So being pixar lookalikes, means it needs to be cartoonish? I think we're debating art style to graphical tech at this point. Art style is subjective compared to objective graphical techniques. You may love one art style, while another person hates it. Doesn't automatically make it pixar though fyi.

It still has nothing on even the oldest pixar movies though lol. That's the point. If all you two are thinking is "art" style, than the first R&C looks Pixar quality. On a technical note, there are no games with pixar quality. No matter how much you pour your heart out, facts will remain facts. Just being cartoonish with barely any raytracing =/= Pixar.

This shouldn't upset either of y'all two. It's just the reality. We don't have consumer GPU compute to get to that level. And we definitely are even further away with console level GPU's. Take the console mentality aside and imagine it we had this level of lighting in any game? Combine that with whatever art style you two are fixated on, and you'll be close to pixar quality. Until then, let's all continue to keep dreaming.
As far as I’m aware, Pixar is defined by making a specific type of movie. If going to see the latest Pixar movie, you aren’t expecting to see Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator.

R&C is infinitely more reminiscent of Pixar than an RT marble rolling down a table. Each day, every day, and twice on Sundays.

I don't care what kind of amazing tech some game or hardware uses as long as it dosn't improve the overall visual experience.
Thats just something for tech nerds to wank on.
Guess what, i'm a tech nerd and i love seeing the behind-curtains process of how these visuals are delivered. Plenty of others like me out there too. 3D rendering or just the developing process of how to achieve certain effects can be very interesting.

Its as if we have someone explaining the manufacturing process of certain paint and praising its quality, with some people listening and finding it interesting. Then ABC-persons comes along and starts attacking the one praising the paint's quality because ABC-persons don't like the painting where said paint is being used on, or worse they just don't like the artist who made it. In other words, a completely besides the point criticism.

Well, on topic:
Nividia obviously sucks for promoting the new rtx cards with that demo if it can't be run properly on these cards.
The purpose of this demo is to display their tech to the best of its capabilities, not be a comercial game where the average joe with a rtx2060 can have fun with. It was always going to be very demanding and naturally target the RTX 3090.
From what i've read around, a RTX 3090 can run it at 1080p with 30+ FPS, or at native 4k at 30fps with drops to 20, so the demo is working as intended.

For fun

Watch this video and make your own thread if you want to. Tag me in the thread if you'd like but i won't contribute to derailing this thread further with you two. Yeah it's low quality and resolution, but still it looks much better, and technically is. We just aren't there yet. Maybe in cut scenes, sure. But gameplay wise, nah. That's the future.

Oh I get that absolutly.

But hes been praising specific things in games and saying this game looks/is better then the other one when in fact the one hes praising looks overall way worse then the other.
This is what bothers most people and why they disagree with him.
Additionally hes always talking down from above and not accepting other opinions. ( at least thats how I've experienced him and his posts in the past - might be my subjective opinion though )

Anyways lets drop that topic.

Yeah as a demo its impressive for sure! I just don't think we will see stuff in this quality anytime soon. Might still need at least 2 generations of games/hardware until anything close to this quality will be seen in some games.

from reddit:

"
It's unplayable on a RTX 3080.
9-11 FPS at 1440p
22-24 FPS at 1080p
30-45 FPS at 720p... with frequent drops to 7 FPS
"
These fuckers advertised 3080 and 3090 with this demo year ago saying it runs 30 or something stable... right. So I am not bothering with omniverse right now
DLSS?

Most likely, though i think we can get fairly close to it with what we have today.
Minecraft RTX with the right shaders can look amazingly life-like (if you ignore the squary look at least)

Keep in mind i'm talking about a fully playable game here, and a extremely dynamic one at that.

Yes those still images are fantastic, but minecraft is lacking living, high polygon environment/creatures with vivid animations.
So its basically just one part of the game that sticks out. :)

Its nonetheless an impressive feat!

Have you seen RT benchmarks of:

WoW RT (AMD wins)
Fortnight RT (AMD wins)
Dirt 5 (AMD wins)
Godfall (a tie)
RE 8 (a tie)

?
TBH nope I havent seen them.
Do you have any links to the reviews/tests?

But still, was anyone able to test this on an AMD card? 😅

I am specifically talking about lightining here, since the purpose of the demo is showcasing lightining, and lightining is arguably the most important aspect to achieve photo-realism.

Things like animations and creatures tend to be mostly tied to CPU, and the polygon count importance depends on the scale we're dealing with. A house in Flight Simulator 2020 definitely isn't as detailed as a house in RDR2, but the amount of houses and distance of the landscapes on-screen in FS 2020 is miles higher (pun intended).

Does it support DLSS--I have a 2060 and well, it will need it to run this thing anywhere near decent frame rate, I mean a good slide show.

I'll report back with numbers it it runs at all.

Big difference between Nvidia making a marbles demo on NASA supercomputers with all the time in the world to promote RTX cards vs. expecting random game company x to do something this complicated in an actual game, plus adding gameplay, AI and dolby audio.

Name one game company that will make something even 1/10th as detailed as that marbles table.

That's why AMD/Nvidia demos are always short canned videos that have zero gameplay. If they try to promote the gpus with a reasonable demo that reflects an actual game in motion with real time gameplay, the visuals will tank 90%.
The whole hype about RT is not about better visuals yet, but easier development pipeline of better visuals...at least if we are talking about lighting in general. Rasterization has better performance vs quality in almost about every use case scenario, but it takes more production to do so.

My last Nvidia card was the GeForce4 Ti4400 lol.

Was great back in the day, and I loved downloading and running the demos.

They want "Pixar" graphics until you actually give it to them.

RE8 is an interesting tie
Celebrating the fact that slightly faster at raster NV GPU is slightly faster with RT enabled, right?
As if all that "green chips are years ahead in RT" was bovine feces, right?

It surely looks so.

Oh i'm sorry I thought we were taliking about raytracing and thats why you listed all the RT games AMD doesn't get beat in, except your data was wrong and I was just helping you fix it.

To piggyback on this because i have seen people misconstrue what people mean by looks like a pixar movie to meaning the technology behind those movies. Lots of production companies use the same technologies, news flash, Sony Imageworks, ILM and others use same technologies Pixar uses but, you can't say something like Pacific Rim or Lego Movie looks like a Pixar production even though they use the same technologies as Pixar.

Based on some of the feedback I was thinking about my downloading them but seeing as the video memory is apparently an issue then my 3090 should be able to handle it and if it's someone entertaining, maybe worth keeping around for the Showcase aspect of it.

I think one perspective people need to embrace is the fact that we are advancing and with advancements comes more stringent hardware requirements. Clearly the amount of Ray tracing and it's not Showcase with this marble demo requires some pretty hefty hardware. Much like you run stuff now at certain settings somewhat like prices and you know that it's made for hardware a little bit ahead of its time.

Hopefully this tech puts the pursuit of graphics to rest and we can start focusing on better game design, controls and AI again.

But look at power consumption. It's just using 98 watts when it should be using well over 200W or at least close to it if a well-optimized software is using 100% of the GPU.
If it's taxing the RT units that much, then it has the whole GPU stuck waiting for the bottleneck in the RT units and the few CU units assisting them.

To add nothing but confusion to the conversation, though, Pixar was on the forefront (and I believe generally pioneered) a good deal of the technology that these companies went on to implement in their projects. All those early Pixar shorts like Luxo Jr. and TV commercials helped formalize Renderman and the RenderMan Interface Specification (which built upon the Reyes rendering system by Lucasfilm's Computer Graphics Research Group, and that team spun off to form the fledgling Pixar.) RenderMan was a specific licensed software tool, but its RISpec API was utilized in and connected to a variety of CGI services. So while of course there were other CGI studios active before Pixar launched its first film in 1995 (the "second-ever CGI feature film" called Cassiopia came out five months later, but it is... uh, not "Pixar-quality graphics"; Antz came out in 1998, and its studio PDI has almost as long a history in animated computer graphics as Lucasfilm/Pixar,) a lot of what Pixar/Lucasfilm CGR can be seen in the path taken by much of the CGI industry.

Or something like that. The whole "Pixar-quality graphics" discussion can get silly if we take it too seriously.

Yeah he said things that were true. A lot of people took offence to that I guess haha.

really a bummer. Wish we stopped running off experts/insiders. Same deal with D dark10x

I’m not saying these people should be worshipped, I’m not saying they should never be questioned, but some people legit went out of their way to attack VFX. Often personally. VFXVeteran VFXVeteran hopefully comes back

I said it last year and im saying it again, this shit is the most impressive looking game/ demo ever. This is soo far ahead of anything we have right now, like nothing comes close. Hopefully next gen we can have this at 4K60 with ai upscaling to 8K even.

because i use a 55 inch 4K oled (c9) as my pc monitor and i sit 1m from it. Also tested some games at 8K on a Q950R and shit just looks insane, the amount of detail you can see from this close is just insane. With the graphics showing in this demo it just stupid to stay at 1080p and loose all the fine details and overall sharpness. Just imagine this at 8K with DLSS 3.0 running 60fps or even higher, why wouldn't you want better graphics at higher resolution and frame rate.

While that's great and all.. it's far away. You are talking a couple of generations. That kind of bandwidth and RT cores is unheard of. I'm just happy with what they are showing now. We're finally into RT for games.

Yeah probably, but next gen is still 7 years away and that means roughly 3 GPU generations. So there is still hope, maybe the RTX 6090 can achieve it.

Like games have been delayed, I don't think Nvidia/AMD will be releasing every 2yrs. There is no need to when people can't even get their hands on one. We'll see.
