Let's talk about multilanguage localization...

Well, I was about to play Gears Of Wars Ultimate Edition from Xbox Game Pass on PC and realized the dub was latinamerican spanish, so I wanted to change it to english... but SURPRISE! it's bound to my OS language.

I decided to just skip it, until I see a solution, then I opened Jedi Fallen Order and guess... SAME SHIT :D Actually not, it's even worse because the dub is spain spanish, and it's a game from 2019.

Games from first decade of 2k's and before I can understand but come on! It's been almost a decade since customized language selection was basically standard, even single language selection for voices and texts (which I'll always go with English for western titles), how can some big profile devs still keep this shit? Who told them people always want to play on their OS language?

I mean, srsly? What's this? 2008?

It's even worst with japanese games that won't let me choose Japanese for dub and have only English... I just skip them automatically, not even doubt, no matter how much I wanted to play it, just a NO.

I'll rather play them with english text and jap voices than with spanish text (my mother language) and english voices, but many japanese devs won't even bring the japanese voices, and in some cases the full japanese dub is already in the source files downloaded, but the devs won't allow me to switch it without modding the game (Final Fantasy X from the top of my head).

In XGP modding is not an option so I think the service won't be for me if I see this repeating so much...

BTW, do you guys/gals have gone through same shit? I've always thought North America and UK people don't give care or ever gets in this situation so that's the reason devs don't care neighter... Maybe?

I imagine developers weren’t thinking about it. Correcting the issue wouldn’t be difficult, but it would carry some kind of cost.

I’ve never had a problem with such settings but I seldom play games in my second language (Russian). The only games I can think of where I did change it were the Metro games and others from Eastern Euro studios because the Russian voice actors are usually natives (funnily enough, I did switch back to English for a short instant during Last Light because I needed to make sure I was understanding all the sci-fi gobbledygook correctly, which I was).

This is one of the things I’m most grateful for with Switch. There’s the odd exception here or there, but usually games released in more than one region will be bundled together for language selection. Like an international copy. However, I’m not sure how censorship localization comes into play now, if it does at all.

If I'm not mistaken, even some japanese games on the japanese store that weren't released in the west had english localization for some reason, am I right? They're on another level lol

Funny thing: in most cases you can't change OS language to unsupported one.

That's the main reason playing Doom on Nintendo Switch in Polish language is impossible. The game is translated... but the OS is not.

this is the kind of shit I hate about the gaming industry.

many people hold video games to extremely low standards for some reason, and shit like this is the result.

reviews never criticise this shit, noone with reach does publicly in fact.

imagine if DVDs/BluRays were in the same state as some video games at launch.. people would lose their shit.

also it's somehow ok for console games to have non-eebindable buttons. every PC game like that will be criticized into the ground.

we need to hold videogames to way higher standards... it's ridiculous

I know your pain I had to suffer Quantum Break with one of those horrid Latin American dubs since the game defaults to Mexican Spanish even if you set your console region to Europe. And since the game never got an European Spanish dub, I had a hard time understanding most of the slang they were using since there are a lot of words and expressions we don't use on top of the accent. , until I realised that setting my console to UK English would change the game to English which I understood better than that Latin American dub lol.

I remember the time I wanted to hear the English commentator’s voice in Smash 4. Changed the language on my WiiU and the fucking thing took something like 15 minutes to reboot completely and do God knows what to every single game on my external HDD. And the voice sucked anyway.

Any other console needs just a few seconds to change the system’s language, but it was already stupid to have to do so in the 7th gen and it’s even more stupid now. Also, the Switch sends you news and notifications in the OS’s language, so if you just want to play a game in English (Nintendo’s own games never allow for in-game language selection, ever), your notifications will come in English until you switch languages again. Nintendo’s localizations are usually fine, if not fantastic, but you don’t want to play DOOM or the Shantae games in Italian.

You sound like a total bitch, complaining about Spain's language. Imagine if the rest of us had the gall to complain about everything in English being American. Get over yourself you hugely entitled worm.

Yeah it fucking sucks.
Every game with multiple language options should just have a toggle in the menu so you can freely choose the text and voice language option you want (thankfully many games have started doing this).

I generally just keep my OS language in English on all devices. To avoid issues like these, and it's also easier when you need to troubleshoot something as there's usually way more info in English, and then you don't need to mentally translate every setting and option.

I don't use to play on consoles much but yeah I've seen that, which is weird because they'll have to do it anyway for PC so it's not extra effort, I'd get exclusive games

?? Bro chill. His post isnt even about that. 1 - He is obviouly living in a spanish speaking region, most likely he speaks spanish.

2 - He is compliaing that game language is tied to console region/language which makes no sense, should be independent.

Overwatch!!! It had the most horrible localization of PT from Brazil! Dialogue is like robots talking... they didn’t even bother. I had to change the language on the PS4.
if you are going to dub into another language, at least do it well.

so yes it is annoying.

Memory kinda iffy but I think that you only need to change the region, not the language on the Windows settings.
Timezone over Internet is tied to region on Windows 10. Doing this will mess with timestamp on emails, WhatsApp web messages and other things.
