Gaming Industry vs Apple: The Big 3 not "checking" Epic's arrogance can lead to Apple fully embracing gaming [THEORY]

in every industry, there are several types of companies: undying Brand Loyalty (Playstation), your Play nice with everyone (Microsoft), and your Avant-garde(Nintendo) who tries to be different and does its own thing.
(you also have companies like EA, Activision, and Ubisoft who have a formula that they stick to it no matter how much you may dislike it.)

Then you have companies like Epic who, unlike the others who stay in their lane and respective industry, try to leave their own industry to pick a fight with another company.
By Epic picking a fight with Apple, regardless if they win or lose, could give Apple the backdoor they need to fully move into the gaming industry. It May even sound like this:

"We here at Apple love gaming, but how videogames are distributed currently are currently being manipulated for consumers"

Make no mistake, Sony, Microsoft, even Nintendo are watching Apple every move in this battle. But not stepping into it in some way may hurt them.

Playstation will lose exclusives, Xbox GamesPass will lose subscribers and Nintendo....could lose the mobile Hybrid market when Apple makes a Hardware to their Apple Arcade.

nintendo literally survived because of their ips. wii u was a disaster but the usual suspects sold like crazy on a 12mil userbase. sony got naughty dog, santa monica, etc if you like cinematic games you arent going nowhere

Your concern at Epic should be directed more at Apple. If Apple were to make a console it'd be 100% digital and you'd only be able to buy games through the App Store and nowhere else.
thats....what every gaming company with a console does with their 1st party games and exclusives. i don't get it.

No I mean 100% locked to Apple. Third parties wouldn't be allowed to sell codes for their games anywhere and there would be nothing physical ever.

Right now on the Xbox and EShop you can get digital download codes from external retailers. So even if you're 100% digital you're not forced to go through Nintendo or MS for your games and can usually get them much cheaper that way.

I’d give them a try, apple makes the best consumer electronics by far.

..if apple goes into gaming thanks to Epic picking a fight with them, they would buy up 3rd parties exclusive, guaranteed. its not a future i want, but it a possible future if and when Apple decides.

what your referring to is the fear I'm trying to convey could happen

Apple is already doing that with mobile games and have been for about two years now. They've been buying up high-profile mobile titles and making them exclusive to Apple Arcade. That has nothing to do with Epic. There are some big mobile titles (like Mistwalker's new RPG, a new Star Trek game) that would be huge if they were on all platforms, but Apple bought them for Apple Arcade.

I also don't see the logic of Epic causing Apple to get into the console business. If Apple made a console (which they probably aren't because the Apple TV can play Apple Arcade games already), it'd have nothing to do with Epic.

yes, Apple has been doing things in gaming prior to the Epic battle. What I'm saying is that it could go even further if we take into account the rumors of Apple wanting to create dedicated hardware for gaming and the Big 3 having the worry about Apple as a potential gaming hardware manufacturer.

But those rumors make zero sense and sound like they are made up by a 4Chan LARPer with no clue as to what Apple produces.

Apple literally just released an upgrade Apple TV this month to support 4K 60fps and that device ALREADY fully supports Apple Arcade and any Bluetooth controller to play all of the games on your TV.

I mean so far Amazon and Google haven't been able to truly break in yet, and based on their current status I don't know if they ever will. And I think at worst, both of those companies have a similar chance as Apple of being successful in the industry. And even if Apple successfully breaks into the industry, so what? I'm sure they would bring some interesting new ideas or experiences like any new console manufacturer would. And if you didn't like their console you wouldn't have to buy it

we're speaking theory here, not to go on the tangent, but Apple has always seen itself as a software company first, they've always made hardware for specific software even if their current hardware can do more than one thing.
What's more software than gaming? Now, would i say Apple could develop games on their own? probably not, but they have the R&D, their own in-house chip processors, M1, and a lot of money to buy a lot of software deals.

Apple's backdoor was support for Last and Current Gen gaming controllers across macOS, iOS and tvOS.

Unfortuantly at the front door is Apple's current prices with what is offered for storage. Almost 50% of the Macs on Steam are 256GB models with 8 GB of RAM. Storage can be expanded on Macs, but Apple's own App Store doesn't allow an easy easy way to install your software in anyplace other than /Applications on the internal HD.

The latest Apple TV, which doesn't even ship until next week, tops out at 64 GB of storage. No expansion options.

All of these options are fine for lower tier Switch-level gaming, but the Switch is still unique on it's own and Apple getting in the door at that level beyond what they have already (way larger mobile and tablet install base than Nintendo) is going to need a steady stream of exclusives which could become hard to subsidize at 5$ a month for Apple Arcade and so many people get upset about the thought of paying more than 5$ for an app already on mobile devices.

OP you do realize that you are oversimplifying the way these companies operate right?
yes, but all im saying is that Apple can spin this in any angle, this is just the angle gamers don't want to hear.

if Sony can go to CES and show a fully working Electric car, saying Apple could go into gaming is the least surprising

I use Android an phone but I am not more concerned about Apple entering the console market than I am with those that are in it now. I would welcome the competition. Especially in the digital space. One thing about Apple. They make sleek devices. Expensive but sleek. Not too concerned about the price though because they can't price themselves out of the market and have success.

  • If apple wins, exclusivity wins?
  • If epic wins, exclusivity ceases to exist?

Apple entering the console market will hurt Switch the most because Apple will go mobile/console hybrid and the only console doing that is Switch, Playstation and Xbox will surely feel the effect but they'll keep going as usual, PS got their weird exclusives business where they hurt the 3rd party publishers and Xbox got deep deep deep pockets that can keep them going with gamepass which is a non-brainer 2 years from now when all the Bethesda games come out exclusively on XSX

If Sony couldn't beat Nintendo in the handheld market no one else will.Especially Apple.
