I'm glad Hiska-kun added Wii U to the graph.

Another week that's close to 100K for the Switch, with 4 weeks left 3 million for the first half of the year is all but guaranteed. So third best result for the first half of the year of all time. With this type of momentum we are likely going to see between 6.25 million to 7.5 million Switch hardware sold for 2021 in Japan. Really depends on whether the Switch Pro launches this fall and what type of software is launched at that time to really push it beyond 130K weekly average.

New game launches can hit 100,000, but there wasn't any big launches this week. The #1 game selling six figures is absolutely not the norm, nothing to do with digital.
If you follow the Japanese video game scene you'd know digital is becoming more and more popular, if you want proof look at the weekly sales of the PS5DE and the rise of Steam in Japan especially among pro fighting game players.

It's growing, but digital on consoles is not that big in Japan. We know from Returnal topping the chart in April that digital software sales on PS5 are very low, and we also get approximate digital splits for Nintendo titles that are generally around 20-30 percent.

For Miitopia to hit six figures this week it would need a 75% digital split. The real digital split will be far far lower than that.

The most interesting thing on the Software front is Minecraft Dungeons appearing for the first time in a while and confirming that the game has managed close to 40K physical sales so far this year.
This is the second Microsoft game that has managed over 100K physical sales on the Switch in Japan as the Minecraft IP continues to be the only thing keeping them relevant in Japan.

Next, we have Game Builder Garage, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade & Rachet & Clank. Going from Amazon.co.jp/COMG we can expect Game Builder Garage to have the biggest launch, for Remake Integrade a 20K opening would be a good result based on pre-orders; while Rachet & Clank will probably be below 5-10K physical opening with high sell-through(retailers probably didn't order that many copies).

Top 10 Publishers:

I'm surprised that games like Judgement sells so little in Japan, I thought that was a Japan-focused game.

There were around 300K copies sold with the original release so plenty of second hand copies, hence Sega went with the low low price of ¥1.800 for the re-release.
We shall see how the sequel does but with the massive decline of the PS ecosystem since 2018, it would be very difficult to envision even 200K sales for Lost Judgement.
