Nintendo breaks record for highest operating profit earned in a fiscal year by a console maker

Imagine you’d have predicted this on here after the Switch reveal... lol!

Very well deserved. Switch is a great little device with some astounding games.

I find surprising that Nintendo does not a proper retro strategy. Today, they could be selling NES/SNES/N64 consoles (with proper HDMI support) and cartridges at premium price and probably they would be completely sold out.
I think if Nintendo and Xbox have done a deal you’ll see all of Nintendo’s retro stuff from NES to Wii U on Game Pass in it’s own category like the EA thing. In return Nintendo will get GP on Switch through streaming aswell as an absolute fuckton of cash from MS aswell as a percentage of MS’s GP subscription cash due to the Nintendo games on it.

This is why I admire Nintendo, I know most here only care about games and "fair prices" (you know, Nintendo is a charity now) but observing them with a business POV is always amazing, they just do what they have to do as a company and the results are tremendous.

Where's my "crying" reaction?
The turn around in sales from the Wii U is amazing, I liked the Switch since it's reveal, but even I was not prepared for how well it has done.

Considering that Nintendo was in such trouble with the Wii U they really deserve it, Switch is a great Console although i don't have one for now.

Looks like Nintendo doesn't need any help from GTA, COD, and AAA 3rd party games at all.
I was hoping for a GTA Chinatown-like successor on Switch you know, built from the ground up similar to RE Revelations. Branded handheld-centered releases could sell bonkers with much smaller budgets, just like MH Rise. Millions of sales guaranteed for quality releases, proven by the Switch software sales track record.

But I guess the ship has sailed now, we didn't even have The Sims for Switch. Can't say I'm not disappointed with the current 3rd party offerings.

I'm still disappointed that GTA Chinatown Wars didn't get a successor on the 3DS. GTA CW was great. One of my favourite GTA's.

Totally agree, even though it's pretty much Nintendo first party offerings that are pushing sales, you can't help but think third parties are missing a trick here by not making some Switch exclusive games built for the system and it's demographic.

Are you really expecting cutting edge games on this type of hardware and with so many remakes?

Most people I know have their Switch as a second console to their Playstation or Xbox. Playstation and PC is the strongest combination in terms of AAA gaming and performance which leaves the Switch as tertiary. And regardless people are buying the current crop of games so there's no incentive for Nintendo to push the boat out for cutting edge stuff as long as demand is there.
Cutting edge shouldn't imply graphics. BOTW was cutting edge and is a Wii U game. By cutting edge I mean the magic that Nintendo has when they actually put forth some effort. Odyssey definitely applies but that was made when Nintendo was in a fighting position. Whenever they're profitable it seems like meaningful titles grind to a halt.

I think Switch is totally fine as a main console, the software library is massive, honestly no need for a 2nd system unless you're someone who wants RE titles or other 3rd party games that don't make it to Switch. My point is, Nintendo could be doing a hell of a lot more and everyone knows it but certain people are OK with it. That's fine, it's still a valid point though cause Nintendo has been doing this stuff for decades cause people put up with it.

Well deserved as far as I'm concerned. The Switch is an extraordinary concept, and their games are quite unique while being mostly excellent.
Nice but not revolutionary. The Lite looks just like a regular handheld. The regular switch hooks up to a TV.

OK.

Always about the games at the end of the day when Nintendo is concerned.

Not really a war when you consider Nintendo are not even going after the same market as Sony and Microsoft, it's just the core gamers that see all this as a big competition, I just like the fact Nintendo are surprising so many on here, and have no issues with all three manufacturers doing well, it's a healthy time for video games.

I think the lite is a regular handheld, and like you say it's more of an evolution than revolution, it's so similar to the Wii U in many aspects.

Congrats to Nintendo for making cheap stuff and getting people to buy it at a high price.
Or for making a cool piece of tech that appeals to a wider demographic than just people that own every console and a gaming P.C, and do not spend most of their spare time playing games and talking about them on the internet, I am including myself in that slight slur. ;)

Right; but what Nintendo is doing has nothing to do with how fanboys act

And there's a huge difference between wanting an industry to be healthy and cheering on maximizing profits, particularly since the actual scale of the industry hasn't grown. They are making more money off of roughly the same amount or less people than past generations.. AKA they are figuring out ways to sell us things that cost them less, for more... it becomes even more bizarre when people act negatively towards a company doing the opposite.. willing to give us things that cost them more, for less.

It doesn't make any sense; I am a Playstation fan, I do not wear their profits on my sleeve like some badge of honor. I am also a NIntendo fan, and same thing there.. and an Xbox fan.. and I certainly am not mad that they are willing to lose money selling me things. That would be idiotic.

The "healthy industry" thing is always what people say.. in threads full of people being insanely childish who are absolutely not cheering on industry health, but some bizarre "win" they think they have for choosing a specific console that profits more.

Safe to say and the end of Switch life it will generated more profits than PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, PSV, XB, X360, and XB1 combined.

From WiiU to the hardware that profitable more than the entire gaming hardware of Sony and Microsoft.

That can't be real?

Good for Nintendo and the health of their gaming business.

At the same time, you'd think that this would provide them room to take more risks and re-invest those profits into building more, bigger and larger scope games.

As gamers, it's not enough for us to just cheer that our favourite gaming companies are making money. We should be looking at what they are doing with those record profits.

As it stands, I wouldn't say either of the big three are doing enough considering the money they're making now compared to previous gens.

Yes, games cost more to make, but you're also making infinitely more money now than in previous gens. So you should be greenlighting more games.

The thread is also full of positive comments too, so now we can't be happy a console manufacturer is doing well?, even more so after their previous console.

I'm glad to see a range of different types of games do well on Switch, and hope this persuades Nintendo to continue investing in different games and different franchises.

2020 was very poor from them output-wise but 2021 has been markedly better and there's already some nice stuff announced for 2022. Looking forward to seeing what they have in store at E3.

I'm mostly just talking about people that use this info for immature console wars. I do find being happy for maximum profits odd too, but it's not necessarily console wars.

I should call out specific people, sorry if it's a derail.

I never thought you were calling me out or anyone else, and I get it that sometimes these threads can get little childish at times, but the majority of comments are helpful imho.

Exactly. I never want to hear how expensive games are to make or how long they take to make. Their profits are better than ever. The Industry is stronger than ever. If its not crashing during a pandemic recession, its not crashing ever. Go all in.

The bottom line of what I've been saying in this thread is that "profits don't necessarily equate to better things for consumers, and often result in or come from the opposite." Which is why cheering them out of that context I find quite odd.

What's the ROI on making more big games compared to doing something else with that money? That's all these companies really care about beyond other strategic reasons to spend more money.

Will throwing more money on big risky projects increase their profits? How much compared to spending that same money doing something else?

In the end I have some great products available to me from NIntendo and Sony, but that's not because of profits, and they wont' necessarily get better because of them.

For me the switch is amazing in its concept first and foremost. I almost don't buy any Nintendo game actually, as I prefer indies and the occasional third partiy, but being able to play on a big screen or on the go has been a game changer.

Doesn't matter. Even when Nintendo advertises them (which they do for most of the 3rd party exclusives and they publish most of them as well) the base doesn't buy them. The only big sellers 3rd party wise are MH Rise, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (Uses Nintendo IP) and Among us.

Even though I don't own a switch, I'm happy to see the only pure gaming company on top.
Well, goes to show money can be made by gaming companies that don't need:

- The best specs
- Every game being AAA budget games
- The best third party games
- To promote to gamers PR with endless Twitter feeds and "Hey, we got a new studio and let's do a head office photo of all 500 people at the front doors"
- Games with the most realistic and uber RT effects
- A system with every app available in the dashboard
- The most robust online features
- To play 4k discs
- Big SSD or HDD storage
- Big discounts on games on a regular basis

Aside from Wii U and Virtual Boy which were bombs, Nintendo knows how to make $$$. Release a simple system with family fun games and people will buy it despite not being the latest tech, have the most games or even have the best bargain prices on games with digital sales.

Given their hardware/software pricing, it shows the typical Nintendo supporter would rather pay a low price for hardware and pay regular price for first party games, than pay a higher spec system knowing Sony/MS games get bargain binned fast.

When you built a new game with the Switch in mind, expect some big numbers, unlike late ports of multiplatform games. Also Starlink, Mario Rabbids, Minecraft, Just Dance, DQ XIS.

Ok so you're saying they just don't exist? Also DQXI had most of its sales on the PS4/3DS over 4M of the roughly 6M sales. MC is 2.2M. Mario & Rabbids did ~2M. I don't think Starlink hit 1M and I can't find sales for Just Dance.

Minecraft is definitely well above 10 million units on Switch, the number you mentioned above is only physical sales numbers in Japan.

Mario&Rabbids should be around 3.5M by now as it sold around 2M in 2018.

DQXIS was a late port and still managed to sold around 1M. Take a look at another late port like MHGU for example, it sold around 1.3M and the next entry released on the system managed to sell over 6M in 4 weeks. Exclusive mainline DQ on Switch is going to sell really well.

Just Dance Switch SKU is always charting on the US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, and etc top sellers list.

Momotaro Densetsu sold nearly 3M.

Project Octopath travelers sold like 2M units on Nintendo Switch alone.

I'm referring to DQ XI S version, not the original PS4 or 3DS. And all of those examples are ports or multi-platforms.

My original point still stands, build a game with Switch as a baseline, expect big numbers especially for the branded titles.

I do not know how that piece of shit of a game sold 32 million copies. That's WTF material.

Kinda crazy.

Having never played it, I won't comment on the game being shit or not, but it doesn't really seem to require or benefit from physical controls or $300 specialty hardware. It's incredibly bizarre so many people would buy expensive gaming hardware for the opportunity to spend an additional $60 on such a simple experience that would easily translate to their existing phone/tablet. Have the Chinese/Korean mobile shovelware farms not aped the design yet?

Yep! My favorite game this year is called It Takes Two, and its far from being this incredible powerhouse spec.

PS5 is the leader in dollar sales - Each PS5 costs between 400 and 500$, Switch is 300 or less

NPD Q1 2021 result
Unit sales
Nintendo Switch ~2M
PS5 ~1M

Dollar sales
PS5>Switch

I love these "profits don't matter" posts. MS has been in the red near constantly, Sony lost a huge chunk of their profits with the PS3. If either was in Nintendo's position (game maker only), they'd be toast. Just ask Sega.

well i mean the switch is the only handheld available, there is no other choice on the market and i doubt sony or microsoft will be trying either.

the only thing nintendo have to worry about is an incursion by Apple, ie an official apple controller adapter that turns an iphone into a handheld and they start bringing in actual games.

What is this even based on? Third party games have strong sales on Switch and that's why third party support is increasing. Even if we ignore indie titles, there were 14 third party games released at retail that sold over 1 million copies in the past 12 months.

Great now invest that fucking money in high tech Switch 2. Love the switch but damn is it lagging from a tech POV, the slow ass store also sucks and the online infrastructure is mediocre.
