For me, Half-Life is one of the games that paved the way for PC gaming. Without it, we wouldn't even have gotten Steam probably, or the other masterpiece games Valve delivered later on!

OoT was insanely innovative. Z targeting still widely used to this day in 3rd person games. Gets my vote but Id probably rather play MGS now.

Those were innovative for console games only. Z targeting was needed because of how inefficient controllers are for precision. Half Life or Thief for example have shaped the entire industry. Every platform and leaked into every genre. PC games of 1998 were head and shoulders above any console game released

MGS was a very very solid game and ahead of its time but…..Ocarina of Time was from another world. One of the best games I ever played.

Very hard decision between Metal Gear Solid and Ocarina of Time. In the end, I voted for Metal Gear Solid. However, Ocrina of Time is a legendary masterpiece as well.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Xenogears and Resident Evil 2

German Hops

GAF's Nicest Lunch Thief
Xenogears and Resident Evil 2
Agreed 100%

Any list for 1998 without Xenogears or RE2 is instantly invalidated!

As I was 5 in 1998 my top games from that list are the games I actually played when they came out: Ocarina of Time, Banjo and MGS.

Bioshock and Deus Ex.

They're not on the list? I don't care.

edit: whoops it's only 1998! Still don't care though and sticking to my point.

Half Life, i've always been a PC gamer and bought the game at the time, it wins easily on PC, it was huge at the time, Console games and PC games were mostly separate back then, hardly any multiplatform games back in 98, even among Sega, Nintendo and Sony, well there was Tomb Raider, which sold loads at the time, but it's not even on the list.

That's a branded term, it's called lock on with movement. Lock on in all variants is old.

But Zelda needed it when it came out. So did similar games on N64 due to subpar cameras in early console 3D, that's why the game is associated with it despite it not being new.

so what game invented lock on with movement?

I hate being among the popular crowd, but OoT is still the best.

Crash 3 having 90+ rating shows why Metacritic is worthless.

Or there's vastly more nintendo fans on this board being us centric which is the only place the N64 had great sales.

Also Crash isn't Sony exclusive.

Btw Crash 3 outsold mario 64 in Japan. Nearly twice as much if you remove pack ins. Game has to at least be decent to do that.

I'm not from NA, so I have no idea why you're making that first line to me.

I played Crash 3 just a few weeks ago. It's like all the other PSX Crash games alright, but overall a really forgettable experience. The hitboxes are extremely disjointed. Both from Crash and most of the enemies. And the only memorable song throughout all the games are Crash 3's lobby theme. The boss fights feel sluggish. The games haven't aged very well. Also having to break all the boxes on every level to get the jewels is such a dumb criteria.

that's not fair!!!!! look my avatar!!!! both mgs and OoT are my childhood it's like saying who do you love more, your dad or mom.

Because it's a NA centric board and Crash isn't an exclusive which explains the low votes for Crash 3.

Although your description is odd and makes me wonder... Well I'll not accuse you of not playing it, some people like Crash 3, some like Mario 64, but we can't really downplay crash sales either way. They are too consistent, so a lot of people do like them. Including MC reviewers.

I mean Crash went on a 7 year break and outsold in copies almost the last 18 years of mainline Sonic titles with one game trilogy so it's clear aged bad or not those games have a legit following.
