PS3,PSP and Vita store death. What to buy to have on the download list. (RACE TO THE DEATH)

This thread is now basically just about what PSP games to buy from PSN before the store goes down lol

PS3 and Vita games to buy are still welcome though as people had a long ass time to get those PS3 titles if they really, REALLY wanted them and should act to avoid this whole thing when or if the store goes down in the future. I think Sony should if anything just fucking keep the webstore up or something as its all connected anyway.

I'd been putting it off because accessing the PS Store through PSP was going to be a pain (had to update to 6.61, get new CFW, and figure out that some error was because I had 2FA turned on and logging into the PS Store on PSP is incompatible with it). Started downloading all my old games. Any recs for actual digital-only PSP games or critical updates/DLC for any big games (e.g. IIRC Mega Man Powered Up had Roll DLC)? I'm going to get some PS1 games as well once I've redownloaded everything. I've got a ton of physical PSP games, so I doubt there is much I'm missing that I would want on that front.

It's surprisingly nostalgic booting it up again and going through the menus. The PSP really is one of the best designed systems - comfortable, feature rich (I'd forgotten all the podcasts I had on it), and easy to navigate. The XMB is great, way better than the shitty bubbles on the Vita. Shame we'll never have something like it - electronics just want to be specialized now, like Switch, and are much bigger.

AMEND YOUR POST! Ps2 owners should buy SSX 3, not plain SSX!!!!

Luckily i dumped tons of money on ps vita and ps3 in the past so I've all the downloads i need on those machines. Tales of Symphonia is Japanese only on ps2, and PS3 can only play ps2 disks if it's a very, very early model.

Tales of Symphonia had a PS3 remaster, but it runs at 30fps, but the GameCube version runs at 60fps. I never realized how much of a difference it is. Is the PS2 version like that too?

I'm sorry but there's a lot of terrible advice here.

Do not buy Dragon Age Origins on console. The game is dirt cheap on PC, it has very low requirements, and most importantly, a completely different battle system that is actually really great versus the janky one on console.

A lot of these games listed here are on the PS4 store as a remaster or simply a PS4 port, so there's no urgency to buy them. The Uncharted games have a remaster collection, and PS2 era games like Jak 1-3 + racing are always on sale on both the PS5 and PS4 stores. Devil May Cry series is another one mentioned here that's been remastered for PS4 and it goes on sale regularly. These games also have trophies too, unlike their PS2 versions.

If you need an absolute must buy PS3 game that you'll never be able to buy again since the store is closing, get the MGS legacy collection (1 to 4) since MGS4 is only possible on PS3, and there's no PS4 ports for the other games.

Otherwise, please check the PS4 store before you end up buying an old game that has a more updated version available. And, if you got PC, make sure you check Steam.

That’s originally why I double dipped on the PS3, because I thought resolution and 16:9 trumped FPS, yet I kept going back to the GameCube version instead for some reason.

Unrelated but I've recently got my wii u playing my GameCube archive and it's fucking great, doesn't have the same visual boost as dolphin but all the games work and it's a buttery smooth framerate

is there currently a way to obtain a list of all your vita/ps3 purchases/items?

the only thing I can find is psdle, but as best I can tell it's functionality recently disappeared once sony finished moving to their new store. i guess I could scroll down the download list in the store on my vita and write down e item that I can download. but that would be less than ideal.

Writing it down is the only way I see. PSP-PS3-Vita were meant to have that online store and Media Go, unfortunately.

Shooters and Racing games age the worst out of all genres.

I'm a massive Killzone and Gran Turismo fan (to the point i would rather take a new KZ over Horizon), and even i can admit you aren't missing much by not being able to play those old games (even though, i believe Killzone 2 and 3 are on PS Now). The servers are down for Killzone online, so you can't even experience the best part of the series (Killzone 2 multiplayer). Gran Turismo Sport is easily the best GT in the series now following all of its updates + online, and its always going on sale. You're better off with that, versus going back to GT5 or GT6.

If people really want to stock up on games they should focus on less popular classics that you are sure won't get remastered and / or re-released. Someone here suggested Jeanne D'Arc for PSP and that is a perfect example of something you should pick up.

I own gt sport, even now it lacks a lot of the depth of gt6 career mode. It's great though, i play it more than 6. Anyway i was talking from a collection standpoint, rather than gameplay.. I'm looking forward to gt7.

to be honest lol i didn't play more than the opening mission or two of k2 or 3, i think the last console fps i really liked was time splitters 2 or something.. but i made sure i got discs for them..

(Fc2 was pc for me)

I understand that this makes me sound a little crazy, but I cleared off my PS3 hard drive and redownloaded everything in reverse alphabetical order. This way, once it’s finished, I have everything listed alphabetically from Back to the Future to Zone of the Enders.
Fired up Sly Cooper again! I’m so happy I have that game available still.

I've done this. Here's a tip and you're only going to need to watch this for the smaller sized titles but, separate your each of your installs by a couple minutes. If you haven't already thought this through you'll thank me later :)

Dragon Age is superior on PC, no doubt, but playing with a controller is must for a lot of people, and there's no controller support on PC.

I've got most of the main games I wanted that are going to be gone for good:

Got the Armored Core games, Brandish, LocoRoco Midnight Carnival, Black Rock Shooter, and decided to get Carnage Heart EXA because it sounded interesting. Most of these are importable, but (outside of Brandish) they are not particularly expensive to buy digitally. $20 is a little steep lol, but it's Falcom, so worth it.

IIRC there are PSone Classics that aren't available to buy on PS3, and I definitely know that there are many that Sony did not license to play on the Vita. Anyone have anything to add? I liked this list of ones to get that aren't available digitally elsewhere (Crash, Spyro, etc. not withstanding now):

The last issue would be PSP minis. I ignored these when the PSP was a thing because they seemed like garbage, but doing some research shows that some are actually good. Anyone have suggestions?

Surely you can modify PS3 game order with CFW, right? PSP has some hack that does alphabetical ordering, cause that was one of the first thing I did years ago.

Thanks for the heads up. The only real issue I had were the demos/full game key downloads. The full game key won’t download in the background and will give it a higher priority if there’s a large queue.

Yeah, Ive looked into this. What concerns me is even the remote chance of having my PSN account banned having so many digital games on other platforms. With the WiiU and 3DS, I can just keep them offline, but for some of the CFW, it looks like the PS3 needs to be online. For me, the risk is too great.

I've got a CFW PSP and Vita, and from what I've read basically no one gets banned for simple modding. The companies can tell when you try actual exploits, e.g. there was some PS Store hack on the Vita that let people literally shoplift games. I can still use the PS Store on both, no issues, using it normally.

Of course, Sony seems to care a lot more about their consoles than their handhelds, so IDK.

I've did the same, and guess what? After software update it moved one game from the middle to the back. That's second time when something like this happened. I'll just leave it be for now.

You definitely should not ignore PSP Minis! There are many great little (under 100 MB) games that are inexpensive and fun!

While many people associate Minis with PSP, almost all of the Minis (except for two or three) are also playable on PS3, PS Vita, and PSTV.

I've accumulated around 50 to 60 Minis throughout the years. I purchased about half of that collection, while the others were given out through PS Plus years ago.

If you want to start hunting down the good ones, here are a couple places that I'd suggest:

  • Official PSP Minis Thread right here on NeoGAF.
  • PSPMinis.com...which apparently didn't renew their domain, so the site is no longer "live". Fortunately, you can go to Internet Archive and browse some old archives using this link. It looks like they let the site lapse sometime in December 2020, so use an earlier date.
I don't have time to compile a list at the moment, but I'll try to post a few of my favorites later. If you see a particular game that interests you, toss out a name and I'll let you know if I've played it.

Reading through all the articles on the PSP store shutdown and Sony's own statement, I don't see whether it has been confirmed that PSP games available on Vita and PS3 (almost all of them between the two) are going to be delisted. The news just talks about storefronts, and some articles specifically said that Somy never clarified about the games themselves. I think I'm going to call Sony customer service tomorrow at lunch and see what they say. I don't feel bad if PSP games are not getting delisted because I'd rather get what I want way ahead of when they actually do shut down the store. I've also taken the opportunity this to get reacquainted with my PSP (Brandish is awesome, btw, and I've always wanted to try AC) and get a 1 TB SSD in my PS3 that I had been meaning to install since I got it at Black Friday last year.

I've seen recommendations for:

1000 Tiny Claws
3, 2, 1...SuperCrash!
Age of Zombies
Alien Havoc

Blast Off
Bloons

Urbanix
Vempire
Where is My Heart
Who's That Flying?
Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam
Zenonia

Any experience with these, or anything I missed that you would recommend?

I also got ahold of Sony customer service today at lunch - according to them all that is closing is the PSP storefront itself (i.e. access through the PSP), and the games currently available to buy on the PS3/Vita store will still be up. Maybe I'm late on this, but that is the first confirmation I've had towards that being the case vs PSP games being delisted. Like I said, all the articles I read when Sony reversed on the PS3/Vita stores said that PSP games would not be able to be downloaded. That does seem a little odd in hindsight considering PSone Classices are PSP/PS3, most Minis are PSP/PS3/(Vita sometimes) and most PSP games are PSP/Vita. The rep seemed a little confused by the question, though, so maybe he misunderstood. Guess we'll see 🤷‍♂️

A few days ago, I posted a link to the now defunct PSPMinis.com site through the Internet Archive. As a matter of convenience, here's a link to the game's they've reviewed, but with their reviews sorted by score from best to worst:

You'll also notice that in addition to Minis, they also reviewed some PlayStation Mobile games for a while. Unfortunately, the entire PS Mobile category was delisted a few years ago.

I infinitys_7th , I've probably played only about a quarter of the games that you've listed. Of those, here are a few of my highest recommendations:

Although you didn't mention these, I'd also add the following:

Tetris and Monopoly were well made renditions from Electronic Arts, but have been delisted.

Pac-Man Championship Edition is only playable on PSP (not on PS3, Vita, or PSTV), and has also been delisted. The game is available on PS3 as part of Pac-Man Museum, along with several other games in the Pac-Man series.

I haven't played the Minis version of Edge, but I've got the game on several other platforms (PC, Android, 3DS). It is a great game for sure, but if you've got a 3DS, that version of the game frequently goes on sale for about 49 cents, so maybe consider getting it there instead.

I already had looked at the archive you recommended - it had a ton of helpful detail on games. Most of the stuff that sounded interesting was in the 8+ scores. Saw a couple things lower (Dead End Valentine caught my eye because I like weird VNs), but the lower games usually were described as repetitive, which is a red flag for me. I'll see what is available and how the prices look now, and look at your recs. Thank you for your help!
