Dolby Vision/Atmos is NOT Exclusive to Microsoft, Could Come to PS5

“A blog post was mistakenly published by a local Xbox team that included inaccurate information regarding exclusivity of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision on Xbox Series X|S,” a Microsoft spokesperson tells The Verge. “There is no exclusivity agreement of either tech on Xbox. We are proud to partner with Dolby to offer Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision to gamers on Xbox and will have more to share about the general availability of Dolby Vision on Xbox Series X|S soon.”

Microsoft’s statement is carefully worded in such a way that suggests, without confirming, that rival platforms like the PS5 and Nintendo Switch could get the advanced surround sound and HDR tech in the future.

If PS5 gets Dolby Vision for BD playback, I'll use it as my primary UHD disc player.

Hmmm. Idk, but im my old receiver, a Denon AVR-S720W (a 7.2 that I set as a 5.1.2) that is exactly what I do; I set it's surround back ports as topmiddle (could also be topfront or front high) and voi-la, atmos setup ready. And since the PS5 is sending it's sound as lpcm, if the game has the "top" sound information, the receiver would just reproduce it in it's speakers as I configured it. You can see in it's back that those ports are assignable.

Sony's 7.1 AV receiver allows this. It can be used for 5.1.2 instead.

Forgot this was how my STR-DN1080 worked. But I assume I'd have to go into the options to change the speaker setup to 7.1 instead of 5.1.2 so that the PS5 could send it height sound disguised as rear.

Yeah because Xbox FR localisation division is somehow aware of internal exclusive agreements made by Microsoft. But Xbox moneyhatting this tech kinda fits the narrative of some of you guys even though Dolby Atmos is present on Xbox since 2017. At that point you can close your ears to everything else and call it "back pedaling".

My god, do you ever rest? Do you ever even smile?

I didn't even post in the previous thread, and for good reason. Think about that for a second. In fact you should go back to the old thread and have a look at which post(s) I "liked".

Microsoft aren't going to fuck you.

Better bring that to CX
Did you watch the video? Dolby Vision at 4K/120 Hz is a nice thought, but unless they make a game mode version of it, there is likely to be far too much input lag and trade offs.

Also, I really have a hard time believing Dolby Vision would offer that much over HDR in gaming. In gaming manual adjustments to HDR can easily compensate for the lack of dynamic metadata.

I love Dolby Vision in movies/shows it does offer some nice benefits over generic HDR, but I know my C9 will never support it and I don't feel like I am missing much if anything.

As for the topic, I'd love for Sony to offer Atmos, if only I can see the words Atmos on my receiver instead of the awful PCM.

It could have been on the ps4 too but it wasn't and I don't believe it will be on the ps5.

Maybe if enough people ask for it but I highly doubt it.

What about Tempest? I'd say Atmos is better, nobody would use tempest then.
If you have a surround sound system then Atmos is better by default since Tempest doesn’t work with it. If you use a headset then Tempest is better on paper but no proper comparison test between the two has been done as far as I know.

I hope we don’t get again into this weird « virtual surround is better than physical surround » argument but in case we do: no, it’s not.

Over the last 18 months or so I have gotten to where I do not trust Xbox messaging. Not only do they rely on FUD with their social media "partners" You have to read the wording carefully on their official statements. I obviously like some of the things they are doing or I would not be giving them my money but I wish they would clean up some of their messaging.
