Xbox Series X And S Start Receiving Dolby Vision Gaming Upgrade

There have been a fair few reports from Xbox Insiders over the past few days suggesting that Dolby Vision support might have rolled out to certain games on Xbox Series X and S, and now Microsoft has confirmed that is the case.

Xbox senior marketing director Guy Welch highlighted this on Twitter earlier today, and Microsoft provided an official statement to Forbes, explaining that the feature is currently in testing for the two next-gen consoles.

So, what is Dolby Vision? In simple terms, it's an HDR imaging technology that is technically able to provide greater image quality than HDR10, although it requires a TV or monitor that supports Dolby Vision in order to utilise it.

According to Forbes' research, it seems Borderlands 3, Gears 5, Wreckfest and Halo: The Master Chief Collection are all being tested with it at present for select Alpha-Skip Ahead Xbox Insiders, with the brightness, black levels and color saturations all appearing "more refined" with Dolby Vision than when playing the games with the usual HDR10.

Cool, but as I mentioned in the other thread, this is going to be a big no from me.
UHD120hz and DV are mutually exclusive on TVs (some EDID space nonsense), and there's no game mode preset when my TV is in dolby vision.
At 60hz and standard modes the input lag is just too bad.

It's a cool update so far, makes a huge difference with some games like Vahalla. Not limited to the four titles listed, seems to be every HDR enabled game as well as all auto HDR titles using it

Hopefully some level of automation is brought in here, where Dolby Vision is the default at games locked to 60 or under and everything else turns it off.

I can cope with no game mode, but missing out of higher framerates would suck.

Freesync premium is off by default on my cx

Yeah, I was playing around with the settings on mine as I have a Series X, Gaming PC and a PS4 Pro connected, found that Freesync on the TV disables Dolby Vision on my Xbox but if I turned it off I could run VRR and Dolby Vision so getting the best of both worlds. I presume it's something to do with the 40gbps rating on Series X, I'm not sure. You could alter by HDMI port so the PC runs Freesync.

is it better than HDR10? I have LG c7, normally HDR adds LAG
If you use the PC input setting on the LG OLED any picture mode you select will have the lowest input lag.

I think I'll stick with 120fps. Tempting, but 120fps with HDR10 is better than 60fps with DV.
The last bit in the articles just suggest it should be possible to get 120 with DV working but it requires a TV firmware update

And here is the actually quite interesting one from Dolby:

“Dolby Vision is a frame rate agnostic technology. Some TVs do not support Dolby Vision at 120 Hz currently and we are working closely with TV manufactures to update firmware support for Dolby Vision capabilities at 120 Hz.”

It might be framerate agnostic, but it's not bandwidth agnostic.

bandwidth shouldnt be the problem...the xbox series X itself is 40gbps, so is the LGCX and many HDMI2.1 tvs anyway. chroma subsampling would be used at 120htz regardless.

I like that Xbox is supporting this, because honestly, HDR10 has no real standards about how the picture is intended to appear on displays.

Granted, HDR10 is still better than SDR, but I'm tired of games with "broken" HDR because either the developer can't create decent calibration tools, or there's too much variance in display capabilities that it's impossible to get a truly calibrated image. Just as Dolby Digital was the solution to surround sound gaming, developers should also be utilizing Dolby Vision for picture quality in the future.

With that said, we probably won't see full adoption for several years, though.

It shouldn't be a bandwidth thing, so far it's an EDID limitation, there's literally no space in the EDID to enable/support both 120hz and dolby vision.
That Vincent teoh guy did a video about it.

as a owner of a Sony TV, they dont have a "Game Mode" in Dolby Vision mode... does it mean its gonna be input lag galore!

XSX video bandwidth maximum is 40Gbps vs 32Gbps for the PS5.

According to this page you would need 42Gbps for 4K 120Hz 12-bit colour: https://k.kramerav.com/support/bwcalculator.asp

So I have no idea if it’s possible with the limitations of current consoles.
you can set the series x to 4K 120 htz at 12 bit and you get 12bit 420 (24gbps)..422 should be possible with an update.

Tv manufacturers would also have to update the TV's to make it possible probably by sacrificing something else. even so were out here talking about dolby vision gaming....cant expect to get everything you want.

just need LG to implement the 4K120 support, was reading recently they are testing it but haven’t confirmed which models it will be rolled out to. they will probably shaft C9 owners like myself and have it for CX and new C1/G1 models even though the C9 can support it.

Agreed. DV is better for movies, with dynamic metadata, but most HDR10 gaming is dynamic anyway.

On my X90J I have HDMI3 set to DV. That's what the receiver is hooked into with the PS5 and Apple TV 4K connected to.

HDMI4 is set to 120hz and the XSX is connected there with the uncompressed audio being passed through HDMI3 to the receiver via eARC.

Not seeing a big difference picture quality wise on my CX with Dolby Vision in MCC and Destiny 2 compared to HDR.
Dolby vision really won’t be that much of a difference I’ve found, it’s more of a standard of consistency for applying HDR to media. It can look better sometimes but it’s nothing you won’t notice unless you’re switching back and forth between the two.
