Is that still the case? If so, are these sales comparisons meaningful?

At least it'll be easy to claim PS6 is doing gangbusters next gen! We'll compare it to PS5 & PS4, ignoring those at launch represented a huge loss of Japanese users compared to 3 (PS4 took a decade to make up that difference), which represented a 50% loss from 2 & 1 ltd! True fans think ahead!

It's just a hypothesis really. We're trying to think of factors that could explain the big difference we are seeing between hardware sales and software sales for PS5.

Sales data is indicating that to be true.
In UK where scalpers where ruling free were getting 2000-3000 units per shipment.

Japan that has strictly mensures and rules against scalpers are having 19k units per week being brought by them.

Looks, smells and feels like made up bullshit.... are you part of the FUD group?

1. Claim that Switch domination of the top 10 is due to people buying fewer physical games and more digital during the pandemic

2. when asked for proof, post an article about grocery sales

3. when asked why this supposed move away from physical games wouldn’t also affect Switch games (thus having no effect on their relative ranking in the list), then say that Nintendo’s domination of the top 10 is purely due to the size of the install base.

Am I following this correctly?

I have no ideia how created that ideia that you can sell games without user base.

Consoles have a 10:1 hardware:software in lifetime... PS4 now has a record with around 11:1.
The issue with the userbase arguement is that even if we compare PS5 to consoles with similar userbases, the software sales are still low

I would say the main reason is the type of software that's been released on PS5 so far has not been Japan-friendly. But that will improve later on.

In the US scalpers seem to buy somewhere between 10 and 20 % of units, then they proceed to resell them in the US, Japan is a little different as scalpers will sell to gray markets of china or export to nearby neighbors without an official release, from what I've read they sell for like 3 times the price, so the incentive to scalp is really high,
how many are scalped, I don't know, the non-existent ps5 software certainly is odd, to say the least, but that doesn't mean the majority are being scalped or anything.
during the ps4 launch, consoles were still banned in China so we can't really use that as a reference, but nobody is sitting on them.

I was debating Knack but thought I'd put it in for completeness (thought you're right I should have added a disclaimer). Both those weeks for PS4 and Switch are close to launch in Japan but they needed to be as per your request of hardware not over 500,000.

Yes those games would not make the top 10 but they would make the top 30, and PS5 games are not doing that (outside on new launches and week 11 2021). By the time they hit 500,000 in hardware:

  • Switch and PS4 had multiple games that sold >5k at retail outside launch week. No PS5 game has ever sold more than 5k outside launch week
  • Switch and PS4 had multiple games that has sold over 100,000. PS5 doesn't have anything close

And for PS4 and Switch we're talking about timelines of a few weeks, whereas for PS5 we're talking months. The software situation is very different and its very clear that hardware is not the limiting factor, its the type of games being released.

Digital is way better today than it was in 2014... that include COVID-19... the 2-3k difference to games enter in TOP10 or TOP30 is probably due the digital.

But hey when I evidence nobody shows anything solid just that minor differences.

Plus more recent MH data from Capcom.

Digital purchase in Japan in 2014 was near non existent... today is around 30%... way lower than west that is over 60%... in 2020 62% of the games (not including DLC or expansions) sold on PS4 were digital.

But hey the scalpers (that ends in consumers hands that buys games) is a better narrative lol even when there is a small 500k user base in Japan.
