Hi,

Hope someone can help with something I'm thinking of doing:

I'm looking for a portable device that can play retro games: hopefully up to the 128bit generation.. GameCube, PS2 etc.
Looking for something I can plug at least 4 USB controllers into it. It's basically going to be my family retro device for travelling.

I currently have a raspberry pi 3 with retropie retroarch installed and it's fantastic but only plays up to PS1 games due to its power. Ive seen raspberry 4 in action and that can barely play Dreamcast games.

I'd be open to a handheld retro device or perhaps modding a Nintendo Switch?
Whichever gives me the best results.
Open to any solutions you guys thinking are good.

Anyone have a good setup they can share?

It sounds like you're looking for a laptop or some other sort of portable "traditional PC". A modded Switch will still only give you PS1 / N64 emulation and very little beyond that (outside of a few other games running somewhat decently by sideloading Linux on it but...)

First thing that comes to mind is just a laptop and possibly a USB hub if you don't have multiple bluetooth controllers. You can get one with HDMI out if you need a bigger screen too, but can also be played just by itself for example in the back seat of a car.

but this means you have to find a pre-patched switch from 2018 or acquire the modchip from sx os that has dried up.

Yes a decent used slim laptop and you should be good to go even for multiplayers, you can even convert the laptop to "frontload" so that when you boot it just goes into the multi arcade experience
(sure you are quite aware of this as you have a pie)

A hacked swithc is your best bet though, as you will play all newer multiplayer games made for the switch(popular with kids),
plus emulated retros if needs be. Just have to find a method of entry a pre-patched unit or new sx -os modchip (the hardwired one) which are hard to acquire these days.

A budget laptop should do the trick. Especially if you want to get into some PS3, Switch and 360 emulation. I bought a laptop earlier this year with a 3070 and it's amazing being able to run games from Atari to PS3 games and next gen games as well. Something that is lacking in these next gen consoles other than exclusives.

I'm tempted to try a Switch alright.
If only because it would less complicate the controller problem.

I have one of the older switches and should be able to do it and I don't really use it anymore for games so not worried about bricking it too much.

Do you now what emulators you can get on the Switch?
I assume the usual.

N64
Megadrive?

I assume It can't do PS1 or Dreamcast or anything above?

Laptop would be the best option of course. Was just hoping there was a piece of tech out there that I didn't know about

I did lol'd at budget laptop and 3070, it would be the ultimate for sure.

pFBN can run neogeo, cps1, cps2, cps3... arcade roms and megadrive, master system, game gear, pc engine.... console roms.

but yes no ps1 ps2 or- dreamcast on switch that I know of.
A decent samsung phone will run those well though...

but as you know retroarch-like emulators, all have some sort of learning curve with their placement of bios, game directories, cover art, settings, etc , etc, that may take a few days to iron out.
I probably geek out more on setting this up than actually playing them games..

Tons of choice if you are willing to put in a little work.

How good are you with solder? It's not too hard to do it yourself if you are willing to give it a shot. You can buy a few kits.



If all that seems too much, just get a laptop.

Honestly, if you have a new enough android, just use that with an attachable controller like the Kishi (there are cheaper alternatives).

Most android phones can at least do up to PSP emulation. Stronger phones are pulling off GC and PS2 emulation with ease.

oh shit, you just need this, and um get whitelisted for Dom's Retroarch( so that you dont have to pay for 20 bucks for developer's mode which you have to reboot your console into and use it for free on "retail mode")



.....and game over man play all retroarch compatible games including ps1 ps2 dreamcast on the go on a console with multiplayer support AND portable screen!
