Where do you find the numbers used for this calculation ?
I did the calculations myself.

PS4 $299
PS5 30% $399 + 70% $499

If the 30% is smaller then it is even more than 341%.

BTW you have the units here:

unknown.png

Q4 2020 = 1.4m x $299 = $418.6m
Q4 2021 = 1.0m x $299 + 0.99m x $399 + 2.31m x $499 = $1846.7m

$1846.7m / $418.6m = 441% = 341% increase

DE > 30% (not likely) = less than 341%
DE < 30% (very likely) = more than 341%

PS. And about promotion and deals... well PS5 is basically being sold at full price and PS4 get very little promo/deals... I don't believe it will make that much difference for Q4 (there is not Black Friday or something like)... the changes to have PS4 promo/deals are bigger than PS5 that will make the % bigger than 341%.

Edit - Fixed the %.

It is still not available. Scalpers selling it for 1000usd.
I got mine on release date and it was delivered in January. Love it. Pulse 3d was as hard to get :p

The fact that they never release ps5 software numbers while bragging about everything else is a big tell.
I don’t know what those numbers would tell, it’s not like there is a game that all PS5 owners will play. I’m not sure even Sony could know how many consoles are active, there are those who never go online even for system updates.

So firstly, your comparison with the xbox number is not really fair, simply because if I remember well the hardware numbers from Microsoft include the Xbox accessories which will impact these numbers (by how much, I don't know), not the console harware alone.
Secondly, I think you calculation is wrong, 1846.7/418.6 = 4.41, so the playstation console hardware revenue up 341%, not 441 % :messenger_winking:

It is 441%.

1200 is 4x (400%) 400.
1600 is 5x (500%) 400.

1846.7 is 541% of 418.6 or a increase of 441%.

I don’t know what MS put into Xbox hardware revenue I just tried to use the same weird logic.

No, you're wrong:

1200 is 3x 400, that's 300% of 400, so a 200% increase of 400
1600 is 4x 400, that's 400% of 400, so a 300% increase of 400

1846.7 = 4.41 * 418.6, so 1846.7 is 441% of 418.6, that's a 341% increase of 418.6.

The fact PS5 almost double that % from a higher last year base (PS4 sold way more than Xbox One in that quarter last year) is impressive.

I think these graphs are the main comparision we have to compare MS and Sony. Sony made this quarter $4,189M from what MS calls "content and services" and $2,049M from "hardware". Sony made much more money on both areas.

Is there any way we or Sony could know if these consoles are in the hands of gamers or in big piles at scalper groups?
No trolling. Just frustration to see record sales numbers without once having seen the console IRL.

It's pretty unlikely the scalpers are sitting on a pile of units, and it's more likely they're in the hands on players. The demand just far exceeds the supply, perhaps more so than ever before, partly due to the pandemic and people wanting more to do when they're sitting in their homes.

Anecdotally, here in Finland you can preorder consoles from retailers far before their launches. I preordered PS4 right after E3 2013, and got it at launch. This time I preordered PS5 in February 2020, and got it at launch as well, but I read that some people here had preordered theirs in March/April 2020, and got it in February 2021. It's still not available in stores. Some of the stores arrange raffles for buyers when they get more of them, which works against scalpers.
