Kraken Vs ZLIB: 29% Smaller Game Sizes Losslessly, 297% Faster Decompression on PS5

Look at this genius. :messenger_beaming:

He didn't make the Nintendo Switch version, that was Panic Button studio, which also ported the Wolf games to Switch.
That's the point, genius :messenger_beaming: his min spec was the Xbone and yet the game runs on the Switch. It's almost like scalability is a thing!
The min spec Axel worked on was the 2013 Xbox One with 8GB RAM. His min spec now after nearly a decade will be XSS with just 2GB extra from now. Truly a beast indeed... :messenger_beaming:
Good thing that RAM doesn't matter much with the increase in I/O speed. It's almost like next gen consoles like the XSS were designed with the low RAM increase in mind...

LMFAO... Should have stayed with 8GB if RAM didn't matter much :messenger_tears_of_joy: Why 10?

Clearly, there's a RAM issue as many games sacrifice more than just the resolution, some devs omit ray tracing entirely e.g. in Control by Remedy due to and I quote "hardware limitation". Their words, not mine. :messenger_beaming:
It's not just id Software dev who are vocal about the S's limitation.

I don't see the issue, Control runs like a charm :messenger_beaming: the power of scalability.

Well I was just driving, incidentally, new update is great with new map and shit.

So size, umm: 21.2GB version 2.0.0.9 (latest obviously)

Still sdk:gen9aware, so not sure why they had the need to redownload the whole thing.

Man this game is so great, can't wait for the X|S patch.

Current gen version is out if you wanna download.

Couldn't the game package download in its native format, ready to use? Since it's compressed anyway.

Strange, really, maybe intentional to sell more cards.

I just tested the files, lots of them. You can take 95% of games on the storage card and just move it between Series X and Series S and it plays, no additional download required.

That's pretty dumb then, really. So it's 45GB vs 21GB on PS5?

So it optimised for an edge case wasting bandwidth and storage space for the common one (game downloaded on internal storage)….

So, bigger game installs driving people to buy their own proprietary memory card and you need two versions because Series S needs its own additional version (not only pushes people to make an expensive purchase sooner but you are saying they are doing that to cover an edge case that exists because they chose to make the XSS and fracture the user base with two HW profiles… well… right…).

Nope, not good… you could say anti consumer ( ;) ) or yet another reason why XSX users can be upset about why XSS exists and what it means to them (and XSS users who already have only 512 GB of SSD and are, taking Riky at their word, unnecessarily downloading the XSX version to their internal storage or external memory card too).

Yet another thing a digital only cheaper XSX SKU instead of the XSS would have made it easier and less wasteful for all users then… 🤷‍♂️.

It's worse, actually, XSS has around 336GB of actual storage. This is the dumbest delivery ever.

While I do believe the PS5 has better compression I don't believe it should lead to gaps that large. Something else is inflating the size and it seems a bit dumb to me.

Yeah just read few posts above and you'll get it. Getting all files of XSX/XSS/XBO inside one file which inflates the installed file.

I did read that but I don't understand why Smart Delivery isn't fixing that.

The smart thing would be to ask which versions you want if there were multiple ones. Then you just download the ones you need.

At least that's how it should work IMO.

Pretty much. But I did hear that there were some issues with upgrades though. Like if you upgrade from the PS4 version to the PS5 one it wouldn't eliminate the PS4 installation. I believe Destiny had that issue.

You just delete the old version. They are are not tied together.

I think either captainraincoat captainraincoat or Dr. Kitty Muffins Dr. Kitty Muffins that said they had the issue.

Sorry about dragging you two in here but I remember one of you saying something like that due to your avatars.

Nah, downloading PS5 version but when you click download it doesn't give you the choice, so you just go to the download page and eliminate the PS4 version. Would you like me to download the whole thing and start it as well? Might just keep downloading it and play with my brother-in-law and sister who somehow still addicted to this garbage. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

If it doesn't waste your bandwidth it would be interesting to know.

No caps here, but internet is kinda expensive here anyway. I pay 42 OMR with 5% VAT included ($109.2 USD) monthly for 200Mbps down/50Mbps up and a 4K streaming device known as Jawwy TV.
Sorry I got it wrong, it does not work without the X1 build 🤔

Have you upgraded any game before from XBO to XSX? Check the files. If this is an anomaly then it'll be fixed by the devs, as it should be. In the end, they are a very small studio as I understand.

Yeah sure it seems like it behaves like DLC, but I never seen this. Hmm... And yes XBO > XSX in the game I hit Y and it started to download, as prompt said (and payed 250CZK in between)...

I had a strange one like this but not the whole game. It's the Fenyx DLC's register as PS4 addons, although they're PS5 in their core.
I guess sometimes this stuff happens, hopefully it gets resolved : )

It's sooo crips

Apparently Wreckfest is NOT a smart delivery game. Smart Delivery implies an automatic upgrade from one console version to the next. Example would he if you own Sea of Thieves and transfer the data from One X to Series X, it will auto download the necessary files to make it the Series X version. Wreckfest is treated as though the upgrade is simply DLC versus an actual native version. I don't know how that works internally, but as far as I can tell, for the end user, you are stuck with two version of the same game. Its fuggin dumb either way.

Apparently the Xbox version is just a patch, not a native version like on the PS5. Apparently this was done so they could charge the $10 for the upgrade.

In that case it's pretty retarded, of course I have enough storage /s

Is it confirmed or speculation?

I think they fucked up here and should expect a fix pretty soon. Thanks for reporting.

If the massive I/O and cutting edge compression isn't enough...
you can imagine how hot the dust collecting belly button is, you can tickle and tease around it and whisper sweet words to your beloved PS5 💙.
by the lastest games comparations no absolutely isn't lol
and btw the kraken as every other oodles products can be used also on Xbox if they want

Yes if they want, but they're sticking with Zlib and BCPack (their own compression tech for textures), and if Oodle Kraken decompression is used for the Series X|S, it'll be decompressed by the CPU. Problem with that is that it would take about 9 Zen 2 cores in a CPU to decompress the incoming stream of Kraken-format data.

no it would not be decompressed by the CPU as the support for oodles texture is been added later in the PS5 ...those Decompressor in the consoles can be updated as they want

GuiltyGear being half the size on PS5(compared to PS4), how do you compare this on Xbox?
You're clearly in a wrong thread.

Have you been smoking PCBpack PR too much?
