DF: Genshin Impact: PS5 vs PS4 Pro - A 60FPS Upgrade Worth Waiting For?

Summary:
- After PS5 gets a native app version, Tom decide to check up.
- As mention, Genshin Impact runs using Unity Engine
- Before you launch the game, you can pick the PS4 BC version or the PS5 version.
- Comparison between PRO and PS5.
- Both PRO and PS5 runs at native 3840x2160p, aka 4K
- Looks like at the current patch, PRO gets a fair support, while in previous patch PRO runs the game at a lower resoltion
- Still, the previous PRO resolution are still higher than the actual 1080p from base PS4
- PS5 gets LOD, level of geometry detail boost, low pop texture/fast loading textures
- Some settings like shadow, texture res are the same as the PRO
- Perfomance comparsion
- PRO really have a hard time to sustain the 30 fps, vary between 27 and 29 at the open world
- While in dungeons, PRO runs at 30 fps, but still with some dips here and there
- PS5 runs at 60 with some dips between 57~60 while open worlds, but in fights with alpha effects and the main city, the game runs between 45~50
- Tom suggest at least an option to lock 30 and the native app perfomance still not fully at this best
- Dungeons runs far better at 60, but Tom say VRR would make things better
- Tom trieds video options inside the game, but without sucess.
- Disable v-sync gets a loads of screen tearing
- Now, comparison between the native PS5 and the BC mode
- Little to no differencial between perfomance on both modes
- Forcing to 1080p still not solve the isssue. Same perfomance
- Loading times at the other hand are far more better
- Comparion between PRO, BC mode and PS5
- On the PS5, the game loads just in 2 seconds (2:32 secs), the BC mode loads at 8 seconds (8:37 secs), while the PRO loads at 20:33 seconds
- Tom is curious about the Nintendo Switch version

Summary:

- Tom joins with John in this video
- The patch release after their last video
- 1.50 vs 1.51, PRO and PS5
- The games gets a really boost perfomance after 1.51
- Still some issues, but between 59~60 in cities like the main city.
- In heavy battle with alpha effects, particles, the game still drops between 54, but still ahead the 1.50
- Sometimes 49 on 1.50 vs 59~60 on 1.51
- Outdoors battles are demanding as Tom mention because they're dynamic, full day/night cycle, elemental reactions causes visual effects

I have messed around with this game for a couple of days on the PS5. I can't seem to get notifications to load. It freezes the game. I read on PC that VPN was causing it. I am not on a VPN.

I can see what some of the hype was about when it launched though. Seems to be a pretty decent gacha game.

Tom is blind, the characters have higher quality textures on their clothing and stuff.
Word.

I played it PS4, PS4 Pro, PS4 ver on PS5 and PS5 native. Never had anything like that, wow. We have a big community in here and I don't remember anyone mentioning it either.

1.51 that just came out with performance improvements.
Yeah, there was a quick fix released. Now feels much smoother. The biggest problem with GI on PS5 for me is a weird buzzing noise from a console when I'm playing it. The moment I go to a map screen, it stops. Bizarre. Same as with PS4 version played on PS5.

But the real killer feature is a loading times. There's no second opinion there. Loading is almost instant. Now you have your personal house/pocket dimension and can teleport there immediately. A real gamechanger for me, game doesn't feel like a mobile first game at all.

not good enough...they need DRS

I doubt Unity supports that? Overall, this a nice upgrade with the same fps issues that seem to have nothing to do with resolution as shown here by DF. More proves that Unity is a crappy engine that can't keep up with Unreal Engine.

The game itself is wonderful, it gives so much content than any EA AAA, Activision or other shitty publisher game for free.

This game wouldn't exist without Unity... because it's a mobile game. I know UE can be used for mobile, but it's not nearly as easy or well supported. There's a reason Unity dominates the mobile game market.

oh look, another Unity Engine game runs like absolute shit to the surprise of... no one...

BUT I think this is weird, as on my PC it runs at max settings (which means above PS5 settings) at a perfect 1440p60 (I am able to run it at around 4K60 as well). and I only have a Ryzen 2600 and a GTX1070, so way below PS5 specs in GPU and somewhat below it in the CPU department.

no they don't. this is not a GPU related issue. when my GTX1070 can run this at around 4K60 so can a PS5. Unity just sucks ass and the CPU isn't utilized correctly (as per standard with that engine)

The best thing is that the game now has a full trophy list including a platinum, rather than just the limited list it had before.

Also getting into the game and fast traveling is almost instant 👌

I have the game here, but nothing about platinum.
Just check the trophies on the PS5 when in game or via the app. I think all the PS4 ones are there plus additional (including the platinum)

Actually the PS5 version got ehancements that go above some of the PC settings.

- Compared to PC max settings, PS5 version has higher grass draw distance (PC version still has better draw distance for other objects that are far away).
- PS5 version has the highest res textures.
- They added volumetric clouds in a region of Liyue (Qingyun Peak) that for now is only present on the PS5 version of the game.

Game also got a patch a few days ago that improves the performance of the PS4 and PS5 version of the game. This video seems to be the pre patch build (not 100% sure) as the game its pretty smooth now on PS5. I can still notice some framedrops from time to time, but not as bad as shown in the video. It feels 60fps most of the time after the patch.

Talk about hyperbole. 1.51 quick fix fixed lots of fps problems on PS5 and game is pretty smooth rn.

the fact that this game can't hold 30fps at 1080p on a PS4 Pro is fucking ridiculous.

and I bet it still doesn't run remotely locked even after the new patch on PS5 lol

Too bad that they also added trophy for finishing 12 floors of Abyss.

Yes it's native 4k on the Pro, i don't know how he watched video, because Tom spent good chunk of it comparing PS5 and Pro versions, and pointing out differences beside resolution.
Tom (or someone else, 'cause his blind ass couldn't see the improved textures on the characters clothing) should re-do the testing since the last patch that improved performance came out days before this video.
Hoping VGTech will re-visit it.

Genshin Impact is gorgeous, it’s got shockingly high production values, the combat and exploration gameplay loop is extremely entertaining, and it’s systemically very dense as well. If you’ve never played Genshin Impact before, you should check it out – it’s free, after all, and it’s really good. But I would heavily encourage you to forego the PS4 version and check it on the PS5 to the extent possible (assuming you’re not trying one of the other versions, of course).

If you have already played this breakout hit before, you’ll be pleased to know that on PS5, in spite of some missed opportunities to address a lot of the game’s issues or to improve on it in several meaningful ways, the improvements that are brought to the table are just enough to make this the definitive way to play this game on console.
