PS5 Off to a Stronger Start Than PS4 Says Jim Ryan, “Throwing Money” Won’t Lead to Success

I think you are over valuing zenimax i have no doubt he would have liked for them to remain independent, but it was a good move for Microsoft they needed it the absolute most out of the 3 platform holders.
And while u have people on playstation who previously bought or look forward to there games i dont know many people who when purchasing a playstation system go "oh im buying a playstation for bethesda games" theres a whole laundry list of why you own a playstation before you get to that, its just a bonus for people.

Throwing money at stuff is a MS thing in general. They go after stuff that have established reputations or success and then buy them out in attempt to corner the market, i shouldnt have to give you a list of examples of this, im not talking timed exclusives either.

the thing is, remember sony first ps5 montage? so many 'exclusive play it first' on ps5.
jimbo doing the exact thing back then. rumblings that he almost secured starfield exclusives, until Phil put a stomp stop on it.
Thats why jimbo is now waving off 'money hatting'. You realised how his direction has changed to organically growing own studios? 🤭

i still think 'money hatting' and throwing money at something are two seperate ordeals i honestly dont even think he meant MS buying up a publisher - Its more along the lines of if you think thats all it takes to be successful in this business its alot more to it than that kind of thing. I mean its not like MS is immune to this practice as there are examples as recent as this week ! It's just there results from money hatting have fashioned them vastly different results. im just glad people are able to have a civil discussion about it. other than your usual suspects that add nothing of thought but surface comments that dont spark real conversation.

Well he's right. It takes decades of the right gaming culture to manage all those studios and talent in order to reach where Sony is right now in terms of quality (regardless if their first party games cater to your tastes or not) and this is also something that Nintendo knows and does very well even if their first party projects are smaller in terms of budgets.

Is God of War Ragnarok 2 considered a small 1st party title 😂

Kena is coming in August. We already know ND has been hard at work on Factions 2. Forspoken and FFXVI could drop next year too
Is there actual footage of it?
you could pretty much start the release clock as soon as they show this and at the minimum it would be 12 months from that time....with Covid who knows how long they have blown out to

All we have seen is a logo

HZD2 we got our first footage just over 12 months ago and we dont have a release date yet

GT7 i would have no idea on when it would be released but we will probably get some sort of Prologue version and then the full game so once again...start the 12 month clock as soon as you see footage and add on 4 years because its PD

So what exactly is Sony’s plan going forward?

PS5 is stomping Xbox Series consoles on sales but they sound a bit like Nintendo here. Complacent dinosaur. Are they going to stay on course or try to do something about the snowball that is rolling down the hill?

It really doesn’t matter if Sony show off the best looking Gran Turismo, God of War and Uncharted in their upcoming event at this point.
We already know we’ll get exclusives like that. It’s expected. And it’s not enough.

To get a proper PR win good enough to stop that snowball at this point they really need to announce an answer to Xbox Game Pass.

I don’t expect diehard fans to see this right now because they’re too busy defending not wanting a Gamepass-like service for whatever reason. But we all know that everybody else would hype the shit out of such a service if Sony would announce it in a couple of weeks, simply because it would be awesome and it’s exactly what the market wants now.

Sony really can’t sit on their laurels pretending nothing is happening in my opinion.

I’m on the never ending hunt for a PS5 like everyone else but as things are right now I’ll use the Xbox Series X and PC as my everyday gaming platforms for the exact same reasons I use Spotify to listen to music. That’s just how things are now. The market and how most of us consume our entertainment has changed.

I’ll definitely use my PS5 for a Michelin star meal once or twice a year but it’s the everyday food buffay on Xbox/PC that’ll keep my belly nice and round.

Build more? Their studios, which they don't have much since Jim closed so many of them already (talking about growth lol), make just one, maybe two games during entire generation. Food for thought indeed.
Under Jim, only studio japan was downsized. Most of the close-downs were under House and Layden. Not that it matters much who did what.

Irrespective of how many studios closed down, games have been coming out at a steady pace.

When they work with third parties, they mostly fund upcoming studios in original projects and leave them independent instead of just buying big third party multiplatform studios.

Don't pretend you can't see the difference.

There is no way God of War..GT7 FF and Horizon coming in same year....

FF is more likely a 2024 title or even late
GT7 .... ?? LoL
HORIZON in holidays 2021
God of War probably 2022

We have not seen anything meaningful about games other than Horizon....

I suspect Insomniac is working on Spiderman sequel with 2 playable/coop Spider-Man
ND is most likely doing Young Sully centric Uncharted... And LastofUs2 multiplayer ...

So less than what MS has for the rest of the year and two of those games are from their studios.

Thanks for proving my point.
lol are you serious?

MS has 6 games for the next months after announcing everything they have.

Sony also has 6 games lined up (and that does not include what they may announce in their summer event). And I only listed full or timed exclusive for Sony.

On the Xbox list, MSFS has been available for months now on PC. Psychonauts 2 is a multiplatform, and so is Back 4 Blood. Both are releasing on PlayStation day one. And Age of Empires isn't even releasing on Xbox.

So, 2 new exclusive games on Xbox in the next 6 months. PS5 has 6 new exclusive games that we know of, and there may be more announced in Sony's summer event. This is in addition to 10 exclusive games Sony has released in the last 7 months. So roughly 15 exclusive games in one year.

Eh. Nurturing talent is one thing, giving it enough resources to make games quickly is another. Their games are finally making a shit load of money and their studios are still 100-300 people max. There is a reason Tshushima took six years to make.

Their studios need 500 man teams and multiple teams per studio to get games out in 3 years. Or we will be looking at another gen where SSM, Sony Bend and PD release jyst one game in a 7 year generation.

If it wasn't for insmoniac who he just bought, Sony first party would've had zero games released so far. Bluepoint and Housemarque are not first party studios they nurtured. Neither were insomniacs who did it all their own and were bought out i.e, money was thrown at them. So Clearly he had to throw money at the problem of his first party taking forever to release games.
Wow you clearly don't know anything about Housemarque and Insomniac.

I love how after each big Microsoft PR event all the fanboys come out of the woodworks with these crazy narratives. Then like half a month later Sony puts everyone in their fucking place.

You have to have your head pretty far in the sand or be some type of amnesiac to buy the Microsoft come back PR at this point. Look, we get it, they had a good show, and are definitely moving in the right direction. And that's exciting because for the last 5 or so years it's been fucking crickets and tumbleweeds for their fans.

But to compare their output to Sony's is laughable at this point. Sony has been delivering a steady stream of award winning games for years with no signs of stopping. When Jimbo talks about what it takes to make great games he has the track record to prove he knows what he's talking about.

Microsoft, with all it's PR promises and big purchases, haven't given us shit yet. And they haven't proven they know how to manage creatives worth a damn. Call me when they actually deliver.

Pretty ironic considering how Sony is throwing money at third parties for timed exclusives left and right.

Do what you want, but don't be a hypocrite about it.

Most of you come here and reply to the title, while he's not fucking talking about that topic you're referring to. He's literally saying throwing money on garbage developers won't solve the problem of garbage games. Talented developers need more than just money to make great games. Go back again and read, if you're genuinely interested in posting something relevant to the real topic.

Further translation: we've released 8 titles to hit over 80 metacritic in the past 12 months and our competition has spent billions and has released none
That's pretty much it.

People are interpreting this statement in weird ways, but all Jimbo is saying is that they are achieving better results without recklessly throwing money around. And money doesn't solve problems. He has a point.

He is also throwing a bit of shade on Xbox that they had around 15 studios (5 long-term studios), and yet they couldn't manage a single one of them properly. They mismanaged it to a point that none of their studios could release a game on their console launch (and wouldn't release one for 12 months after the launch). Yet they bought Zenimax (and 8 more studios), thinking they will manage 23 studios when they couldn't manage 5 studios.

That's how I interpreted Jim's comments: (1) praising Sony for releasing more games and higher-quality games without spending money, so higher efficiency and (2) proving that throwing money doesn't necessarily get you results in this industry, otherwise Amazon, Microsoft, and Google would have been the top 3 companies in this industry, and Sony wouldn't be sitting on #1.

Is he now? Please show me where he talks about garbage developers.

I mean, since he literally said it and all.

And drop the tough guy act.

The throwing money part is true.

Back in 2013 they also told they were spending $1B in studios and exclusives, and it lead to almost nothing other than a cancelled Scalebound and Rare who hasnt't really had a great track record lately.

This time they're just throwing more money, but on studios whose games are still years away because and some of those are actually making 1st parties for Playstation.

Bro you’re delusional, a gtx 3060 is 400
if you can find it retail. The last GPU I bought was a 1070 btw, which was mid range and replaced my 580, which I also bought for 400 and it lasted me years.

But expect me to believe anyone looking into getting into PC gaming can build a machine with an equivalent of an 8 core ryzen, 16gb of ram, 512gb ssd (just to round it off), psu, with the motherboard, case and a keyboard/mouse and ray tracing capable gpu for 400 dollars?
The current raytracing for consoles is laughable. That ain't no Tracing. That is turd level of Tracing.

You can get it for 800-900 if you buy it as pre-built. But that thing is a taboo for pc players. Consoles sold at a loss, but you have the 60$ they spend on mp connections. That is 490$ online connection +500$ base= $1000. That is not counting the 70$base games, especially for digital games. At least pc players gets discount games alot.

In this industry, you can have all the money in the world but there are two things you can't buy and that's Mindshare and Momentum.

They are not sold separately.

They're not off the shelf parts or found residing in any studio(s) or even publisher purchase. The have to be built from the ground up, and in this industry, they're built on the back of great games. PR doesn't matter. Claiming you got the best console has no tangible influence beyond the sway of our hardcore discussions. You have to deliver on great games. That has, and will always continue to be, the only thing that matters in this hobby of ours.

"You also must give them the freedom to be creative", yes Jim as the they release sequel after sequel and remakes 🤣 this guy is a joke. He's taking a dig at Xbox but all his teams are churning out numbered sequels or remakes of old games (more are rumoured as well).
Dreams
Ghost of Tsushima
Returnal
Destruction All-Stars
Sackboy Adventure?
These are all sequels and remakes? Also, games like TLOU, Spider-Man and Horizon are on their whopping second installment. They are hardly going to a dry well there.

Meanwhile Microsoft is releasing for the rest of the year: Flight Simulator (10th installment), Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5, and Halo Infinite (7th installment). No need to even mention Nintendo, we know what their catalog is like.

Sony is practically garden fresh compared to the other 2. You are throwing some mighty big rocks from the glassest of houses.

He's not wrong. PlayStation Studios have proven themselves again and again with smash hits loved by almost everyone who's played them. All MS has proven so far is that they're willing to spend a lot of money to buy studios they haven't been able to build up and nurture internally. It remains to be seen how the games turn out.

Why are you talking about xbox ?

What about buying SFV, FFVII, FFXVI and Forsaken ? Was this free ?
Who is saying they have not partnered with third parties too? They have not relied on just throwing money around, period. You are making a bit of a goalpost move there…

Sony is not know really for crying about exclusives being bad because they take away games from gamers while buying up publishers and doing timed exclusives.

things change imo, especially under a bean counter like jimbo. was playstation ever known to stretch xgen for over 3 years?

Some post try to downplay Sony‘s strength due to E3 aftermath. Yes, PS5 has surpassed PS4 in term of launch games. I hope Jim can continue the success of PS4.See you at PSX

Also, it's become increasingly obvious that Sony has no grand strategy other than to sell you $70 "premium" games while MS continues to expand it's studio and IP porfolio, grow it's gamepass subscription service, and grow their overall platform through a robust streaming service which let you pretty much stream from anything... starting this year.

Sony have executed reasonably well so far, but they also arrogant, hypocrites and treat their customers like shit and a part of the success the last 12 months or so is COVID driven and is just pure luck.

I feel like Sony and PlayStation are Blockbuster video at their peak, looking at the rise of Netflix (MS and xbox) and not seeing the threat for what it is, their end if they dont adapt.

Just like Netflix goal was to become HBO before HBO could become them, MS goal with xbox is to become Sony PlayStation (quality software) before they can catch up with them on gamepass/game streaming/back compatibility/PC integration and other consumer friendly offerings.
Hahahahahahahaha you say that they sell because of luck, hahahahhahaha damn, thanks I had a really good laugh with that. So you say that a big business is planning on luck to sell? No research, no planning? They have meetings and say “ok we will have luck on our side”, problems solved. What a joke comment. Damn it…..

In what way throwing money won't lead to a success :messenger_hushed: seems Phil has screw lot of mind with his PR. It's a business. The only way to have success it's just that. Oh wait throwing money is intended to spent an huge amount of money? Because in the case seems more a MS issue to me than Sony.

So why is every company selling out of everything?

Cars, Caravans, Consoles, GPUs, lots of different products and sectors experiencing the same thing because of COVID.

I said part of their success, not the reason for it.

What a joke comment.

Facts.... Sony and MS and Nintendo (and many other companies) have had increased sales from COVID.

They have the old mind set as op said. Old business ain't working this gen.

So far, Sony has 1 knife stabbed at themselves. The price tag for their games, at the worst time possible. Considering we are on a pandemic, who the hell raises the price for games to 70$.
And that is when your competition is saying, hey, you can spend that 70$ to get 4 month of gamepass, 5 month for 75$, and you get all our games day1, 3rd party games we sign, and you get cloud for free, they can play on their pc.

That is like giving a head start to your opponent on a racing card.

If they don't adopt to the market right now, they will be left far behind.

Nintendo isn't worried, since they survived a whole gen, without alot of 3rd party games. Its not a problem for them.

I have to agree.

The unnecessary obfuscation around their cross gen strategy aside, it is so far much better than PS4. The only consoles launch that even comes close is N64 and Gamecube among the consoles I’ve bought close to launch.

-Very good BC, not perfect but compared to PS4 its leagues ahead. I’ve experienced several of their latest PS4 releases on my PS5 in a better way than I could’ve experienced it on my base PS4.

-Strong launch lineup, both Demon’s Souls and Returnal are games that are probably in my top 30 list. Spider-Man MM is a great game as well, I just bought the Ultimate Edition. Ratchet & Clank will be my next purchase. I’m eagerly anticipating Horizon Forbidden West, but it can’t really be counted as a launch window game. Still a really good first year all in all.

-PS+ has been really really good so far. This month wasn’t very exciting as a PS5 owner but I hope the next month will be better. PS+ Collection is really good, some of the best games from last gen completely free. I owned pretty much all of them already though.

-OS software is much better than PS4 at launch. I haven’t experienced a single issue with it yet.
