Xbox keeps returning to the same franchises - Halo, Forza (which I might try for the first time, but must be getting stale for Xbox owners) and the very niche Flight Sim which most console gamers don't care about and has been on PC for months.

Sony seems to be providing more depth and variety, and upgrades like FF7 Remake Intergrade are a very welcome addition.
Making this point while Sony's biggest releases this year are sequels...

That's obviously subjective, but what's not subjective is that Nintendo will likely sell the most exclusives this year, by far.
This means absolutely nothing when it comes to quality of titles, or titles that interest a specific person. Not sure why you are mentioning it.

Honestly, I wouldn't count timed exclusives which actually hurts xbox's lineup more than Sony's lineup this year. With that being said, it is very subjective. I love FPS and Arcade racing games a lot. Ratchet is always a fun game imo, but games like Horizon Zero dawn and Witcher 3 bore me tbh.Flight simulator looks very interesting to me just because I can fly over different areas in real life. Overall, I think Xbox is better lineup, but this is subjective as someone can hate arcade racers and FPS games.

I’ve never seen a drought like this for Nintendo, it’s like a weird trick because all of a sudden we’re going to get Breath of the Wild 2.

MS is returning to the same franchises and a Pc title that has been out for months.

But this timed moneyhat third party title that is a next gen update to a game that has been out for more than 12 months, now that’s something special 🤡

Also the upcoming Sony PS5 big hitters:

Another GT
Another God of War
Another Horizon Far Cry

And they just released another Ratchet.

They do get kudos however for being the only one of the two to actually release a next gen only game so far.

It's a bit daft to be putting Horizon in the same class as the rest when there's only been one game

I also give them kudos for Returnal. It was a risky project and I hope that despite the milquetoast sales, they keep investing in such games.

According to the internet - cross-gen(or upported) console exclusives don't count - so that cuts the lists down to 5 for PS5, and 4 for XBox respectively.
Also according to the internet - smaller/indie studios don't count either, so that leaves like 3 for PS5, and 0 for XBox.

It's a very barren launch year ain't it...

Halo, Forza Horizon, and Flight Sim are all bigger titles than anything releasing on PS5 this year. The last Horizon game as of Nov 2020 had been played by 24 million people. Flight Sim and Halo will still be played by millions several years after their release.
Ah, yes, the ole' sales = quality argument. That's why Gamefreak are the best developers ever, right? 🤦‍♂️

Not voted. I think it’s genuinely close. PS probably edges it if Horizon is timely.

For me if PlayStation do release Ratchet and Horizon this year, that’s a tremendously strong showing.

I know that I will get a lot of play time from Halo, and a fair amount of time on Forza Horizon.

PlayStation has Returnal, which looks great, and will also see the PS4 version of Psychonauts 2. Flight Sim may keep me busy for a bit but not like the other games.

If Horizon is pushed back, Xbox has had the stronger year.

GOTYs, yep. Lemme guess, you're one of those tin-hatted conspiracists that believe everything is rigged?
GOTY usually goes to single player story driven games 90% of the time. Which is what Sony focuses on while games like MS flight simulator or Forza Horizon can get 90+ metacritics and won't even get nominated. Which is okay because journalists do like story driven games more than multiplayer / GAAS games. In fact, only game that comes to mind that was multiplayer based and won GOTY was overwatch. Mainly because it was a slow year for single player games.

List wars V5.1 the thread.

Even though Halo for me is worth more than every other game on those lists, the xbox side of things is nothing but wet dreams at the moment. Sony at least had some things ready for their launch window.

not to get into the console wars non-sense but that list is missing Mechwarrior 5 for Xbox and Oddworld Soulstrom I believe is also coming to the Xbox so its not a Playstation exclusive.

I feel sorry for you if that’s your only metric.

There wasn’t any reason why Ori and the Will of the Wisps was snubbed from every Game of the Year short list last year.

As pointed out above, a game like Forza Horizon will never win Game of the Year, despite being one of the best games on the market.

What's GOTY material about Flight Simulator or Forza Horizon? You literally just fly or drive all day, which these franchises have been doing for literally all of its iterations. Sure, they do it impeccably, but the game doesn't have anything much to say beyond that. They serve their purpose. Singelplayer games scoop up all the GOTYs because their stories are rich with emotional and artistic depth, all while being complemented by great gameplay. GOTYs are the games you want to present to naysayers when they claim that video games aren't an art form.

Nintendo Switch did for me, easily. Just looking at the amount of exclusive games I purchased dwarves the other 2 consoles.

PS5 for me this year was basically just Demon's Souls. It was amazing but it was just 1 game. I'm passing on Ratchet and Returnal for now.
Xbox coming in with a strong 3rd place for me. I'm going to try all the stuff this year. I'm not a previous Halo, FS, Psychonauts fan but I'll be playing them all to see what I think. I've never played Forza either so looking forward to that.

Last three months of the year are really nice for Xbox with Back4Blood (multi but day one on gamepass), Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite.
Waiting for the Sony event to see what they have in store

For Ori, basically it released too early in the year and the xbox version at launch had some performance issues sadly. I think if reviewers played it again or for the first time 6 months later, it would have been up there.

Good point.

They did review it again on Switch though, in September, and it went from 90 to 93 MC!

Xbox line up has some promising indies but thats the case from 2010. They always get indies for the machine. I hope they turn around things quickly and release AA game every quarter on xbox.

I'd say its exactly equal and so one wins, the wars are over, write your coming home letters boys/boyettes because its time to head back to the motherland and party/be shunned by the non-gaming population for dishonest and confused reasons:

Seriously though, there is no possible way to compare exclusives because not everyone likes the same thing, maybe we could compare their metacritic scores when they all come out or something but thats sounds like a dreadful waste of ones time. Like arguing with a badger.

Not every game is gonna get onto the GOTY contender's list. Not sure why you're acting like it's some malicious affront.

There's nothing about Forza Horizon that's GOTY material. It's just a racing game that doesn't do anything particularly innovative. Sure, the developers have essentially perfected its formula, but there's not much about the game that keeps critics talkative about it. It does what it has to do. GOTY games are games that truly showcase the potential of video games as an art form, like Breath of the Wild, or Red Dead Redemption 2.

Lazyass journalism. That isn't even an exhaustive list of not so "exclusives" for both consoles. Seems like they just did the bare minimum for PS5 even though there are a lot more exclusive games than those. Lol

Who or what decides what’s on the GOTY lists? It can’t be Metacritic scores or user reviews, or else Ghost of Tsushima and TLoU 2 would be no where near any of the shortlists. It’s possibly the oddest omission I can remember.

RDR 2 isn’t innovative either, and merely perfects the typical open world formula that Rockstar and other companies have already established.

Who says those are the only types of games that should be considered for GOTY? A game that has tight, refined, satisfying gameplay and is well balanced like Forza or Halo might never be considered for GOTY but I’ll easily put 300 hours plus in to them.

Believe it or not not everyone is playing video games for what is primarily third rate pretentious tripe scripts.

This really needs to be something we look back on and vote. Some of these games are not going to actually land in 2021. Besides that, some of these games are unknown quantities, and could end up being awesome or average. Games like Ghostwire Tokyo, Deathloop, Kena, Oddworld, CrossfireX, Scorn, The Ascent, and The Gunk all look like they might be good/great to me but we'll know a lot more when they launch.

If we just look at known/expected experiences I would probably say I am personally more excited for Microsoft games. For me Halo is one of my favorite single player/coop/multiplayer game series of all time. I already know that will be where most of my gaming time goes when it releases. I also have put a lot of hours into both FH3 and FH4, so I expect more of the same with FH5. On the Sony side I expect to really enjoy both Ratchet and Horizon, as I have liked/loved those game series previously
