DF: Returnal: Housemarque Pushes PlayStation 5 HARD - With Spectacular Results

It's a small team, and it is tailor made for the type of game they want to make - a fast, twitching, arcade game. Returnal looks great, certainly better than the vast majority of the games on the market, and certainly next-gen. But it is a vastly different game than what a team of 300 people whose focus is on Action/Adventure/Storytelling would make.

Yeah, which is why I said I made the concession to the size/inexperience of the studio.

I think the game looks great, too, but I'm just not convinced it looks good enough to explain being only 1080p. The particles are obviously very impressive, and the lighting looks nice. Otoh, I think the environments are pretty basic, certainly no more complex than good stuff from last gen. Maybe my expectations are excessive, but personally I was expecting more from this gen that 2x the frame rate and lots of fancy particles.

My honest opinion is that in non-covid times, and with a more experienced team, you'd expect these consoles to do more like 1440p60 at this fidelity.

But I guess time will tell.

The particles effects and the combat look amazing. The rest is average. It being 1080p is disappointing as well. The TAA upscaling and checkerboarding will always cause image quality issues when used.

It's not 1080p though. You're misunderstanding the techniques being employed

Doesn't Minecraft runs at 1080p with full raytracing on series X?

Watch the DF video

I have. They mention a base res of 1080p and then 2 reconstructions to 4k, which they think is much less than ideal.

I'm not really getting what you're driving at.

Are you implying that I think that the final image is equivalent to 1080p? Because I don't, at all. Or is it that you don't think the base being 1080p necessarily means that the underlying performance of the game is ROUGHLY equivalent to 1080p60 (ie what the game would render in a parallel universe where reconstruction techniques don't exist)?

Because that's my understanding, and that's what I don't think is very impressive.

It's 1440P CP up to 4K with some base assets that are 1080p

The game looks sharp and fluid, so the fact that certain aspects aren't 100% 4K isn't really an issue

I don't disagree actually. I do not consider native all that important. I am just surprised that one of the first exclusives, heavily marketed as 4K 60fps (which I found impressive) is actually upscaling from 1080p.
Of course the end result is still mostly good, so in practice it is not a huge issue. But I do not find this game to look particularly great - Infamous SS from 2014 doesn't really look that much worse to me, if at all.

Maybe I'm missing something but isn't this game well know to be procedurally generated?
A procedurally generated game looking better than a AAA exclusive seems pretty great to me. Having randomized layouts takes away the option to use a ton of tricks devs use to increase graphical quality.

.

don’t forget the medium
Does MS or Bloober Team promote Minecraft and Medium as 4k/60 games?

Sony does for Returnal. 4k and a "consistent 60 fps". I did an image snapshot in case they change it like they changed Demon's Souls on their site deleting Ray Tracing from its description a month before launch.

Outstanding performance

Placing gameplay at the forefront of all it does, Housemarque maintains the highest standards for performance. Thanks to the incredible power of PS5, the blistering combat and brooding visuals of Returnal’s unique world are delivered at a consistent 60 frames-per-second and a 4K resolution.

Jesus christ i thought we understood this when we got last gen mid upgrades

4K with an * applies to both of them. Its dumb as hell whining about a non native 4K at this point

Native 4k is a stupid waste of resources anyway. Does the game look good? Yes I think it does. That’s good enough for me, don’t really care what they do to get there, aside from a purely academic curiosity.

Why don't you actually listen instead of jumping straight into a thread to shitpost?

I did listen. I listened to DeBits, VFXVeteran, and DF and come to find out the "raytracing" they're doing has fuck all to do with what we expect since 2018 when a game thats advertised to use rayyracing is doing be that reflections, lighting, shadows, or AO. Saying "well it uses raytracing to improve the performance of their raster tech" is a joke if you're going to advertise it to gain some cool points.

Many players have been eager to see more of the game in action and thanks to the awesome folks at Bloober Team we proudly get to showcase a small slice of it. Here are 14 minutes of new 4K gameplay from the Medium.

That's still raytracing you fucking idiot

Dynamic res in a patch later on and/or a fidelity mode would be cool. The performance surely swings. Cutscene and first person scenes have a higher res, you can tel when it switches to in game. I feel like early footage was 30fps, so it might have moved to 60fps later in development. Looks good on a 4k display regardless, so who knows. I enjoy obsessing over le graphics. Viva PS5!

Returnal still utilizes ray tracing just not every possible aspect. Big deal. That's what it's going to be like this console generation. These machines are lucky to be able to do it at all. That's okay since it still looks great despite not utilizing the full sweep of ray tracing possibilities. Also keep in mind developers are a resourceful bunch and will surely surprise us with custom engines built from the ground up to utilize ray tracing this gen (looking at you Naughty Dog).

The game looks and runs great. Full stop. I swear people look at a $1200 Nvidia card that has custom ray tracing hardware and special upscaling A.I. that makes all that playable to begin with and compare it to an all-in-one $500 console. Returnal is just a small taste. We're all gonna be blown away when Sony/Microsoft start showing off stuff that digs deep into these machines. Every generation has games that make us think how did they pull this off on that console. Take your chill pills people.

So it uses raytracing, but not in any visual or noticeable way... We've known this before hand. Several people confirmed this, VFX, NX, etc. Let's not split hairs guys. The game still looks good, definitely not the best looking, but it has its marks. But the gameplay looks like it would be entertaining for a full playthrough. I'd love to see the game on PC to give it a try, but we'll see what Jim Ryan does. Hopefully he continues to please us PC guys.

Listen to this, Returnal dev basically confirmed they are using ray tracing for audio and custom GI.

4K they said wow! In all actuality....

~900p/30 XSX
1080p NO RAY TRACING below 60fps 3080.

Does the game support HDR? I haven’t seen anyone comment on this.

Edit: Apparently it does not support HDR. That is a simply astonishing decision in my eyes.
