Why do Nintendo fans crave remakes/ports/remasters all the time?

"A proud culture"...this thread. Holy shit 😂

So according to your "logic", when I said "I hope they port NMH1 and 2 before they release the third one," long ago I was engaging in a cultural practice?

I wasnt.... just wanting to play a game?
Believe it or not I'm not following your posts, I could barely take the first one seriously about this being a console war thread so why would I bother reading the rest?

My problem is the entire question at the thread title?
Why do Nintendo fans demand more ports than other fans?

Why is there an entire proud culture built around re-releases, port begging and remasters specifically in Nintrendo circles?

You saw the articles from nintendolife and other publications.
In Nintendo world you will see article like:
" WIIU games you'd like to see on Switch"
"Gamecube games you'd like to see ported over on Switch"

You constantly see stuff like this and you don't see half as much witrh the other consoles.

I'm a nostalgic Nintendo fan too and I love the older games but jeez don't you think it's too much sometimes?
I don't really care. People can want whatever they want express a desire for whatever they want and buy whatever they want. Who really cares, to be honest?

I want just as many PS5 ports as I do Switch ports. Pre-Ordered Mass Effect Legandary Edition today. Hoping for some Metal Gear news soon. Really hoping RDR2 and a few others will get PS5 versions. Most of my PS5 gaming time has just been games from the PS Plus Collection tbh.

The only thing for me would just be that I wish we had even more access to old games on new hardware but I have no idea how difficult that would be for devs.

The point isn't whether or not you follow my posts.

you didn't take seriously the first post in a thread you created? The idea was repeated a dozen+ times by many different posters. Did you ignore those too?

Maybe...just maybe the core thesis of your thread is wrong? It's already operates on a faulty premise

Sounds to me like there's a problem where people feel obligated to criticise game companies so they have to come up with something, anything, to present as critique.

When NMH1 was announced for Switch I immediately downloaded and then played that weekend. Then I bought the sequel which I had never played before.

If they announced Zelda OOT and MM tomorrow I would go in for those as I no longer have an N64 so whatever I will pay and play.

Some people make it sound like you are destroying gaming by wanting to play certain things and being willing to pay for it.

Well ok then I understand you a little more.

Look I'm not an asshole. I'm getting a little defensive here a little I'll admit.

I do want to jump on board with Nintendo again especially with their next console but I think it might be a WiiU again if they don't sort out their existing fans. This will certainly be my last thread about Nintendo for sure until perhaps a new system is annoucned and there is discussing to be had there.

The Way I seethe future is:

The Switch 2 will be backward compatible...so they won't be able to port Switch games... so they'll have to create new games..
I think they might know this so they're holding back on the current system.

I mean good lord they have to be right?

But I actually think there will be no Switch Pro... but a Switch 2, a sequel to the console despite the rumours.

They might just go 3rd Party, I don't know.

I don't really buy into the idea of "Nintendo Fans" as a collective. I would imagine that every single Xmas since the 90s Nintendo gets millions of new customers and they all want the same kind of things.

The failure of Wii U seems to have been down to poor marketing and weird unappealing hardware. The games seem pretty popular overall.

Whatever comes next will have Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Smash, Mario Kart etc and probably a load of PS4 era ports so that those games are available in handheld mode for anyone who wants it.

I'm fine with that and if I'm not feeling it when the time comes I won't bother.

What I would say is that a lot of modern gaming is a bit rubbish. Too much stuff that's just online multiplayer and stuff that wants to mimic the big TV shows and do the whole "blockbuster storytelling" thing. I'm not really into that so unfortunately if Switch 2 comes along with "how do you feel about Dark Souls 2 and Fallout New Vegas but it's portable this time" then I am probably all in.

A bit of a history about myself:
I'm what you might call a jaded Nintendo fan, bought the Switch and had 2 good years with it maybe 3. The last big game I bought for it was Animal Crossing New Horizons and will generally support Nintendo whenever I feel they put out a game with geniune effort put into it. I believe I also bought luigi's mansion 3 that year as well.
To clarify, I still think the Switch is a great system and on its own - exclusive software will still go down as a great system to me.

BUT

One thing that's really annoyed me lately about Nintendo fans though is the constant call for remakes and ports. It seems to have become really bad over the past 4 or so years. I don't see this with Xbox, Playstation or PC gamers at all. Or not nearly as much.

It isn't just reddit posts or fan posts either it's the Nintendo channels salivating over the idea that we could get a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD or we could have a remake of this or a port of this or that. I find it really embarassing.

I think Nintendo is going to have to change their strategy for their next console because chances are it will be backward compatible with the Switch and even if it wasn't, you cannot use the "give this game a second chance" argument because the Switch was a success unlike the WiiU.

My point is Nintendo fans should reasonably expect or demand new games but the fanbase is so beaten down over the years that a remake is better than nothing. I hope this changes in the coming years because it's getting difficult to be interested in Nintendo news these days.

Anyone else feel the same?
As someone who hasn't owned a Nintendo home console (minus ds/3ds as had those) since the snes, I am one of the people who looks forward to ports. I never got to play any of the older games. I had the wii for 2 weeks in 2008 but sold it for ps3 as mgs4/gta4 was more my style(the wii was bought after playing drunk at a friend's house).

I was thrilled to get hyrule warriors, the 3d mario collection, mario 3d world, and really want to try metroid prime collection. Would love a old fire emblem collection.

That being said I also really like the ports and remakes of 3rd party games. Trials of mana, civ6, Xcom2, borderlands, red faction, kingdom of amalur rereckoning. Plus games like monster hunter rise.

Honestly outside of mario, Zelda and fire emblem I don't play many 1st party switch exclusives (no interest in splattoon, picman, Mario cart, smash, animal crossing, etc.)
I'd give them a chance I'd theyd go on sale. I can buy a ps4 game 6 months later for half price, but Nintendo is greedy with most of their games. So be it, if I'm already on the fence it's a no buy. Of course 3d mario, Zelda and any fire emblem/advanced wars has me on day 1.

I own over 80 games on my switch. 25 physical carts the rest on digital my 400gb sd card is jam packed with tons of indies, ports, mostly from eshop sales (they have no problem with sales on 3rd party games.)

Nope I'm pretty sure I responded to one of the posters on this.

Basically the gist of the previous post I made was:

PS4 and Xbox ( Mainly Ps4 I guess) I feel balances out these remasters with new games so it doesn't feel like it's 50/50 remasters and new games like it does on Switch.
PS5 ( As SOOOOOOOO many posters pointed out to me) has demons' Souls remake which apprently is a big gotcha for my argument.... ok. PS5 launch lineup was poor, I don't have a Ps5 so I can't comment too much on any experience of it. Mario Kart 8 deluxe launched with the Switch and I also had no issue with this. It is a new console after all.

But 3-4 years into a console and they're gonna release Skyward Switch HD? GROAN.

You also shat on my google search with was a little immature I'll admit but I'm trying to show you that even at a glance, finding even professional journalistic discussions on what ports you're excited for in 2021 is FAR more common for a Nintendo point of view than the rest.

In the
Fixed that for ya. Because let’s be real, demon souls remake, halo anniversary (and master chief collection and Halo community constantly hammering 343i to add reach to the game), REmake 1-3, endless ports of RE4, MGS, GTA5, modern warfare 1-2, skyrim SE, endless bloodborne remake requests, dark souls remastered, TLoU:R, crash and Spyro remakes, handsome jack collection (BL1-TPS), Gears Anniversary, GoW3 remastered, fable anniversary, ratchet and clank remake, etc. the list goes on.

Updating/remastering/remaking an older port to an established series has been the go-to cash grab for many devs for a long time now.

hell, the reason why I bought a PS5 was for a remake

Dear GOD, ghrow up. Overlooking Microsoft is hardly making any remasters these days (let's bring up a 2014/5 games LOL) it's current model also allows users to upgrade their old game 360, One and even OG games Xbox for free. In stark contrast to what Nintendo does. I guess you got your money old ready for the Zelda Skyward Sword remaster?

At the end of the day I think this whole conversation is much more about accessibility than anything else.

This. Wii virtual console. Burnt to the ground.

Wii U VC. Burnt to the ground.

Switch store - inevitably burnt to the ground years from now.

They like to start from scratch, for some unknown reason. Hence the need for remakes.

Mario oddyssey
Zelda botw
Bowsers fury.

Rest is basically repackaged shit.
If the only Nintendo-published games you like are Mario platformers and Zelda then yes that would be the list.

This is an industry issue, not a Nintendo issue. There’s a staggering amount of “definitive“ editions of games on both PlayStation and Xbox. This wouldnt even be an issue of backwards comparability was standard.

Nintendo's remasters are also pretty low effort. Most of them are straight up ports. Its disappointing as a Nintendo fan.

I agree, skyward sword was so behind the times with regard QOL stuff and hand holding when it was released, yet I imagine the new release will not change any of that.

I think that game could be improved tenfold just by removing a lot of the needless pressing A through dialogue for the same thing for the fucking umpteenth time.

Because 3D visuals have come a long way since the N64 and because since 2006 Nintendo have been a generation behind in terms of hardware power so the games have aged even more.

Nintendo owe it to their big titles to remake them. The likes of Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Metroid Prime should be available on their latest hardware and not look completely outdated. They would also sell 10+ million copies of M64 and OoT Remakes if done properly so it’s easy money.

This is exactly my problem.

They're low effort and fans eat it up and want more ports..

The only ports they've put effort into are Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Not so sure about that assessment. N64 hasn't aged well and most carts have dead batteries but PSX, PS2, Sega Saturn are all just as good now as they were then. I retro game probably 75% of the time and it's not for clout, it's cause classics are classics for a reason.

OT though, Nintendo diehards generally eat up whatever Nintendo throws them. I don't get it myself but it is what it is. I lost my nostalgia for Nintendo during the Wii years. They are still able to make a great game but as a company overall, Nintendo treats their fans like dirt and does the bare minimum when they're successful. Struggling Nintendo is the best Nintendo.

PSX also aged like milk left out in the sun.

They might just go 3rd Party, I don't know.

MS is more likely to go 3rd party. They aren't nearly as vertically oriented as Nintendo.

Jesus what a terrible take. It’s ok to say they have a drought now but you can’t call Astral Chain, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem 3H, Age of Calamity, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 « repackaged shit ». Nothing comes close to that amount of first party in the first three years of a console.

OP missed the entire start of the PS5 and Xbox Series Gen? Look around and you will see almost everyday a port or remaster is announced!
Era might know. There's at least 2 threads a day with someone sucking off nintendo over there.
I really would like to know why Era came up in your post when thread isn’t about Era. That website is really living rent free your heads, and you call them mental...it’s been very jarring to watch these past few months the obsession with that place...
Imagine buying a car or a house, and then, 10 years later, buying the exact same car or house at the exact same price.
This take is...something else. Reads like someone’s brain that doesn’t know how to do a proper comparison. Comparing entire life changes to video games, goddamn. Hopefully you don’t believe what you write.

Nintendo doesn't enjoy making them though. When I played Link Between Worlds on 3DS I assumed, as any human would, that they'd remake Link to the past on the same engine. It was supposed to happen, right? In any case, it is important that it be remade some day so I can claim to have finished it even though I dislike the original too much to finish it. I just need to be able to say that I finished "Link to the past" and then I'm set on gamer cred.

Because those who buy Nintendo consoles are in the 1% wealthiest on the planet and buying the same title over and over again make us peasants seem less worthy.

This answer reads like someone's brain that is desperate to be right. I could have made other comparisons. Who buys the same toy twice for his kid ?

Paying the full price again to have the exact same experience... Preferring that a company invests money in doing the exact same thing again, instead of making something new...

Either people are dumb, or they are afraid of change.

playstation gamers beg for remakes of ps1 games, xbox begs for remakes of rare ip or exclusives period, pc begs for every exclusive from consoles, and nintendo begs for everything from Nintendo on their platform to come to the newest Nintendo console.

I think this is a rather overall problem in a lot of media/games today. For better or worse we have the 19th installment of Call of Duty, Battlefield 6, the 6th Transformers movie installment, countless Zelda games, Dynasty Warriors 9, etc. I'm generally okay with continuous sequels to powerful and popular IPs, especially if they stay refreshing. However, I stand against it, if it means most original IPs and ideas for new games suffer or an IP grows extremely stale

All this being said, Nintendo is an older company, and they have quite a few games on the top 10 list for sequels.

  1. Mario – 119 games
  2. Mega Man – 103 games
  3. Sonic – 80 games
  4. Final Fantasy – 80 games
  5. Pokemon – 59 games
  6. Dragon Quest – 43 games
  7. Castlevania – 35 games
  8. Resident Evil – 32 games
  9. Donkey Kong – 32 games
  10. The Legend of Zelda – 30 games
But I would be just as guilty for loving these endless sequels. I've bought most Zelda games, most Mechwarrior games, most Age of Empires games, etc. If a company keeps bringing quality to the table, I don't mind seeing sequels continue.

Balance is key.

Depends on the game that gets ported, i can understand nintendo remaking the wii u games such as mario bros and pikmin 3 because of the lack of support from the wii u, mario 3d collection everyone brought it to literally play super mario sunshine, personally i wish they remade games like starfox 64 and f zero 64 or gx as theres literally no sign of nintendo doing anything with those games/series, also im a scub and an addict for zelda games, no gane out there is as good as that series and when they try they all fail

Because Nintendo Switch has very few games other than Nintendo's and they have to justify it being their primary consoles.

They don't really care about the games themselves, otherwise they would have enjoyed games like Doom and TW3 on much better platforms for a fraction of the price, they just want to coonsom nintendo branded products and get excited for the next one.

They bought into the "gaming lifestyle" more than the games themselves, that's their appeal.

People with extremely poor personalities tend to identify themselves with things they buy/like just to have a little bit of personality

Normal Nintendo Fans or Nintendo Switch owners just care about the games and buy remasters only if it makes sense to have them.

Its honestly infuriating. I some times head over to the nintendo forums and reddits and it feels like they keep talking about how bad they want a re release/make of old games. How about something new? You know what would be better than a re release of the metroid prime trilogy or a remake of metroid 2? How about a new fucking metroid game. You know what would be better than a re release of super mario 3d world, a new mario game in that style? It feels like my generation just clings on to the fucking past like there is no tomorrow. Monolithsoft could announced xenoblade 3 and many idiot zoomers and millenils would be like “BuT wHeRE Is X pOrT fOr SwItCh?!?!? ReEeEEeE!!!!”

This is so true holy shit. On era, some guy once made a thread about how “the switch version of the witcher 3 looked better” to him. These people will grasp at any straw they can so long as it helps to prop up the brands they like

LOL. Talk about over thinking things.

It's rare you see a take as self-assured as it is bad.

Maybe people just have preferences and ports or remakes are what some people want while other want new games.

Nobody can really be "wrong" when it comes to consumer behaviour for entertainment products and spouting this kind of "wisdom" is just a bit sad.

Imagine buying a car or a house, and then, 10 years later, buying the exact same car or house at the exact same price.
Another dumb take.

For most people a car or house is a pretty significant purchase.

What is the cost of the average Nintendo game? Compared to the average house?

$60 today for a game I played a decade ago isn't a huge deal. Less hassle than trying to find old consoles and set them up etc.

Also there is no obligation to buy any game so it's entirely up to the customer, I would say.

You'd have to imagine also that a lot of Nintendos software sales are coming from new customers who weren't around to play some of those older games.

Even someone who was 18 when 3D all stars released would have been 5 years old when the most recent game, Galaxy, from the collection was released.

Maybe its an issue of perspective. I wouldn't think of a video game as any kind of major purchases. For most games I will buy, complete and never play again.

Its more of a consumable item than a permanent life changing purchase.

Weird comparison.
