F2P games on Xbox no longer require Gold as of today.

For everyone, no longer insiders only.

They finally did it. The only thing I didn't understand (and at this point it doesn't matter) was why it had to be an insider feature first. Regardless, glad that this is the norm across the board now.

Apparently there was a couple of bugs, don't know how or why

Really makes you think, if that public stunt with 120EUR Gold was worth it. Still don't get how does it even happened. One of the most bizzare situation this gen.

About time F2P was free for Xbox. Not sure why it was there. Musta been due to wanting Gold fees.

Oddly, it even went through that Xbox Insider beta test, so it even required gamers testing to see if it works(?).

It was the exact same price for a month as now, you just didn't get the discount. They clearly want to push people to gamepass monthly.

They should just roll gold in to game pass then.

They’d still be increasing their income;

£40-£50 for 12 months gold vs £95.99 for 12 months of basic game pass.

Amazing, gotta take my hat off to Microsoft, they are really leading the industry when it comes to pro consumer moves. Who would've thought that in 2021, F2P would mean free to play. It's incredible and I want a Phil shirt yesterday.
Yeah MS is leading the industry with free online cloud saves too. Nobody would dare to charge for online game saves right? Saving is something we all do but playing online isn't for everyone.

The difference is that you can still save without cloud saves, but you couldn’t play F2P without Gold. MS even had all streaming services, party chat, and their own MS store behind paywall. I remember that the browser only worked with gold.

Yeah Microsoft is my friend or whatever, but let's not forget it was Microsoft who first made console online service chargeable.
TBF they also kinda paved the way and made certain features a standard. You could argue Dreamcast did it first, but XBOX live had the unified friends list and voice chat support for every game. Made a world of a difference and def. merited value when it released compared to pretty much the wild-west that was online-gaming at the time where each game or service could offer wildly different amounts of support.

About time they did this, I've honestly not found a reason to buy XBLive in a very long time other than it being included with Gamepass at a slightly higher tier the few times I've subscribed to it, which has since lapsed for me as well. With the amount of f2p games available, it makes a lot of sense that they finally did this.

So Free-To-Play Games on Xbox are now Free-To-Play?

I'm still not sure what that says about people who give Microsoft credit for that.
It's not even about giving credit. It was clearly economicly stupid to not do so, because both Nintendo and Sony realised that keeping FTP free, would make them more money rather than less. There must be some strange bureaucratic rubbish going on behind the scenes that caused this to take that long.

I'm sure this was being talked about off and on before the xbox gold debacle.
The gold idea was never really trying to increase gold price, but rather to push everyone to gamepass. For some odd reason, they thought existing users wouldn't care as they had no increase, and that new ones wouldn't know any better and just compare gold to gamepass.

Anyhow, this is probably overdue, glad it happened.

Very pro consumer. I believe the first company to do it. Hopefully Sony and Nintendo follow suit.
