The Arkham trilogy is a dream come true for someone who grew up watching Batman TAS. Aside from Knight's overreliance on the Batmobile, it's damn near perfection.
This.

Although there's also that fourth one made by a different studio that was fun as well.

Origins.

and one that I personally count as a Trilogy even tho it really isn't (it is in terms of gamedesign principles as each of these built upon the previous game in terms of leveldesign and general gameplay/controls. so it is a trilogy in everything but name)

•GoldenEye
•Perfect Dark
•Time Splitters 2

and I would include Dark Souls, but Dark Souls 2 exists and so nah... naaaahhhh...

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 through Sonic & Knuckles (4 I know, Quadrilogy status)
Shining Force 1-3 (plus the Game Gear Trilogy that also kind of hit the Sega Cd and fan translated Final Gaiden, also Shining in the Darkness was great)
Phantasy Star 1, 2 and 4 (lol, skipped 3 cause I have yet to play it)
Super Mario Bros 1-3
Uncharted 1-3
Max Payne
Trails in the Sky
Trails of Cold Steel
Resident Evil
Jak & Daxter
Yakuza (any entry)
Castlevania
Silent Hill
Mega Man
Dragon Quest
Ratchet and Clank
Golden Axe
Streets of Rage
Kunio-kun Series (River City Ransom is one of my absolute favorite games and super dodgeball and soccer were sooo great and funny)

There are actually quite a few trilogies I love and plenty more out there. I do think its harder for devs to do now though despite much of the industry being plagued with sequalitis. Plenty of series also went south on the 3rd entry, such as Dino Crisis, man the first two games were amazing. Parasite Eve also rings a bell.

1. Halo 1, 2, 3
2. Metroid Prime 1, 2, 3
3. MGS 1, 2, 3
4. Ico, SOTC, TLG
5. Uncharted 1, 2, 3
6. Gears 1, 2, 3
7. GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas (PS2 trilogy)
8. Tony Hawk 1, 2, 3
9. Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9 (PS1 trilogy)
10. Guitar Hero 1, 2, 3

In no order. These games are what came to mind first. I already regret not remembering Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, but fuck it. Damage has been done. I'm sure I forgot loads more.

(Edit) I actually was supposed to start my list of with God of War 1, 2, 3, but forgot haha.

Off the top of my head, top 10

Contra
Darius
Tekken
Soulcalibur
Timesplitters
Grand Theft Auto
Devil May Cry
Ninja Gaiden
Mega Man
Sega Rally

First three games. Or any combination of three, cause it’ll work out either way

Fantastic examples all throughout this thread!

Although I'll say... LOL, a couple of people stretching the definition of "trilogy" and including a random set of 3 games from a given franchise. That's not how it works 😂

Anyway, three trilogies I'm a big fan of are all Street Fighter related trilogies.

The CPS-1 trilogy: Street Fighter II

The CPS-3 trilogy: Street Fighter III

Each time one of these games came out, it represented the absolute pinnacle of the 2D fighting game genre. They hold up, to this day. And I still play all of them, to this day.

Anyway, three trilogies I'm a big fan of are all Street Fighter related trilogies. (Bolded is my favorite within the trilogy).

The CPS-1 trilogy: Street Fighter II
- Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
- Street Fighter II' ("Champion Edition")
- Street Fighter II' Turbo: Hyper Fighting

The CPS-2 trilogy: Street Fighter Zero/Alpha
- Street Fighter Zero
- Street Fighter Zero 2
- Street Fighter Zero 3

The CPS-3 trilogy: Street Fighter III
- Street Fighter III: New Generation
- Street Fighter III: Second Impact ("Giant Attack")
- Street Fighter III: Third Strike

Each time one of these games came out, it represented the absolute pinnacle of the 2D fighting game genre. They hold up, to this day. And I still play all of them, to this day.

Third Strike truly is near perfection

Dark Souls and Witcher at the first to come to mind.

Both were amazing from start to finish, but Witcher 3 might be the best game I have ever played. As a total package it was everything I ever wanted out of a video game.

Halo 1-3
Gears of War 1-3
Resistance 1-3
Sonic 1-3
Street Fighter Alpha 1-3

i loved Mass Effect 1 and 2, but 3 sucked ass. So I can’t pick that.

We never got a Capcom vs SNK 3! That should have been a trilogy.

I don't think it gets much better than MGS 1-3 trilogy wise. They had pretty much everything. Compelling/zany narritves, iconic charecters, innovative mechanics, grand scale, visuals far ahead of their time, I could honestly go on for a while here.

Each was an individual masterpiece. Everyone seems to have a different favourite out of the three, and no choice is wrong. Masterfully designed games IMO.

I'd love to say Dark Souls, but Dark Souls 2 is such a worthless disaster of an excuse for a game, so no.

Sonic 1-3
Super Mario Bros 1-3
God of War 1-3
Monkey Island 1-3

Are the only trilogies I can think of where all three games are actual masterpieces to me (in the genres I like, obviously.)

I can think of so many trilogies where two of the games are great and one is shit.

Witcher
Dark Souls
Prime

Everything else is trash, at least as far as trilogies go. Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite games ever made but 3 was so fucking awful

I realize I haven't play many trilogies so here's my list

  • Metal Gear Solid 1,2,3
  • Demon's Souls/Dark Souls/Bloodborne (same universe for me, Dark Souls and Bloodborne are sequel to each endings of Demon's Souls)
  • Ico / Shadow of the Colossus / The Last Guardian
  • Batman Arkham series (not the best but worth entering the top)
I am gradually playing the Assassin's Creed franchise (on Black Flag now) but not worthy to enter the top. I've seen Ezio's trilogy mentioned several time but I can't put it there. My mistake is to have played them back to back I guess. Games are good but way too similar (gameplay, settings, protagonist...), I got slightly burned out on these one.

German Hops

GAF's Nicest Lunch Thief
+ Metal Gear Solid 1-3
+ Ninja Gaiden NES trilogy
+ Grand Theft Auto PS2 trilogy - III, Vice City, San Andreas

I honestly cannot think of any... It's always the same scenario - 1st installment=great game, awesome new IP! Sequel=even better, while you couldn't think it can get any better! 3rd part=absolutely worst of the bunch, completely killing the overall great impression of the entire trilogy... Sometimes it's the second installment that's the worst, like for example in Resistance series, but like I said, I cannot name a single trilogy as a whole which I can call great. Maybe if DICE was able to make a proper BFBC3 that would be it, because the first two are so damn good.
