Kraken compression combined with Oodle Texture is showing great benefits on PS5 so far, even surpassing expectations by turning around the table making it have the biggest storage space virtually.


EDIT: Deleted Series S as some games are reported to be smaller than the X version.

Well they are native games so they are using each systems I/O with the latest compression technology.

Its interesting to see and makes the smaller SSD not seem so bad for the system..

That would also be nice to see. Basically a list of these 12 game sizes on the XSS.

Fair enough, but don't forget gamers like me have the seagate expansion card giving us more than double the default storage space for Series X titles.

True but that comes at an additional cost. Just like cold storage for the PS5 and the future update for expanding the internal memory. Which would probably be cheaper than the Seagate drive.

I'll be curious if it holds true once we're into pure "next gen only" territory. We've already seen Sony's new compression setup applied to PS4 games to great results; does Microsoft's touted Velocity Architecture need specialised implementation, or are we seeing compression ratios that will hold across the generation? And on that note, could Sony's 1st party devs drive the file size down even lower once they've got a handle on the PS5's IO setup?
 
The only thing is the direct storage isn't being used yet for xbox series consoles yet. So yes PS5 is taking adavantage of their ssd more, but The series consoles haven't even started to make use of it. I think PS5 may still have smaller games but it will not be much going forward.

What does Direct Storage have to do with game size? I thought the only reason why the PS5s is smaller is due to the compression used.

Perhaps PS5 games can't use this superior compression and also stream in more data at the same time because the superior compression takes a bit longer to process. So you won't get the faster I/O speeds if the files are using the max compression rate?

Also I'm curious if BCPack is not being used on MS's side due to PC versions not being able to take advantage?

RAD (and now Epic) gonna be making out like bandits if Sony's decision to blanket license Oodle to their developer program creates a defacto standard moving foward. Smart move for them to ensure that compression and the kraken speeds for their platform. Just a shame it's not an open source standard like zLib, though clearly it's more effective right now.

True, additional cost, but this isn't really about cost. And as of now there's no working method to provide more space to install and play PS5 games on Playstation 5. On Series X I have nearly 2TB of playable next gen games space.

That said, the PS5 thanks to its compression architecture is more than making up for the space advantage Series X by default starts with before the seagate expansion, which is damn impressive, and I suspect that's the point of the thread. Solid thread. I think this information is pretty useful.

Some games like Tony Hawk 1 + 2 are actually 22.0 GB instead of the 31 GB listed according to some posters in the thread (a screenshot proves this in a reply). Hitman 3 was also described as being 65 GB instead of 77.

I also noticed not all native PS5 games that are multi-plat are listed in the sample (NBA 2K21 is a notable omission). To label this list as a comparison of all native PS5 titles is a misnomer by u/pmartinez52.

I’m glad to see that the PS5 compression is making the most out of the space available, but this post lacks attention to detail and is misleading.

I know it's definitely coming, but just acknowledging that it isn't here yet almost a year after release.

Good questions. If the loading times are the same, then technically the PS5 is actually doing more work faster because of the higher levels of compression it needs to work around. It's also worth remembering that in order to have a comparison at all, the game needs to be on both platforms, so its unlikely we'd be seeing specialised data setups that use everything the PS5's IO setup can do. That'll likely just be the first party titles... which we obviously won't have comparisons for. Of course, with Microsoft's DirectStorage also being available on PCs, multiplat developers will need to work with it for 2 out of the 3 platforms; does this mean they'll make better use of it? I actually don't know.

Well Sony did give out the numbers for decompressing data and they are higher than the Series consoles. That could be due to how strong the decompressor is.

I just found the thread PS5 Game Size Comparison : PS5 (reddit.com) and it seems some people are reporting smaller sizes on Xbox after download/install and some larger on PS5 after download/install. Hard to get a clear picture based on store size vs install size and how much goes into "Other" or language packs or whatnot. It seems PS5 will be smaller in general still, but may not be as drastic.

Yes but the official figures did not take Oodle Texture compression into account. There could presumably be a sweet spot where compression past a certain point takes additional time.

So essentially PS5 devs would have to choose between equal file size to XSX (and faster I/O) or smaller file size (and a similar I/O speed)?

It is coming to Windows, but "introduced with Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S". Introduced implies usable. So what is the basis for your assertion it isn't being used yet?

DirectStorage is almost definitely being used. The entire Velocity Architecture that isn't being used, which includes Sampler Feedback Streaming. SFS won't change game sizes, only memory efficiency while playing games. Will be interesting to see what the future holds.

I don't know how anyone can ever run out of space unless you're constantly playing several massive games daily/weekly. I have 7 games on Xbox Series X and the storage capacity is at 42% as I have over half of the 800GB of SSD storage space available.

PlayStation 5 wise, it's literally one exclusive game at a time so until Ratchet, I have the entire SSD available to me. lol.

What is the point exactly?

I currently have 23 games on my internal Series X drive and a more than a hundred on the multiple external drives attached to the console.

Given that so many Sony fans are falling over themselves to dismiss Quick Resume, it seems that they don't like to play multiple games at once, so as long as you can fit one game on the PS5 you should be good to go.
 
I’m not sure about how accurate some of these numbers are as the guy pulled them from the store page although PS5 definitely tends to have an advantage overall.

Hitman 3 is 64.9GB with everything installed on XSX not 77.8GB.

Subnautica is 5GB on PS5 not 3.8GB.

Immortals is 30.49GB on PS5 not 22.3GB.

Tony Hawk is 22GB on XSX not 31.9GB.

Valhalla on XSX is right but the PS5 version is apparently 61.5GB not 41.8GB but I cant check that.
 
I also noticed when I was checking installs that PS5 doesn’t install all the language packs and you have to pick them while it seems XSX just installs everything.

This might be less of a hardware advantage due to compression and more a software advantage due to PS5 having a much more sensible way of handling languages.
