Serious question for Nintendo fans: What's the thing that makes you to be excited about Nintendo nowadays?

Nintendo games are pure magic to me... I screamed like a child while my gf laughed while seeing Metroid 5 reveal... I just closed youtube and kept on my things while seeing Ubi "Guerrilla is good, I swear" simulator and some other AAA games revealed.

Nintendo games are just... good. They are GAMES, the same vibe I get from Doom 2016, just pure and honest fun. And it's not that their games look bad lol, I've been feeling overwhelmed by graphics detail with zzzzzzzzz art style, Nintendo for some reason keeps being a breath of fresh air graphically that "just looks right".

They can't. They don't trust their own IP to retain as much value Nintendo ones do and I don't think they would anyway apart from a couple... which is an an advancement.
I was talking more about having a shitty tablet (with the most shitty controllers ever created) instead of a proper powerful home console, their ridicolous internet service, their half assed (and i'm being gentle) remasters at full price, their output composed by 90% of childish looking games with low production values even for their strongest brands (even if they are generally good games) etc.

Thank god the other 2 choosen a different path.

As a guy who buy and re-sell physical copies, their price policy is probably the only good thing about them.

You don't understand how special the Switch is if you think its a failure just because its not technically on par with current home consoles.

Nintendo Switch is proper AAA console gaming in your hands, freedom to take anywhere, and play on your TV if you choose. Not even the Vita came close to accomplish this, Nintendo won the hearts of millions of gamers when they showed not only Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey played on the small screen, but Skyrim as well. One of the most popular games of the seventh generation, even improved compared to those old systems.(and later others of course, from DOOM to Witcher, Resident Evil and Final Fantasy)

Switch is the only ecosystem willing to pay $60 for portable games, despite its flaws it will continue to be the place for AAA games on portable, and new iterations should offer improved quality and even better experiences

LOL "shitty tablet", sure now it is, but when it came out you couldn't get something more powerful at the same price, Switch was top notch mobile when it came out... Don't come with iPads, iPhones and some random Android Phone, those are way above Switch price and price is important for a product like this.

But what you know about price and products when you talk about "releasing a powerful home console", when it clearly wouldn't mean the enormous success the Switch is having... I'd like that too, but things are as they are, I prefer Nintendo to keep around as they want as long as hey deliver their "childish" looking game... which, BTW, is mostly due to market research you're probably no awared about.

Nintendo can't make a product for the vast minority of gamers and loose just to make some people not talk shit lmao...

Having said this, I'm mostly sure that the reason a lot of us love Nintendo games is because of reasons many hates them: Gameplay focus instead of technical complexities, graphic styles (I LOVE it), original stuff that seem dumb or gimicky at first and yet stay with us as standard (gyro aiming) and most importantly, FULL GAMES from the beginning. I'd rather have their price mode than SFV fiasco on smash lol.

Again... never said you aren't allowed to. If you do that's great. lol

I just think overall the quality of games coming from Nintendo are low. They're $20-30 games and not worth the full retail price.
Facts say they are not so what’s your argument here?

I'm sorry but how all of that change the fact that switch is a shitty tablet even compared to the weakest traditional home console (xone)?! do you think that i was comparing switch to a calculator or a samsung tablet? no i was comparing switch to the other home consoles.

the fact that it was top tier (with a 720p resolution i have my doubts tbh) doesn't change the fact that it is still a shitty hardware in the big scheme of things.

about the rest, i'm not saying that they wrong on following their believes when it comes to gaming, i'm just glad that the other 2 don't copy Nintendo and we have different approaches from the big 3.

It won't run the games the same, but we don't care... the people the Switch is aiming at don't care and that's well beyond "nintendo fans", games look amazing visually, see Mario Kart 8, Luigi's Mansion 3, Arms, etc.

Most people that like Nintendo like art style more than resolution or effects sampling, for third parties I have PC, others buy them because they honestly don't care and then everyone is happy... Except those with... weird expectations... I mean, I shit all day on MS for not adding F gyroscope to their controllers, it doesn't make Xbox a bad platform or their controllers shit, just different

This thread is exists one reason and one reason only is GRAPHICS, entire reason some of you guys don't care about Nintendo games is GRAPHICS, but at one point you guys need accept the fact that not all people are GRAPHIC whore like yourself and can enjoy games on Switch even its not high tech.

Again I don't see that changing since people in NeoGAF love to have childish arguments over few pixels and frames.

You can make even better cartoony style with better hardware (also better resolution, framerate, stuff on screen etc.), ratchet on ps5 is a living proof of that, everybody would be in favour of next mario looking like ratchet...

Nintendo's hardware is always just powerful enough to run the games that Nintendo want to develop, they don't give, or shouldn't give a shit what the rest are doing when with the IP and development talent that they have.

Still the best in the biz, unless your playing games for all the "shiny, shiny"rather than engaging play mechanics and novel ideas.

nostalgia, refined gameplay and art direction.

that said I probably dislike more than I like about nintendo.

also, the fact that there is still faceting in nintendo games is mindblowing. like how do they still not smooth their round edges on simple things like miis and yoshi etc.

Sure... but as they are now (or, say, when Switch came out), they are enough for most of Switch audience... They can improve their lighting model, resolution, etc., later, but for a lot of us they already look good enough. I'm amazed to this days how MK8 looks, as long as Metroid Dread art style quality is a rare example I'm happy with their output, and I guess a lot of people are too, considering Switch success.

I'd appretiate a little more resolution tho for when I get a 4K TV but that's why Nintendo is probably releasing a Pro model, not believing rumors but what Iwata told investors when revealing NX project and future Nintendo approach.

You know that you can just act as if Nintendo don't exist? There's tonnes out there that does cater to you.

Anyway, Nintendo make games and consoles that are just fun. I think people forget that they always have been a toy/makers of fun things company ever since their inception making hanafuda.

I wouldn’t call myself a “Nintendo fan” since The Switch is the first Nintendo console I’ve bought in awhile and I don’t play it too much. I think Metroid, Pokémon and SMTV is a pretty good line up for the end of the year.

Graphics are shitty on the Switch but that has never bothered me since the games I’ve played on it have been fun. I wouldn’t complain if they put out a “Pro” model, but it’s not a huge deal. There are good experiences to be had on the Switch like any other console.

Portable Skyrim and Bioshock and almost instantaneous suspend and resume taken together was wholly absent from Sony and Microsoft. Still is. Plus as well as being twice the price no mainstream tablet has especially designed game controllers. But you knew all of that already didn't you?

A huge portion of the library plays and looks exactly like the other two consoles.
Dreamworld Dig 2 was one of my favs on switch.

there are a lot of games like that.

It's almost like Nintendo's goal for their hardware is completely different from that of Microsoft and Sony.
But i understand that, that's why i said that i'm happy that the other 2 are not following nintendo's type of business, not my fault if people get offended because i insult their favourite piece of plastic, the switch is de facto a far weaker hardware than the other 2 console and i don't care for their tablet hybrid gimmick that result from that choice.
I mean, it's not like i don't criticize the other 2 when they make questionable decisions, look at the fucking avatar ffs :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Aye 85 million consoles sold, hundreds of millions of software titles sold with several games selling 20 million plus ...questionable decisions indeed.

You need to either crawl back under your bridge or stop staying up past your bedtime 🌙 or both. Either way you're embarrassing yourself.

What a cute response, dude, we are in a fucking forum, we all have different taste, i'm not speaking for the entire world, i'm speaking for me, i'm pretty sure that you have controversial opinions about sony, and they sell more ps4 than switch and i'm not here telling you to go to bed because i don't give a damn about any of them.

And cut this big boy attitude crap, the only embarassing one in here is the man-child who can't take a different opinion about his favourite plastic toy in a damn forum, grow up dude.

Here you go 《puts toy back in pram》. Hope that's all better now 😉

I am really bitter in my 40s when it comes to gaming. Few games can hold my attention for along time, fewer still are the single player games that hold my attention for a long time. There are only 2 games I can tolerate these days. One is SMT the other is BOTW.

I also play Path of Exile and Ark with my friends. But I need my friends there or my attention doesnt hold.

Yesterday I was playing BOTW once again and I was still in awe on how good the game looks. The breeze pushing the leaves away, the moon illuminating all the plateau... felt magic. It's just gorgeous.

I used to hate Nintendo before this gen and I was heavily into AAA gaming. All the COD, Halo and Tlou were my fucking jam. Since I moved to this country I don't have much time to sit in front of the TV and enjoy long hours of gaming. Being able to grab my Switch and play half an hour in bed before sleeping is a god send. That and I'm starting to enjoy their games more and more. I'm not hardcore anymore and ultra realistic graphics are not something that excites me anymore, so the Switch is my only console right now. I still occasionally miss the triple AAA action but after a while I just don't care.

I don't buy many games but the ones that Nintendo is going to put out in the next months excite me (SMTV, Fatal Frame, fucking Metroid). So i'm good and love them for it.

Unfortunately in NeoGAF graphics has more value over than everything else, most popular discussion here is either about graphics or controversy, not really about the actual games.

So, speaking seriously and not to mock anyone nor any platform. I've been gaming since the '90s, I've been there when Nintendo was THE gaming manufacturer that could only be rivaled by SEGA. When Sony arrived at gaming with the PSX and the 3D was a whole new world.
The early 00s when Microsoft arrived to the console and gaming market with its Xbox. Etc etc etc.

I've known Nintendo for its great and polished games, and their awesome and always innovative hardware.

Fast forward to 2021, present day. And it's today that I've watched the Nintendo E3 Direct, in the hopes that something brought me back to adopt a Switch or future Switch Pro. To see something that makes me go back to the awesome N64 days, the powerful GameCube days, or even the innovative and fun Wii times.

But geee. Now I'm here trying to understand why Nintendo is one of the most successful companies in gaming today and why it has such diehard fans. I just cannot understand what's the thing that this company has that can make so many people excited.

All I saw was zero innovation, zero new IPs, zero graphics nor new ways to awe me. Only rehashed IPs, re-re-re-releases, HD's ports, third party games running at 15fps with graphics straight from the 7th gen.

All I could take home was a little Metroid game that seemed cool.. But nothing more than what indie companies and its games have been giving me for 10 years already.

It's the pure nostalgia of playing old games? It's the 1 or 2 in a generation game such a Mario Oddyssey or Breath of the Wild? It's that you just like the same IP's over and over and over and over and over and over...? It's just that you are so die-hard fans from the old days that no matter what Nintendo puts in your face you'll consume it anyway?

I'd really like to know why Nintendo seems like a company totally stuck in time to me, while so much people cheers over it like it's the second coming of Jesus for whatever they spit out.

You start by saying you aren't mocking anyone or any platform, and then you kind of go on a bit of a run with the possible reasons you think people like Nintendo. FWIW, I can do that to Playstation, too. I find the games industry to be in a bit of a sad state with much less in the way of competition within genres and games taking almost an entire console lifespan to be created. It's not great.

I can answer a few of your questions though. You said you'd like to know why Nitnendo seems like a company totally stuck in time. I think that could quite possibly be because we're still gaming on like 4 GameCube's duct-taped together or something. The Switch is only a little more powerful than a Wii U. That's how far back they are in terms of graphics performance. The Wii U was a little better than PS3/360.

What sold me a Switch was Breath of the Wild and the fact that most people I know, when we hang out and stuff everyone always wants to play Nintendo (Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash Bros., etc). It's kind of an easy choice.

Where I kind of start to draw the line with them is when the hardware they make can barely play the software they're publishing. That really irks me. I pay $300 for their game box unit and another $60 for the best RPG adventure exploration game (referring to Xenoblade Chronicles 2) and the game chugs at times. It's 2021, don't give me a blurry slideshow. Frankly, BotW did the same damn thing. That was a launch title, and their hardware could barely run a Wii U game.

I can be a bit forgiving in that Iwata designed this platform and he devoted a significant chunk of the hardware costs to those Joycon controllers with the HD rumble. It was a nice enough gimmick but for my $35 or whatever I would have skipped the fancy rumble for the standard rumble and found a way to pump higher clockrates and added 2 more GB of memory.

They will hopefully realize the shortcomings of the hardware they're releasing because many of their own ideas are becoming limited by it.

You act as if you are surprised by all this, Nintendo have not gone for competing power since the Gamecube, and in all possibility will not again, it's amazing how well the Switch has sold considering it's not running any of it's games to an acceptable performance standard, or just not that many people care.

Maybe they make pretty damn consistently awesome games.

And I always look forward to their games on new hardware. Seeing what Nintendo artists can produce on lower spec hardware is amazing. Can't even imagine what they could do with better tech. They'll get there eventually, I am more than happy with the visuals of games today. I can be happy with what we have, while still wanting more. I however will never piss and moan like some people do over their games/tech.

When you offer a solution to a problem many people didn't know they had, you will sell a hundred million of it.

I think that with Wii, Nintendo intentionally sacrificed graphics because they knew that Wii might not catch on. They chose a price point that they felt comfortable would sell. Switch was in a slightly better position due to its portability, but they still would not push the price. Plus, the form factor and battery limitations also impede what kind of graphics performance they can achieve with only passive cooling.

The reason why Nintendo doesn't sell more powerful systems is because they feel that the price tag is very important specifically for them. They're probably not wrong, but if you think about it another way what they're saying is "Sony can sell a box for $500. We can only sell a box for $300." Nintendo doesn't believe they can sell a $500 game console. What do you think of that?

We may find out if Nintendo can get away with selling a box for $400 if they ship a Switch Pro. At a $400 price point, they would beef up the device a bit more while still pocketing a hefty sum off of each unit sold.

Nintendo got out of the power race when Microsoft came along, the core market is around 180 million consoles each generation, and for Nintendo to compete in that it would be far to expensive for any potential return, so they simply forged their own way.

Do you lose sleep when someone in a forum has a different opinion? because if this is the case, you need to straight up your priorities dude.

I don't like the trade up in power because i personally don't love handled consoles very much, i don't have many occasion to use them and i have gigantic hands so they are not very comfy, i was a nintendo fanboy before the wii and the gimmicky way, tell me how this is an unreasonable opinion to have in a forum?!

I bought a switch to use it exclusively as a home console and it's not very great compared to the other 2.

if this opinion disturb you so much, sue me.
