

The funny thing is, if this question was asked about GTA 5 prior to its dominance, everyone would say there's no chance it would sell as much as it has. "It's for specific adults only, no way is it that popular". Just like they said the Switch would fail and all the rest.

Absolutely. Didn't it sell 35 million + on Switch alone? Imagine if that fucker were on the Xbox 360, PS3, XBONE, PS4, PS5, PC, Series X/S. Also GTA5 has been and is dirt cheap. If Mario Kart released on all platforms and had a sale anything like other games tend to, fuck yeah it'd take 145 mill easy.

I've followed gaming news in the last few years and I know GTAV was a huge success but this to me was still shocking.

Is there any estimate on the lifetime revenue of this game?

I missed this thread the first time around. It's really interesting to see how people who are mostly Nintendo Exclusive or Nintendo Fans think that Nintendo games are just universally "wanted" or whatever. This couldn't be further from the truth. If people want Nintendo games they will buy a Nintendo device for it. You are seeing this phenomenon with the Switch due to Animal Crossing and other mobile-itch-scratching type games. You get the mobile crowd buying the device and that pumps up the numbers. Mommies buying a mobile/portable device for their kids that they will also play sometimes because their friend Karen told her about Animal Crossing.

Nintendo Games are really a nostalgic/acquired taste for people as some grew up with them. Others, like myself, really didn't. Only Nintendo games we played were in the Arcades. C64, C128, Amiga, PC, Atari ST, etc.. fulfilled our gaming needs while growing up.

I think a majority of PlayStation, Xbox and PC users just aren't attracted to the Nintendo Visual/Sound Aesthetic so a Mario Kart vs. GTA V thing would never be too comparable. Sure, it may bump the numbers up some but the GTA V stuff is not just about everyone wanting to buy a copy of it. As people have said earlier the Microtransactions part of it skews the numbers as well.
