Sony Bend working on a new IP open world game

Jason's article which is proven right by Herman's comments today.
We know they just propose Days gone 2 with a co-op to Sony and Sony canned the project. The fact they helped TLOU2 doesn't means they straightly worked on it. Tons of external studios have assisted ND in marginal aspects but it's not exactly as develop TLOU2. And frankly Days Gone is a mediocre game. Played it, finished multiple time but we can live easily without such IP. Better if they are focused on something of more original.

I think it's mind boggling that Sony even green-lit Days Gone with its gameplay setting. Might as well exist in TLOU universe.

Days Gone just comes off as an also-ran. "Hey! Look over here, I'm a post-apocalyptic-open-world-zombie-type game too! I'm really gritty and serious, I ride a motorcycle and have a beard!!"
Tlou and Days gone are two completely different games, Days gone is an open-world action/shooter, tlou is level-based stealth game.
'I ride a motorcycle and have a beard', was that ment as a negative or positive remark?

Mostly just pointed it out cause it Days Gone doesn't differentiate itself from much of anything we've seen in games or movies/shows made prior to its existence.

lol no mention of how they forced them to slave away on tlou2 for a year then wasted another year developing an uncharted IP that went nowhere.

they are literally two years behind and only just now beginning work on their new IP. This game is like five years away.

Just give me Days Gone again but with dinosaurs instead of freakers/zombies, and a much more focused story and I'm good.

All that work to build a new world, narrative, characters and systems that was somewhat fresh, but the building blocks were in place for an easy, successful sequel. Now unlike 95% of AAA, its back to the concept idea board. it must be a horrible feeling and not surprising the OG devs have already left.

Having played days gone recently on pc, it is much better than tlou 2. Wish we were getting days gone 2, instead it seems we will get more progressive circle jerk crap from ND. TLOU is a pretty but mechanically stale series with a bad story and terrible characters. I know this will trigger some of the limp wristed types on this forum, but please try to be adults for once gaf.

The old guys that left were holding back the studio with their terrible writing. Their next game will be far more successful and they are thrilled to be working on it.

You don't need a Days Gone 2. Anyone who's beaten the first game knows that it's actually two games in one cause the thing just doesn't fucking end.
Exactly my feelings. I liked the game a lot, but it was wayyyy too long. Wish it ended by the first end (lol).

And I must add that I love new IPs, hopefully they will try something fresh. I like what they did with Days Gone, but it is time to try something new.

Shame about Days Gone 2, I’m intrigued to see what they come up with next though.

So far we know it’s an open world game with vehicles, maybe they’ll try a GTA clone instead, or it’s a spiritual sequel following a new character like Days Gone was to Syphon Filter.

Playing as O’Brian would be interesting.

It's weird to me cause I rarely finish games these days, replay even less and yet I finished Days gone twice! First when it came out and now with the 60 fps patch.
What I am trying to say is that apparently to me it wasn't too long😁

The way I see this, big jump compared to their previous game to days gone. So the devs learned a lot of things. Yes It is easier to keep focus on a sequel and improve. But, that’s why I think Sony is the video game company willing to bet on new IPs…risk taking! Any other company would be trying to milk the franchise to death! Although I also think Sony is quickly to abandon IPs and move on.

I like long games, I also like how the devs gave you a reason to keep playing.
Any other company would had made the second half of the game in DLC.

Cool! Can't wait for the genre defining experience only a Sony exclusive can provide. Best in class third person platforming, best in class third person shooting... Best of all, a witty narrative that hooks the player and addresses some hard hitting social issues that only a game is able to respectfully handle AND without ever taking control away from the player! Subtle use of analogue restraint to allow the player to fully absorb the environment and oscar worthy dialogue as they meander through the richly detailed 4k HDR environment.

No doubt there will be some really detailed close up shots of our protagonist as they sidle through narrow gaps as new areas are loaded so we can really appreciate the effort that went into the character model.

I can already smell the 10/10 scores.

I loved Days Gone but now they can take all the things that made Days Gone good and put them into a new IP.. I also think it was a good move!

I really enjoyed Day Gone (the only open world game I actually finished in recent memory) but don't think there needs to be a sequel.

Would much prefer if they strip the zombies entirely and make an all out biker game.

This dude lies like no end. What about TLOUS Remake? Are Bend Studio already done wasting their talent and helping ND remaking TLOUS?
Jason didn't say Bend was helping with the TLOUR. He said they did help ND with the TLOU Factions game and with a Uncharted spin-off before moving to their next big own Bend game: that Bend new IP.

The TLOUR was being made by the new Sony San Diego studio, who according to the guy in charge of that studio, he took some people of the team that Sony has to help big teams (ND, Insomniac, Santa Monica, Bend...) with their cinematics and art assets and created that new small team because he wanted to make CG animation movies or tv shows of the main Sony IPs (Uncharted etc) using the in-game cutscene assets of their top games, but Sony didn't like the idea and wanted them to focus on videogames.

Then since they already had assets, he tried to make a remakes and (note: starting from here it's info from Jason, not from the boss of the studio) started with the first Uncharted because he wanted to make their own games instead of supporting other studios and thought it would be easier for them to start with a remake and that would be easier to get a greenlight. But found the game needed more coding and design work than he originally considered and found it would be too difficult for them.

So they canned it and thought about making a TLOUR would be easier because the gameplay isn't that outdated and would be easier to get the greenlight to sell it in a bundle with TLOU2 PS5 and to use it to promote the tv series. So that new studio took the lead and ND overviewed it because obviously is their IP.

Then Hermen Hulst became boss of PS Studios and saw the TLOUR and didn't like it, and thought they spent a way bigger budget on it than the one required for similar projects. So asked ND and that studio to swap their roles to complete the remaining stuff of the remake: now ND would lead the project and finish it with a reasonable budget and ensuring the proper quality while the other team would go back to their previous role, what they do well: to support with cinematics and art.

That guy in charge of the team and a couple more left the studio to create his own new company to do their original idea: to make CG animation movies or tv shows of popular games using their in-game assets.

No Days Gone 2 confirmed. It's almost like Jason Schreier is usually right in his reporting, despite how you may feel about him :pie_thinking:
Jason has sorces inside Sony, but he makes shit up. He pretty much said Bend had became a support studio to Naughty Dog, when thats crearly not the case. While Bend was working with Naughty Dog in a dead period, they are also working now on they own IP.

Jason was pretty much spitting doom and gloom about Bend being "demoted" to a support studio. And thats a lie.

Instead, one team at the studio was assigned to help Naughty Dog with a multiplayer game while a second group was assigned to work on a new Uncharted game with supervision from Naughty Dog. Some staff, including top leads, were unhappy with this arrangement and left. Bend's developers feared they might be absorbed into Naughty Dog, and the studio’s leadership asked to be taken off the Uncharted project. They got their wish last month and are now working on a new game of their own that will be part of a brand new franchise.

What part of his article sounds untrue? Where is the doom and gloom? It's like 8 words of "doom and gloom" at most. The only thing he said about Bend in his article was that they tried pitching Days Gone 2, it failed, and then two teams worked on Naughty Dog games. Then, some devs there were worried, asked to be taken off and they were. Now they're going on the new IP as mentioned in this Q&A.

Hopfully they work on the combat gameplay and make it fun, plz don't waste time adding every rpg mechanic then can find. Getting chased by the herd was fun, everything else was shit.

As much as I liked Days Gone and hate how the series ends like this with the cliffhanger, this is the best move for Bend. Sony already has a much more successful zombie-themed game, and a Days Gone 2 would've just been stuck in TLOU shadow.

The ending was more interesting than the whole game. I was like where the fuck is all the lore. I firmly believe Days Gone was a Last of Us prequel game. That had development issues so they reskined to not tarnish the brand.

Yeah they are not making another DINO series. I think Horizon‘s robo dinos cover that area. I do see them making a wizard/medieval/lord of the rings type of game. Sony doesnt have one of those.

The games story definitely picked up immensely in the second half. But, the game wasn't intended to be a TLOU prequel. The game takes place in the
Syphon Filter
universe.

This makes sense as it would be a good response to the various WRPGs that MS is working on. But, I'm honestly cool with whatever they make. Days Gone was so close to being exceptional to me that I'm positive they'll nail it with the next game.

I will take New IP over a sequel any day.

Not to mention, they always have the option to fall back on their catalogue if they want sequel monies.

The problem with TLoU is that the sequel (no matter if you liked the story and the characters or not) was all about the people and the infected felt like they were just in the background. If Part 3 ever gets made it's probably going to stay that way.

Days Gone was a game with a focus on different things and I definitely think that both IP's could continue co-existing.
