Worst E3 In Recent Memory?

MS did really well.

Nintendo will bring home the bacon like always.

Devolver had 1 game I was genuinely interested in.

Elden Ring looks cool. Avatar also seems okay. Mario Rabbids 2 is exciting for me.

Not the worst E3 ever. Not the best.
I missed Devolver's, which game was it?

The times are different nowadays. E3 doesn't make a lot of sense for a lot of games nowadays and isn't very practical/efficient to demo at the show.

Back then you could probably show a game 1 or 2 years in advance because the hardware was so shit you couldn't expect to make the character model or textures any better. The standards were much lower and games lacked the complexity in game design (gameplay wise) that they aren't going to have a bunch of changes happen that they might be afraid to prematurely announce. Now nobody wants to show their game too early because it can look significantly better and a lot of the decisions are tentative. It's also not great use of marketing funds to market a game that's more than a year away because people will forget about it.

If you plan to release in spring or summer of next year; showing off your game at E3 arbitrarily months in advance is a waste of resources and can be way too early. The game can look significantly better within that time and be more presentable, and preparing trailers and gameplay demos is a waste of time because you are going to have to do the something again near launch. Instead they could just do what Sony, Nintendo etc. does, give cinematic in-engine videos early with maybe a slice of a demo if they have one, then just show the game really close to release when it's all polished and ready.

One of the main benefits of E3 in that past is that it gets a lot of people attention because you get all the press together and you share everything to them all at once in person via press conferences and they go back to write in their magazines or websites all about the stuff they saw in written game previews, screenshots and limited videos. However, you don't need E3 for that or for things to trend/spread nowadays. You can just share directly to the people via YouTube and other social media by just releasing trailers or having events (Play, Direct, Inside etc.) because you have something to show and not because of some arbitrary date in June.

Instead of a summer of gaming. Geoff Keighley should instead just have monthly showcases. Where whenever people are ready to show their games they can show their games using the showcase. Bigger publishers can just run their own random events or show some things on the showcase if they want to. Something similar to how Geoff used to host Game Trailers TV on Spike where Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft would randomly appear to show off demos or news about their games. Instead the format can be longer and feature more demos. This way we can get E3 like events year-long and developers aren't wasting time to have something to show at arbitrary dates.

So far it’s been pretty meh, but last year’s summer game event was a snooze fest (aside from Sony) as well and the couple of years prior weren’t that much better. Remember when EA paid people to cheer during their conference?

I don't remember people cheering, but I do remember that poor guy completely choking in front of the camera during the Need for Speed announcement.

There's almost nothing I actually care about. I didn't enjoy any of the conferences (so far). Shockingly, BF2042 was the biggest "huh, maybe I'll try it again".

The fact that T2 "HR" conference was trying to talk about diversity as if their parents didn't teach them to not be racist and sexist shows how this industry is changing. No one cares about the preaching when we're tuning into games. It's the real life version of those 80s and 90s shows telling kids to stay off drugs.

Say what you want about the quality of Shenmue 3, the fact a sequel to a dead franchise was announced after so many years was awesome.

The Powers TV show spot was septic. 30 minutes of shit
Shenmue 3 wasn't announced, a Kickstarter was announced that lead to the game being funded and released, which was fraught with it's own controversies as it was delayed multiple times. Not to mention most people say it was the worst entry in the series and looked awful graphically for a modern game.

It is basically dead event... so what they tried to do this year is the worst one?
Next year it will be even worst because more and more companies will realize E3 doesn't exists anymore.

Unless a miracle happened but with the high profile companies doesn't caring with E3 and doing their own events... the chances to E3 rebirth is pretty low.

So was the Take-Two conference not worth checking out then?

E3 is dead and is not really that important in this day and age. Way too easy to communicate with customers directly via YouTube, or whatever tech you want. Nintendo had the right idea with their Direct's.

E3 as you remember it is never going to return. You can't have massive publishers like Nintendo, Sony, and EA just avoid E3 without degrading the importance of it. It probably going to become an event just dominated by Microsoft that a few smaller publishers will glom onto.
People have been saying this for years and it hasn't come true yet.

It was announced. Could you show where Suzuki announced Shenmue 3 officially prior to that e3? What happens afterwards shouldn't affect the e3 moment. The moment was awesome.

Graphics are getting better which means games take longer and longer to make, so existing games get monetized more and more and the number of new announcements gets smaller and smaller. Add in an industry still rocked by COVID and you get the E3 we have today.

Todays content has been the utter shits.

It needs to be condensed back to 2 days of conferences, and then deeper dives the rest of the week.

I am fully aware that you are right and yet the disappointment lingers on.

No Sony on E3 has a big impact...Microsoft did a nice job but no showed Megatons that could help E3 . Also Square,UBI and Gearbox failed.....those weak conferences hurt E3

Games take time to develop these days. We are getting fewer AAA games. 3 GTAs in the PS2 era and 2 GTAs in the PS3 era and now 0 GTAs in the PS4 era. We had 3 Uncharted games on PS3 and Last of Us 2. To only having 1 Uncharted on PS4 with a smaller expansion game and Last of Us 2. Because we have less AAA games if they announce something every year they will have run out of stuff to show. Unless you don't mind seeing the same games shown again and again. Unless you are a fan of AA and Indie games E3 will never be the same as it's used to be if you are a fan of AAA games only.

I think the best thing to do is instead of turning up to E3 with barely anything new to show or showing CG trailers with title cards for games very far off, better to just not show up and do your own event when you have a substantial amount of content to show off that's exciting.

One thing that stuck with me was Regie Fils-Aime's quote from the 2006 Nintendo Press Conference. Granted, he was talking about the Wii and the unusual remote, that did take the gaming world over for many years. But Changes are necessary for an ever-evolving industry. However, whether those changes are counterproductive is up to debate.

"The graveyard of any industry is filled with the headstones of companies who decided to keep doing things the same old way. Playing only on the margin, making things just a little bit better. That strategy works....for a while, but ultimately it's fatal. Over the years our industry has come to accept progress simply by what’s on the screen." -Reggie Fils-Aime

I sat down for lunch, ready to try and enjoy a conference. T2 was playing and yeah, it was 30 minutes of some HR meeting they let slip through. Nothing ever came out of it during my time watching unless you wanted a lesson in modern HR.

I feel there’s some ok and good games. But i don’t feel we’ve seen anything where everyone was like : “I want to play this when it released”
There’s some game I want to play, but none of them i want to play Day 1.

And when i see a lot of people pushing gamepass, I feel I’m not alone. No one wants to spend $70 in anything presented so far Outside the fan of the franchise.

I do my best to avoid any trips to HR. That's interesting taking the developers Take-Two has under it's umbrella

You just can’t make it up can you it’s fucking mental! I don’t understand it we all have to listen to this shit every day in all other forms of media news, Radio, TV, social media etc etc.

I watch E3 to get away from all the political agenda and boring bullshit I’m not inherently against it, I just don’t care I just want to relax and enjoy a bit of gaming news but they have to infect everything with insanity 😂.

If Suzuki had come out to announce that Shenmue 3 would be fully funded by Sony, it would have been an epic E3 moment. Having him come out in front of an audience pleading for donations to make the game was just cringe inducing.

There’s been bad shows. This one is among the worst. Square, MS and others have really stunk. Hopefully Nintendo saves the show tomorrow, but I’m not expecting much, likely just a BOTW2 showcase and maybe more ports and indie crap…

Worst E3? Sure. I don't mean that to slight Xbox or anything, I think they did a great job at E3. But in general the buzz of E3 is just not here anymore, I think those days are over. I remember being hyped for E3 because every 1st Party Publisher and 3rd Party Publisher was there, with surprise announcements. Now, half of the industry doesn't even participate. Ones that do, are probably holding back content for some other show or digital reveal.

So unless all of these guys agree to participate again, I think it'll get worse and worse until E3 is no longer around.
