I want to play the first 3 Sonic The Hedgehogs, should I go with Steam or a Sega Genesis mini?

I'm in the mood to play the first 3 Sonic The Hedgehogs and while of course there's always emulation I'd like to do so in an official capacity if I can.

I've noticed they're on Steam, but I have some questions, are there scanline filters? How are those ports overall?

I've also had my eye on a Sega Genesis mini, trouble is they cost over 100$, the benefit is you get to use an actual Genesis controller and you get all the other games of course, but for right now I just want to play the Sonics, but does the Genesis mini have a scanline filter as well?

Any info would be appreciated.

3 isn't on the Genesis mini. Only way to play it right now is on Steam or Xbox.

The Xbox version has the original Michael Jackson music.

What's the deal with the original Sonic 3? Is it just because of the Michael Jackson music?

Also, can you hack a Genesis mini to add roms like you can with a SNES mini?

Great video on the subject:

I believe it's a bit more complex than it just being MJ (and his Estate), I believe the story goes that one of the composers he worked with is the problem and that person wants money that Sega won't pay.

You could just wait for the Sonic Origin Collection which will have them all + CD, but they may have messed with 3's music.

There's also Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on 360 if you have one and are not appalled by the 360's D-Pad

It's boneheaded that Sega didn't secure the rights in perpetuity at the time but some people didn't anticipate the commercial value of retro gaming.

This was actually I think a bit of a problem for the first two Sonics for a while too, as the music was composed by the J-Pop band Dreams Come True and they had to pay each time they put it out, but I believe they eventually worked out a deal to own that music. They haven't managed to do the same thing with Sonic 3's music, maybe they want more money or maybe it's lower priority for Sega.

download RetroCopy, google rom sites :) Sonic 3 is currently not sold on any modern system due to rights issues with the music. but soon they will actually rerease it in the new origins collection, which will also be fully widescreen ported

I enjoyed the Genesis Mini and you can add whatever games you want in minutes with a pc. I got it on sale though.
I still need an answer as to whether it has a scanline filter like the SNES mini does.

Talk about serendipity, but when is that set for release?

Xbox is the way to go if you want to play Sonic games. And if you are in retro stuff, there are some pretty great Sega Vintage Colletions, such as Wonder Boy for example.

At this point? Honestly just wait for the new collection out in a few weeks that's using the Taxman versions and will include Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Get the STEAM version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Google and download Sonic 3 A.I.R. When you run it, it will ask you for a ROM.

Use the ROM that comes with the STEAM release.

Enjoy the best way to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It has widescreen, a remastered soundtrack with all the MJ music and tons of options.

I'd hate to be crass, but playing the classic Sonic games with an original Genesis controller is the only way to go.

The Genesis mini provides just that with its 1:1 recreation of Sega's famed 3-button monstrosity,

I loved this controller! Doesn't get enough recognition in my opinion..
I'll recommend the 3DS Classics versions, the bummer is that you need to play with the 3DS controller, but the stereoscopic 3D effect is really well-done. As someone who felt no urge to play old Sonic games again all these years later, it felt totally revitalized to me. Also, that only covers 1&2, third one is nowhere to be seen as usual. No scanlines in this version, I don't believe..

Steam has something called Workshop and its amazing what people put on there and get away with. Sonic 3 is probably on there and probably has 500 variations. There were even newer retro games on there that were selling for 20 bucks a piece on Steam itself. I don't quite get why Valve doesn't clean it up or companies order cease and desists for illegal material on the Workshop. Sega seems to be one of the most abused companies on Workshop, but at least the Phantasy Star text adventures exist there translated.

Wish they'd included the 6-button variant, but I appreciate you can buy that separately (and there was only one 6-button game included), still looks great, but I personally prefer to play MD games with the Xbox controller, man I wish the MD mini (or Hakchi/Lunar) supported the Xbox One controller...

I'm pretty sure you can put all sorts of CRT filters (only one built in though and it aint great) and others with Hakchi (which I hear is much better than Lunar), but I can't condone downloading roms though. Honestly, I downloaded like a hundred+ MD and SNES roms and got them working for the MD mini, but my conscience wouldn't let me enjoy them and truth be told, when you have that many games, it's pretty much impossible to appreciate any of them (as John Linneman from DF rightly says). If you own said games on other services or even the original cartridges (or they are no longer for sale anywhere), then knock yourself out guilt free!
