You can. You can't download patches and games without internet connection, guess what you can't either on PS3 or PSP. with or without. Sony has wiped out all three generations of games.
They will do the same with PS4 and PS5 to cover their console flaw design with the cbomb.

Xbox's issue was more obvious and criticised at launch but people moved on and no one talks about it anymore. People will also soon forget about this and move on.

There is an extra step you need to take in order to ensure that you are able to play games that 'require' a patch. Otherwise, when the internet is unavailable, it will keep kicking you to the home screen. I lost internet for about a week or so and learned this the hard way. Luckily the solution to it is easy once you figure it out but the system doesn't tell you that (you have to go into settings and turn on 'Go offline' otherwise you won't be able to play games that need updates - with PS3 you can just hit 'Circle' to dismiss the update message.) Possibly why he thinks you can't play online.

I have 1995 and 1997 computers still with good CMOS battery. How are these things so good

You can replace the battery, but you'll then have to connect it online. Same as the PS4.

The batteries usually last around 10-15 years. Once it goes dead, you'll have to reestablish an online connection with Sony's servers in order for it to synch back up.

The fact that anyone is defending this is shear insanity.
Once the battery dies and once Sony turns off the activation servers - you can not play any game on PS4 and PS5. Disc or digital. Your console turns into a brick.
Does anyone think Sony will keep up the activation servers forever? The company might not even exist 10-15 years from now.
This should spark a push for Sony to change this via firmware update - which they could do and all this will be moot.

It took 8 years to find it because that's how long some consoles' batteries last. This was just recently discovered.
