Why do Nintendo fans crave remakes/ports/remasters all the time?

Simple, cows love being milked.

...this isn't really a thing unique to Ninty. Many gamers in general seem to love remakes/remasters, otherwise they wouldn't be dropping so frequently across the board.

Imagine being embarrassed by what others post on the internet all because you have a common interest in the success of a product and its continued support with new entertainment.

OP, as others have pointed out it's not really limited to Nintendo, and furthermore I can find plenty of Nintendo-centered conversations full of moaning over bespoke ports and remasters being most of what Nintendo is releasing (or re-releasing as it may). I think you need to step back from the interwebz and realize that most Nintendo fans aren't posting on these websites -- we make up a very small portion of who buys Nintendo products. Leave it to the more seasoned and die hard fans to clamor for titles with high nostalgic value -- now does it make more sense to you and you can feel a little bit less embarrassed?

Frankly, if you see me hoping for certain remakes, it's more for the business value and it's probably things like 3DS games that I always thought should have been for Wii U and not the dumb handheld.

Secondly, they should be pumping this thing full of ports and remasters because they take almost no thought and there's no, simply no, excuse for Retro Studios to so far be absent from Nintendo Switch. They stand to make so much money on this platform that it's simply goofy that they've had any drought at all in the release schedule. Port-pumping is the easy dough while they work out the road blocks on their new stuff...

Playing classic console games, but now on a portable system is a huge benefit of the Switch.
Yeah people complain about ports of old games, but having the Resident Evil series in portable form for the first time is a wonder. And some that weren't on a Nintendo system before, they see it as an insult or whatever

Nintendo's key franchises are:

Mario - platformer
Zelda - action RPG
Mario Kart - racing
Metroid - shooter
Smash Bro - fighting
Pokemon - collectible game

They actually cover a wide range of genres.

The reaosn why they rehash the same games is because they sell a ton and they skew to a family friendly image. Even if the dev team wants to branch out and make a Destiny or COD or GT/Forza racer they cant since it goes against the image. An image where probably half the first party games have Mario on the cover too.

To be honest, after seeing tetris99 battle royale, I thought they'd do something similar but with Wii Play Tanks.

Some years later, spending my days bored, I decided to create the remake I wanted, it's called https://tankroyale.io

That's what you get when you don't deliver, Nintendo!

It is mostly just Nintendo.
Yes Sony and Microsoft do this as well but their fans often don't treat it as the next coming of christ when it gets announced.

Have you ever seen a port of a Ps3 game appear on PS4 and get any attention from fans?
Well first of all the concept of releasing a game from the previous generation completely unchanged for new hardware is exclusively a Nintendo thing but even if someone on Playstation did it... they'd be laughed out of it.

Also on GTA V: Was there any fans asking for this? I'm sure there was but nothing compared to:
"Metroid Prime Trilogy"
or
"Remake Zelda Oracle of seasons/ages"
or
"Remake Ocarina of time"

Also GTAV will be a free update as far as I'm aware, something Nintendo doesn't know the meaning of.
Bro PS3 fans where drooling over a trailer of FF7 for 10 years and then it became one of PS4s biggest sellers last year.

The Switch is Nintendo's second highest selling home console and the first highest selling, the Wii, had an audience that in all likelihood didn't give a shit about classic games. This means most Switch owners have never played these titles before, so they're basically new to them.

Well then, maybe it’s because none of their games stand the test of time from a design standpoint?

This is like asking “Why do people want a good 4K UHDBR version of The Lord of the Rings? After all, nobody is asking for a 4K UHDBR of the comedy that was the summer sensation of 5 years ago that nobody seems to want to rewatch.”

Hard to go back to N64 OoT. On 3DS it's lovely. Technically it was outdated the day it released but the enhanced graphics are cute and the framerate far more playable so, I know I'll be emulating that for decades if it's never again remade, but never go back to the N64 (or its 1:1 ports). But once again, the OP lumps together remasters and ports too, both of which won't age worse than the original (unless the remaster somehow botched some aspect of course, but usually they don't, they just increase resolution and maybe fix up some textures etc., remakes are more prone to problems).
The 3DS one is an enhanced port, not a remake. It was done very well. I find myself preferring the Gamecube Version since it's what I grew up on and it's 480p.

Sometimes it's nice to revisit a favorite game with a new lick of paint--it's like watching an extended edition/director's cut or reading a nice print of a favorite book with new artwork or something. *shrug* Plus, their development costs a fraction of the resources that a new mainline game would. Many are even farmed out to studios that specialize in ports, so it's not like it's an either/or situation between new games and remakes. What's not to like?

I do think you've let your jaded fan status color your perception a little bit too much if you honestly believe it's only or even mostly Nintendo fans that do this. Look at all the fanfare (and the years of begging) leading up to the Demons Souls remaster. Or recall the drooling over the Crash and Spyro remakes. It's everywhere.

What OP says is true, gamers are on the phones now with Nintendo begging for remasters, personally I’d take new games.

A bit of a history about myself:
I'm what you might call a jaded Nintendo fan, bought the Switch and had 2 good years with it maybe 3. The last big game I bought for it was Animal Crossing New Horizons and will generally support Nintendo whenever I feel they put out a game with geniune effort put into it. I believe I also bought luigi's mansion 3 that year as well.
To clarify, I still think the Switch is a great system and on its own - exclusive software will still go down as a great system to me.

BUT

One thing that's really annoyed me lately about Nintendo fans though is the constant call for remakes and ports. It seems to have become really bad over the past 4 or so years. I don't see this with Xbox, Playstation or PC gamers at all. Or not nearly as much.

It isn't just reddit posts or fan posts either it's the Nintendo channels salivating over the idea that we could get a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD or we could have a remake of this or a port of this or that. I find it really embarassing.

I think Nintendo is going to have to change their strategy for their next console because chances are it will be backward compatible with the Switch and even if it wasn't, you cannot use the "give this game a second chance" argument because the Switch was a success unlike the WiiU.

My point is Nintendo fans should reasonably expect or demand new games but the fanbase is so beaten down over the years that a remake is better than nothing. I hope this changes in the coming years because it's getting difficult to be interested in Nintendo news these days.

Anyone else feel the same?
PS5 launched with a glorified port/remake. It's all the craze these days. Publishers love it because the risk is super low for established successful games

I think that in general, the majority of Nintendo produced and published titles are usually of high quality, and their style doesn't really get old regardless of a remake every decade or so. It just kinda works, for Nintendo.

Nintendo made some great games while making visuals a secondary priority. Remakes allow already great games to inject the benefit of improved visuals possible by current hardware. Nintendo primarily designed in this direction which is why it makes sense Nintendo fans are the ones clamoring for the update.

The Microsoft/Sony equivalent would be to request a fix for a game with great visuals but terrible controls.

absolutely no idea why I would want a superior version of my favorite game made even better.

Well keep buying games you already owned once then ;)

Let me say this,
Nintendo does create sequels a lot to existing franchise and I have no issues with that at all anymore. At least it's a new game, new story, new concept whatever.
I actually used to give out about them not creating more new IPs like they did in the N64 or Snes times but boy has the bar been LOWERED.

I had no idea they would end up actually releasing the SAME games again and again on mainline consoles.
Even the Wii with all it's complaints of Shovelware didn't have THAT many Gamecube ports. Probably about 4 or 5 and they were budget releases.

When you get a game like 'Link's awakening: Remake' where I mean really? - You could have just made a brand new 2D Zelda game with those graphics. But instead they basically rereleased an old Gameboy game, updated the graphics and added nothing extra and arguably in some places made it worse and slapped a full price on it. The game is still only like 8 hours long which is not good value.
The sad thing is this is about the most effort they put into these remakes these days.
I'm actually glad they have almost run out of WiiU games to port over to the Switch. They've nearly done them all!!

Guys Nintendo is selling a lot of Switches and making a LOT of money. They shoudl have the ability to give you a Breath of the Wild/Mario Odyseey level game at least once a year. No excuses.

I did, and much of the Switch's library is redundant as a result.

people want an easy way to play games on modern hardware instead of having to have old hardware around all the time.

Nintendo games are good games, they aren't good "for their time" like one would describe many games from other publishers, usually Nintendo games are extremely timeless and simply work no matter how old they are. there are exceptions to this of course but not many.

the issue really is the price of them not the fact they are wanted or exist.

I mean in regards to the Wii having many ports from the previous console.
Remember the Wii was very similarly powered to the Gamecube and the Gamecube was considered a console not many people owned like the WiiU but yet they resisted the temptation to rerelease every single Gamecube game.

They made a NEW Mario Kart
A New Zelda (Eventually)
A New Metroid
etc

I know they released Metroid Prime Trilogy and games like Pikmin 2 and Mario Power Tennis but they were budget games and very obviously advertised as such.

They are conditioned to play the same games for over 30 years.

Yeah man l, can't tell the difference between any of the Mario and Zelda games!

They're all exactly the same!

The other day I was playing Zelda 2 by accident and thought I was playing BOTW.

This is not just Nintendo fans at all. Weren't Sony the ones who really popularized this trend anyway?

I've got no real problem with remasters. Great games deserve to be played again, or by new audiences.

Loving the shit out of the Shadow Man Remaster right now.

I'm seeing this response a lot in this thread.
I'd have very little problem with this answer if they were released as budget games or in a collection of games.

And I know what people are gonna say back to this:
"but Mcjmetroid why would they sell them for less if they keep selling full price?"
Well that's where my issue with Nintendo fans comes from.
The truth of course to this is: People tolerate it and Nintendo are a business and it's a smart business move but let's not pretend Nintendo are doing this for those poor fans that missed these games on the WiiU
They are released to fill release schedules. In the Switch's case schockingly bad release schedules considering how successful the console has been selling.

Another issue I have is: I have always felt like Nintendo tries to make these WiiU games feel like they were new releases. Sometimes you'll get the word "Deluxe". That's about it.This is how they did it on the Wii.
new-play-control-pikmin-2-cover.cover_large.jpg

I mean looking at this box it's very obvious what this is.. It's an older game enchanced and again budget priced.

Let's also not forget that on the Wii and WiiU you were able to buy a lot of older games digitally but Nintendo decided to get rid of that feature.. I wonder why.

I wonder what the strategy is for the Switch 2 because the well has run dry of WiiU titles to port over. It would be hilarious if they started rereleasing Switch 1 games again though.

I'm not going to feel bad for wanting more original games..

Games like Tropical Freeze for the Switch were done by Retro Studies themselves when they could have been working on a new Metroid prime game earlier or something else.
The 3D Mario collection was also Nintendo themselves.

So no:
I don't buy the seperate studies argument.
Could they be seperate department within the company? Ya probably.

That's the difference between SD development and HD development. Ports and remasters are a lot more attractive to publishers now that games take longer to make.

Just don't buy the ports and buy the new first party and third party games instead.

I only want 2 things from Nintendo:

- A return to high-end consoles
- Online store that allows me to download NES,SNES,N64,Gamecube,Wii and WiiU games

Basically all I want from Nintendo is a HIGH-END console that is backwards compatible with EVERYTHING prior.

One reason they might not have owned the system the game was on. I never owned a Wii and a Wii U but i own a Switch. So i missed a lot the Wii U games, so the ports gives me a chance to play them without having to go out and buy the older system. Some people might have sold the older system to buy the new one so they miss the older games. Some may want remasters of old games with updates, like how they want remasters of other games. So it is not just not Nintendo, People like the familiar. I mean if Nintendo didn't release some of the character games, then people would be asking for them. Look how many people want an F Zero or Metroid game. I myself I am happy with the switch and have bought enjoyed many games many on GAF calls port. They were new to me.

It didn't flop. It did alright. Would have done much better now because it was released right before the explosion of social media and Nintendo's partnerships with youtubers for promotion. It did have a resurgence in sale because of this and because the most popular 'let's play' channel on youtube did a playthrough (chuggaaconroy). But it deserves so much more than to rot on that outdated screen for all eternity.
