It's 2021 why is Nintendo's online experience so terrible.

Sony and Microsoft got apps that you can download games directly to your consoles and is a way smoother experience in terms of online integration. With all the consoles Nintendo is selling and how long they have been around for there should be no way they are dropping the ball on this in 2021.

It's still not even up to par when online was free on the PS3.

The Switch is on track to be one of their most successful consoles ever.

The Wii was also an epic success, which went up against the console that really brought online console gaming to the mainstream (OG xbox was too niche to achieve that).

Think about what sort of message this sends.

I honestly believe 10 years from now Nintendo's online capabilities could be very similar to what we see today. I don't think that's an exaggeration at all.

I think it doesn't make much sense to have app for downloading games to Switch. It's as easy to undock and do it in portable mode.

Store isn't flashy and is kind of slow, but at least is simple and doesn't sacrifice more speed for big full screen promotions or such.

I was just giving an example where the other two companies have a more seamless experience compared to Nintendo. Nintendo seemed like they were working on this when the switch got first announced.Seems like nothing has changed much other than the bullshit online Nintendo emulator for SNES and NES games.

As a big Nintendo Stan. It really sucks. We can’t even send messages or talk to friends without having a smartphone app. Even then its super cumbersome.

Question does it show which friends are online on the app on the smartphone or console?

"Never"? LOL... Fans always critize the for their online, they just don't care enough, but I think I think it started to change due to covid... They finally added online to SM3DW so I see it as a sign
Many Nintendo fans blindly buy and support whatever they produce.
These people aren't vocal on Nintendo's shortcomings and in return you get soso products at times.

I gave up on it... Last time I checked you couldn't even voice chat without a cell phone :poop:

At this point it‘s really kind of baffling, especially since a competent, kid-friendly online ecosystem could be a pretty appealing value proposition. I‘d have thought two decades after consoles first went online Nintendo would‘ve figured out some cool, unique and very ‚Nintendo-y‘ solution, but instead there‘s nothing. If anything, it seems they even regressed after the WiiU!

I just don‘t understand. Do they think if they keep ignoring it that people will eventually get bored with online stuff and return to the good old days of pure offline gaming? I find that, er, unlikely, to say the least, and I say that as someone who has never in his life played a game online, or interacted with online services beyond the ability to download stuff.

Maybe... just MAYBE most online stuff aren't people priority (fans and not fans)? I don't care about chat or voice chat at all, I care about Smash lag, for example, but the other things? Yeah, we have discord for that or just never cared.

That's the thing, features that some demand actually are not THAT demanded in general, like achievements, I'll just disable them once they're mandatory by Nintendo.

Things we care about: In-game online stability, that they pay attention to lag, a way to play with friends that doesn't feel like a workaround, and that's not a lag fest.

Not that I don't want those features to be there, just that I don't care and I see many not caring at all too.

Ok but this thread is about?
Some people would like a good online component and it shouldn't be to much to ask from Nintendo.
It doesn't have to be PS network deep but come on it's 2021 and it's not free no matter how low the price is.

You saying things aren't that demanded proves what I said earlier.
Nintendo fans don't critique them enough/

This is a terrible excuse as many people use those apps to download stuff while they are away from home. On PS5 and SX I can purchase a gam and have it completely downloaded by the time I get home to turn it on.

But what are people gonna criticize if they don't care? People criticize what they care about, I hate Smash online for example even tho it's the only way I can play with my close friends that are spread in other countries, but online chat and achievements? Other people can fight for that as it doesn't affect gameplay at all for me... I'll be glad if they get it btw, but won't set myself on fire for it

They make enough money with the services and products they offer, so they have no incentive to spend money on stuff that they know their audience will pay for regardless of its quality.

Because Nintendo is still in 2001.
Tell me about it. I caved and bought a Switch in a big sale and just later realized that they made a portable console without bluetooth. How is this possible?

Want to use wireless headphones on a portable console? Well figure it out and buy more stuff for it to work.
They are in 2001 with technology but act like 2021 Apple with their prices/practices.

I don't understand. What experience? They are only unblocking your internet for $3 a month. It's despicable, and we'll all keep paying it when we want to play a fun game online.

I've never in my life logged on to a console 'online service', whatever that means, in search of something besides just letting my packets go to the server.

There ought to be a class action lawsuit against all three console manufacturers for pulling this garbage.

My Sony 3D pulse headset works great. I didn’t have to buy anything extra.

90% of the games are on P2P networking because they're too cheap to setup their own servers.

Like everyone is saying, they're raking in the money all the same, so probably Splatoon 3 will have all the same shittiness of the 2nd one, the people just idling in the games to grind their character, awful lag, 2-3 minute wait time in lobbies, hacking/glitching/cheating run rampant.

I just dont understand how every console online experience is worse than the last. The Wii did have a speaker for online chat. It was shitty but it's better than what the switch has. The wiiu and 3ds had miiverse, which was a fun way to engage with the community online. The switch has less online features than the 3ds did.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Because they can get away with it, have you seen how much money NSO is making?

Also, I think Nintendo is only trying because they absolutely have to. Their strength is local multiplayer.

Not only that but has anyone here tried local wireless? It's horrible. Seems to be a crapshoot when it works or not. Playing Mario 3d world for example was much better online then it was local.

Moderation, identity services, profile services, matchmaking (invites, joins, statuses, friends), communication services (voice, text, images, etc.), misc. social services (looking for group, trophy/achievements), platform upgrades if you want to count that, and the customer support.

The business model of at least Sony and Microsoft is to sell you a console almost at cost and then monetize on you through accessories, publisher royalties, services and now digital store-front cuts. Running (maintain too) and developing the services/features that enable the experience cost a lot of money and they could just eat that cost like they eat the R&D cost of their console but they choose not to. They aren't simply charging you to access the Internet (they aren't even technically doing that because you can use the Internet), they are charging you to access functionality of games that are mandated to be highly integrated with services that cost them millions to operate.

They don't do it on PC because they can't do it effectively due to the inherent nature of the platform and PC distribution platforms do a lot of cost cutting. Most if not all the PC stores use technologies that let them do things fast/cheap and they don't care about offering every features because users can just run multiple applications. Services like Steam also cut cost by having limited customer support options. These store fronts also used to take huge cut of around 30% of every sale whereas I believe console manufacturers get around 12% for traditional retail.

I think that as console gaming goes full digital (or closer to full) there's less of an excuse for MS, Sony to charge for online as their model drastically changes to greatly benefit them so that eating the costs of the services is what they should do.

My only recent experience with Nintendo's online was with Animal Crossing last Spring. It was one of the most painful and cumbersome experiences I've had since the ancient times of dial up on PC.

Nothing will ever top the horror that was dial up PC gaming.

Developers and publishers take care of all that crap(or should)...all I care about is playing the videogame...I don't even care if a developer uses P2P to save money. I have the client...I want to connect directly to a player, or to the publisher's server. Who the fuck is nintendo?

Years ago...MS stepped in-between hardware and software to STOP packets. They utilized contract law to wedge themselves between customers and developers. All the console manufacturers have been pretending they offer some service ever since, when it's really just a giant cockblock. Online plans are the opposite of service, they are REMOVING SERVICE if you refuse to pay.

Maybe it was just more obvious watching it happen in real time, when MS effectively imposed Live on the whole console industry. There was no fucking plan to play PSO on gamecube. Nintendo saw Xbox fans take it up the butt and joined the party.

I didn't get the part of remote installation.

Anyway, if I can get decent voice-chat (inside the console's OS) and dedicated servers for games like Mario Kart and Splatoon, I'll be happy already.

I have to be honest here and say I don’t even care that it’s well below even basic expectations. Online gaming has just never appealed to me.

I tried it with 360 and PS3 and while, especially on 360 the infrastructure and usability was very fast and slick, the experience itself of interacting with strangers was bad enough to put me off online gaming for life.
