PlayStation 5 shipments reach 7.8 Million units as of March 31st, fastest selling console launch aligned Worldwide (PS4 was 7.6M at the same time)

I think both underestimated the market. They could've gotten away with $600 console and slightly higher specs. The prices of smartphones have change our spending behavior, I guess.
Yup fully agreed there, plus they could’ve delayed the launch, there is currently extremely little problem not having these consoles to be honest. Sony was more ready than Microsoft for sure but both are behind on software.

Do you know what Xbox's increase was year over year in hardware?
Yes. These were the claims yesterday.

1. Xbox hardware revenue up 232%
2. Gaming revenue up 50%, Xbox content + services up 34%

The fact PS5 almost double that % from a higher last year base (PS4 sold way more than Xbox One in that quarter last year) is impressive.

By the time the casuals are interested in upgrading I suspect the Series X will be cheaper anyway, unless Microsoft want to keep the price artificially high in order to maximise margins.

I'm also uncertain as to whether casuals would be happy with a digital only console. The more casual gamers I know tend to buy physical games and will lend games to one another.
I read somewhere a while ago that MS didn't expect to be able to reduce the cost of making the Series X (due to silicon/memory cost etc) like they could with previous gens, it would be a long time before they could hit a price point for the casual gamer which is why they went for the Series S as well. Anyway is was something along those lines. can't remember where I read it, might have been the digital foundry series s reveal/interview.

2020 has been a disaster for PS4

I guess Sony doesn't care about having higher numbers there and is moving all its efforts to PS5
I said in the previous thread Sony is not making the same mistake they did with PS2 to PS3.
A price cut on PS4 should be big error.

The focus should be the new machine.

The lack of chips issue and (gaming history record) PS5 launch affected PS4 sales, but isn't a disaster if we look at the bigger picture:

At the end of March, PS4 is only 2.5M million consoles away of being the best selling console ever in gaming history, having only PS2 above it. PS4 also broke the PS2 record and became the console that sold more games in gaming history, and on top of that also generates a ton of money via services (PS Plus, Now, etc).

As Jim Ryan said in the 'we believe in generations interview', Sony has over 100M active users on PS4, who are buying games and services at gaming history record levels. Even if they continue selling PS5 at gaming history record levels during the next couple of years, only a small portion of the PS4 will have migrated to PS5. This is why Sony will continue supporting PS4 for at least the next couple of years.

I said in the previous thread Sony is not making the same mistake they did with PS2 to PS3.

More PS4 sold would mean more revenue and profit coming from consoles, games and services sold. Price cut won't be coming because they can't produce more consoles, but if possible I'd bet they'd do it. As I said above, they said they will continue supporting the console for at least a couple of years more.

Is there any way we or Sony could know if these consoles are in the hands of gamers or in big piles at scalper groups?
No trolling. Just frustration to see record sales numbers without once having seen the console IRL.

PlayStation is Sony’s trading card that’s the difference between them and Microsoft. Part of the debate is does Microsoft have the CONSOLE experience, are they straight console shooters, pure console makers? The fact that they’re a computer company first keeps the debate alive.

Is there a debate about that?
Sony does a ton of other things. And Microsoft is obviously all over the place with Xbox being just a small part of their business. MS has been shifting their gaming focus toward Gamepass too, it’s on Xbox, old and new, PC and mobile phones through xcloud. And on PC they’re on Steam now as well. So people need to stop staring at how they’re doing in the console business, it’s important but they would still do fine even if they didn’t sell one more Xbox.

I have the console... we can make a live to show you it :)

Kidding.

Scalpers only exists to profit... if they are buying consoles it is because they are selling really fast them.... when it start to not sell them they will stop to buy more.

So there is no pile of consoles with scalpers except when they receive them to take a pic... after that they already send to the consoles they sold it... they probably sold them before receive.

Well I’ve seen scalpers having 10+ consoles for sale at least, but I guess I can’t say how long they actually hold them. It’s incredibly frustrating anyway. Especially when interesting games start to arrive. Returnal is my type of game. I guess I’ll get it cheap at least, hopefully the story is unimportant because I definitely won’t be able to keep myself unspoiled until next year.

"How do console launches work?"

If you are complaining there are only 3 games available for a new console.... have you ever seen a new console release???

What is with people pretending they don't understand that early console generations are slow going? Are you pretending you don't know how console launches usually work, or are you really ignorant of the matter?
Agenda ignorance at its best. Believe me, they know. Its a common theme around these parts.

Considering how difficult it is to buy one 5 months post launch, they could have sold 30 million easily by now had they been able to keep up. People are starving for next gen systems, and based on the load times alone, for very good reason.

I moved the PS4 Pro to the living room when the PS5 Arrived.

Figured i could get some gaming in upstairs in certain situations.

Fired that baby up, wait to load, opened a game, waited to load, died, waited to load.
Turned off the system, reset it. Listed it online. Solid in 1 day for $450 Lol.

After using the SSD on XS and PS5. There is no going back. I am spoiled now.

I'm still amazed at Spider-man and Sack boy. Spider-man took forever to load on PS4 and LBP3 was a slog in loading! Even in Demons Souls it's so nice being able to switch from world to world in a few seconds.

I pressed play on NBA 2k for the first time, turned my head to talk to him for what felt like a couple seconds, and he tells me the game was loaded. Turned my head, and couldn't believe my eyes that he was right. Reading about these SSD's is one thing. But actually pressing play and just playing is jaw dropping. I'm not even kidding when I say I was switching games just because of how quick it was, and for no other reason.

it's such a weird comparison between Switch and PS5 launch aligned since they were sold in completely different quarters. Hardware sales skew heavily on Holidays period.
There is a reason why quarter results are compared to the same quarter in previous year, not the previous quarter.

This comparison will only make sense once PS5 completes 1 year (and I'm sure it will over perform if Sony can ramp up production).

Edit: I meant Switch-PS5 launch. Original post had PS4-PS5.

I'm lost on what you are trying to say. Both launched in November of their launch year, I think.

Huh? Both launched in November. PS4 Nov '13, PS5 Nov '20.

Still surprised my Xbox XS fires up faster then my TV turns on.

Unless you're Japanese, no.
PS4 NA: 15th November
PS4 RoW-ish: 29th November
PS5: 12-19th November

PS4 was the best selling console ever for the first few days, first month, first quarter, first two quarters. PS5 outsold all these records, Switch didn't. Sony plans to outsell with PS5 the record PS4 had for its 2nd fiscal year, and seems they will achieve it.

If PS5 achieves it, it will also mean that it outsell the PS4 record of being the best selling console ever during its first calendar year.

Launch aligned Switch didn't outsell PS4 untile the covid lockdown bump, until then the PS4 had all the records. So for a while the console to beat will be the PS4.

Scalpers probably got 5 million of those. I wish people would stop paying those scum sucking leaches!

Switch was ahead of ps4 launches aligned after 12 months, after that the wii is the fastest selling untill it fell off a cliff after like 90 million
But switch v ps4 after 12 months
ps4 was a head of the switch again once it was up a holiday season
then once the switch had the next holiday it surged ahead again
Same process repeated one more tome, then the covid demand spike let the switch pull way out in front
But Switch kept taking the lead for full year results

Yep, I would have bought one since ive been playing on a base PS4 lol. Waiting to get a PS5 to play Ghosts and AC Vahalla on it, and replay FF7 and Last of US 2 and others. At this point I think I probably wont be able to snag one til end of summer or next winter after Holidays maybe. Was going to finally do a new PC build but..well..we all know how that is going atm

Hardware specs could’ve been better and we would have more games to play.
But it’s a bigger problem for Microsoft, I like my XSX but I think it’s absolutely bonkers that they still haven’t released a single new first party games yet. Did they have no plan B, they thought everybody loved Halo? I don’t understand that thinking.

The fact that they never release ps5 software numbers while bragging about everything else is a big tell.
