been playing some games with chromatic aberration / film grain , and i am starting to like effects like these , i am of the opinion that these effects give a nice filmic touch to a game and help in realizing the artists vision especially in regards to horror games,i think it adds a lot to the atmosphere of the game , bloodborne and alien isolation would look too clean without it , i hope future games use it well eg stalker 2 , RE8 , any possible future silent hill game..............what say you neogaf?

Film grain & motion blur can be ok, depending on the implementation. I usually turn them off though, like in Spyro remastered where the screen becomes vaseline when you spin the camera.

I can see why someone would like them, the visual flaws create a good illusion that there's a much more realistic visual behind all the filtering.
But I fucking hate chromatic aberration. Chromatic aberration is the 9/11 of graphical effects. Film grain's not the worst thing, but I'm turning it off.

screen motion blur is shit as it smears the screen but object motion blur is a superb effect

It always felt like when people say they hate motion blur they never realize how huge of a difference there is between per object and screen space. Per object looks great, screen space is terrible. It's annoying though in an options menu when it's not specified and/or tied to each other.

To each their own. I find film grain, in rare instances, makes games look a bit more like CGI and have more depth for some reason. Haven't seen a case where CA makes a game look better.

I understand wanting DoF in still beauty shots, only when you're not playing, but chromatic abomination is hands down the worst visual 'effect' to come out in recent years. If it can't be tuned off = game is unplayable to me.

I personally can’t stand CA, it’s ugly and distracting. It’s like how lens flare had to be in every game, my eyes aren’t a camera so unless the player is supposed to be looking through a camera why am I seeing all these camera effects. Same for film grain.

so if a game is brilliant , 4k , locked 60 fps with chromatic aberration and you will find the game unplayable?

Bloodborne and Alien Isolation as you mention really make good use of CA. I love the effect. Hendricks is correct mind, it needs to be a subtle effect and not plastered all over the place.

Cyberpunk was one. I think the other was Dying Light.

I don't even bother anymore, I check setting before I even start a game and turn it off if it's a setting.

There was also a game I remember a while ago that you couldn't turn it off.
well cyberpunk runs like shit and dying light has that first person view with parkour , also there are other things to consider before chromatic aberattion , is the fps smooth , image sharp , along with display screen quality and size.
a lot of factors to be honest

Yeah Cyberpunk does run like shit and normally I wouldn't even bother but I remember people saying it's part of the aesthetic. So I tried again and noped it right off.

Film grain in a medium that cannot use film. Dumbest fucking idea I've ever seen; turn it off immediately. You need better art designers if the best way you can make a "gritty" image is to fuck up your artists work and then puke it back out every frame.
Chromatic aberration can make sense, but it usually doesn't because developer's don't understand subtly. Turn that shit way down.
Motion blur occurs in film because the frame rate is too low to properly capture moving objects, leading to the trail effect. It's a defect. Games do not have this problem. Turn that shit right the fuck off.

The irony here is that cinema has been working hard for decades to remove film grain and motion blur from their images, while game developers have been working hard to add it in because they think it's "cinematic". It's sad.

Lol what? Was not aware this was a thing. Film grain is just baked into the medium until digital filmmaking removed it entirely what is this worked for decades to remove it thing lol?

I don’t get the outrage. Like you guys want to see the pure pixels or something. It’s so silly.

Film grain is just another tool for visual art design. Same as any other.

Games or films, it doesn't matter, its all just a choice by the artist. Judge the implementation, but view it as the artist intended.

Depends on the game, how its used, etc. Naughty Dog used both grain & CA very well in The Last of Us Part II.

This has a bunch of great examples.
