ELDEN RING releasing 21.01.2022 - Summer Game Fest TRAILER 2021

I would say Bloodborne was quite the showcase at the time. I remember getting it on launch day and having that next-gen feeling when playing it. But I also think that came from Japan Studios technical support.

Honestly, ER does look like a PS3 Remaster - but I couldn’t care less.

Bloodborne also ran at 30 fps, with occasional drops, and permanent frame pacing issues which made it feel choppier than other 30fps games.
Given the visuals and how it targets last gen consoles, I expect Elden Ring to run at high res and locked 60fps on SeriesX/Ps5. It should easily be the best running console version of a From game ever, and that's good news.

And I know I'll get quoted by people saying Demon Souls looks nicer and also has a 60fps mode. But it's made by a different team, with different strengths, that could focus their time and efforts on a different area because they were making a 1:1 remake of an 11 years old game, a game with more linear level design and less content (locations, weapons, bosses, enemies, etc) than future souls games, that already had a world, level design, combat system, boss design, art direction, etc ready to go and that, for all we know, might have had a similar budget to make Demon Souls look nice than FROM did for this entire new game (From usually doesn't work with the crazy budgets of super high end AAA games)

Honestly, they could've called this dark souls 4 and I still buy it. If it's not broken don't fix it, I can't wait to play it.

Now i just have to beat all three of souls games that I haven't completed yet.

Kingdoms of Amalur had RA Salvatore for the story and the lore, and it was boring as hell, and I say that as having been a fan of his work when I was younger. Fun game though.

Soulsborne didn't really need a big-name author to help with the stories and the lore, they were already pretty good, plus being an author doesn't necessarily lend itself to telling a good story when it comes to video games. Still looking forward to this though, since I'm a cuck for anything Soulsborne.

Martin’s contribution to this worries me more than anything. The reason why Souls has such a unique method of telling its story is that Miyazaki was a huge Lord Of The Rings fan, but as his English wasn’t 100%, he only got a fragmented idea of the story - which was something he recreated for Dark Souls. And I love that about the Soulsborne method of storytelling: fragmented.

I worry that Martin will westernise both the story, and the process of creating it, because Miyazaki might defer to him because of his celebrity. This would be a huge mistake. I don’t want a more run of the mill method of delivering the narrative. It kinda sucked some of the joy out of Sekiro for me, and I want a return to that fragmented, harder to uncover narrative of the other From games. I can only see Martin buggering that up, quite frankly.

Best series I have ever played. So much fun and challenging, be patient and prepare to die!

Edit - In the end it really does not matter.

When the reviews for Elden Ring come out and it is just as amazing as it looks, I will happily eat crow while playing the game.
Mr Martin hasn't been involved with the TV series for a couple seasons.
The books are great.

You will eat crow after Elden Ring is a GOTY contender.

The 4K trailer makes a huge difference to my impression of this but why do I feel like I’m looking at the PS4 version in the trailer? Game was obviously made for PS4. It’s a little disappointing after moving to Demons Souls on PS5 but I’m sure the game will be epic good even if the graphics are lagging A little.

The game will be incredible, you are worrying way too much. Season 8 of GoT went wrong for many reasons none of which include Martin.

I mean ... he completely bombed finishing the story in a timely manner despite 1000 different promises that would never happen. Left those two on a runaway train with no tracks left. The writers of the show bombed, but a huge part of that is that they had no real support from Martin at that point and then made some really bad calls. Martin bears responsibility for sure, but not creatively.

Yeah, it's definitely not a "next gen" game. PS4 graphics. We'll have to see if there's 4k and all that when it releases, but I doubt there will be much if anything. Probably just faster load times and haptic controls. Still looks great to me though. PS4 stuff looks great. Just not up to that next gen level. I'm sure it will still play just great though and still be a beautiful game. Can't wait!

But it's not a downer in the slightest that it resembles a From Software game. That's a huge plus actually. Souls fans are relieved that From has maintained their get design ethics with this project.

Dark Souls 4? Day one 😁

Exactly. After Sekiro I was afraid we'd get more named protagonists with one weapon and no Elden Bling. Fuck that.

It's the same exact core formula but with its own unique twist.
If by "core formula" you mean "there are bosses and they are challenging", yes it's quite similar.
But the Soulsborne and Sekiro have completely different combat system so they do not play the same at all.

In Soulsborne, you have the stamina management which make the combat more methodical and slow. You have to depleted HP of the bosses and you can take your time for that.
In addition you have a huge variety of playstyle (melee, range, heavy, fast, sell, dodge, shield...).

In Sekiro you have no stamina(just for that the gameplay is completely different). The combat are much faster. You to not have to depleted the HP of the boss but their "posture meter" which recover over time.
So you have to be on their face most of the time for attacking and Deflecting. There is very little variety of playstyle.

Honestly saying that Sekiro and the Soulsborne play the same, it's like saying Devil may cry play the same as Souls borne. Because you know "they have the same core formula", you advance in level and beat bosses.

Our lord and saviour Vaati’s breakdown of the trailer.

Nice.

I didn't catch the fact that the character is jumping from its mount to do a jump attack and the mount vanished.
It's so cool. Make me eager to see more about the mount gameplay.

Damn ! FromSoft at it's best doing a top notch gameplay

Art direction is off the charts. And souls games have never had good graphics.
The worlds have always been low poly and low res textures. Demon's Souls look liked trash and it was amazing.
This game looks great. Too many people expecting too much.

The core is the exact same cry harder.

Er… the gameplay loop is exactly the same in both games. The differences in Sekiro are single character, combat style, no multiplayer, more linear story. That’s it. There is far more in common than different: bonfires, third person action, repeated death, soul collection, corpse runs, mobs & single enemy encounters, resets at restarts, branching environments, fast travel, lore through item description, optional areas, the difficulty curve, ‘safe’ hub location, RPG level up system, etc.

The twist being completely different gameplay, a completely different setting, almost no build variety, no summons, no PvP, etc.

But hey, there are levels and bosses. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Bloodborne: very different combat, a completely different setting, less build variety, less weapons, inclusion of chalice dungeons.

But hey, there are levels and bosses.

….point being Sekiro is as much a Souls game as Bloodborne is. All three share the same core gameplay loop, with their own unique mechanics.

I will not deny that there are some similarity but it's different enough to be different genre.

Soulsborne are action RPG and Sekiro is an pure action game.
Of course everyone has it's own definition of RPG but the skill tree is not RPG for me.

A lot of the common point you mentioned can apply to a lot of games :
Third person action, "soul"/xp collection, mobs and single encounters (I don't really get what you mean with this one actually), branching environment, optional areas and RPG level up system (if we consider the one from Sekiro being one)

Let's say the gameplay loop is the same but inside this loop there is combat (which is the main focus of Sekiro) which is completely different between both. edit : so the thing we do 90% of the time in these game are completely different.

I can settle on the general gameplay loop being similar but they sure don't play "exactly the same". They actually play completely different.

And the core gameplay is exactly the same in every Soulsborne game. Not having a level up system or coop doesn't change the core.
Shit even the block/parry button is the same as block in DS...
Next you'll be saying Bloodborne is nothing like DarkSouls.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I'm gonna get it, I have them all
So don't get me wrong cuz I love the games, but honestly (and I know I'm gonna get heat for this)
Ain't it about time he stopped remaking the same game 😐
