Ok, Sony now reminds me of previous gen MS

I am not that much of a gamer anymore because I don’t have much time, but I like to stay informed and I will sit and play a good game every once in a while.

ok, so I’ll be straight with this one. Sony really reminds me of last gen MS and I mean that in a bad way. I feel like something is off this time but I can’t explain that to be honest. To much negative press, lack of new good info etc. I don’t know, maybe it’s my idea. I’ve been with Sony since PS2, I also had some MS and Nintendo consoles in the meantime (GameCube, wii, wiiu, Xbox 360, xbone) but PlayStation was my main always. It’s the first time I have this feeling.
I didn’t feel like this even with PS3 at launch. Is it my idea or not? What’s your opinion?

Jim Ryan me if this already exists.

I’m not sure which lack of good news you are talking about? Delayed of the Bestelda’s game?

Because they are giving good news and game announcements frequently.

I’m playing PS5 normally and even more than what I played with PS4 at launch (yeap I brought that failed Bomberman clone at launch... Basement Craw 1/10 in my view because I had nothing to play).

You are just a vicitim of believing social media and reality is the same. They are not.

The current and near-future pipeline from Sony looks solid.

And we have an article that three studios - one that we had never heard about - got their ideas rejected over the last two years. That is as close to a nothingburger you can come in a creative business.

Will Sony do poorly or good? I have no idea. But if you are interested in big bidget exclusive games and solid third party support, it is still the place to be.

Choose MS for value (but still a lacking catalogue).

Choose Nintendo for their exclusives (but much smaller third party support) and mobility.

Not that hard to be honest.

The new gen just started. Both companies are really lacking in the software department. I expected that when I bought both my consoles last year. It will take some time for the big hitters to arrive.

Microsoft has been able to soften this a bit by paying third parties money to put stuff like a Outriders on Game Pass. Sony probably doesn’t care too much about that though since their console still keeps selling out in five seconds. Microsoft is coming from behind last gen so they have to bring the fire.

Sony just needs to show some more footage of what they have been working on and communicate a little better since they can’t fill in the drought period with Gamepass stuff.

Gaming media keeps publishing “Sony is in trouble!” stuff because they need clicks in this slow period. Then all the YouTube and Twitter personalities rush to say the same thing. Sony is fine.

We are not even a year into PS5 yet. They still have great talent at their studios. It’s best to wait and see, whilst some insiders or journos could be sincere , I get the feeling others are trying to fill gaps for their own benefit. We don’t really know what’s going on behind the scenes or the full extent of green lighted projects for the years ahead.

Having to pay full price compared to a sub service release isn’t a great look granted however to me Xbox has more to prove this generation than Sony in the games department, Gamepass or not and admittedly I’m someone who at heart, likes Xbox more than PlayStation.

You need to calm down. We're lucky that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all look strong at the moment. Even better, they look strong in different area's which gives us choice and drives competition via value. This is nothing like XBone territory. Even with the lack of next-gen games of note the hardware for both is a decent upgrade just because of the SSD alone. Whatever you own, you have a great lineup for the next 3 years - arguing over who ships what first doesn't really matter. Aside from pixel counting at 800x zoom and counting 3 second frame dips in a 50 hour games the third parties are both running well on the new hardware etc.

Sony are the next Sega. Soon they will be publishing The Last of us Part IV and Spider-ethnic-man on Microsoft consoles.

With the way they are going..... putting games on PC and XBox already. I have no doubt.

Right now it's just hardware dominance that is keeping them on top but if the mainstream get wind of how things are, it wont be long to change and it will all be at the feet of Hermen and Jim.

They aren’t putting games on Xbox lol. That was MLBs choice and completely out of Sony’s hands.

At this moment sony has some surprisingly good looking exclusives coming out this year or next, the first games released wasnt that decent but either was ms as well but from reading the rumours about then prioritizing more on cinematic games and such I have a bad feeling about there 1st party lineup but i mean sony is pretty good at negotiating with publishers to get afew exclusives which i think they will (as well as MS) but at the mean time i think they will still be at the top but i agree with you OP, making all there games cost first party games cost £70 is abit of a kick in the teeth

Sony simple stumbled out of the gate this gen regarding their offerings. They screwed up how cross gen titles work on PS5(double installs), along with not having a wide enough offering of optimized games to run on the PS5.

Microsoft on the other hand has had Gamepass to get it through the initial drought of games for Next Gen. Their purchase of Bethesda has brought a whole library of games to the masses in Gamepass and they have gotten some Day 1 third party games related on GP as well(outriders and MLB).

They both still suffer from supply constraints, so Sony still has time to turn the tide of good press before both consoles are widely available for purchase and it becomes a question of which one to get instead of get the one available.

And "they" say I was trolling. People are getting nervous about a company being quiet. But they had actual games at lunch and we know they have more games in production (duh). Sony was the first one to offer games every month with your subscription, playstation now, remote share/play are just a couple of things that say that Play Station is in tune and willing to change with the times. Now they are realising some games on PC. And they are going to have their own game pass because that is what people want and more importantly; the market is demanding it.

These couple of good weeks for xbox PR and PlayStation fans crying and shouting "Jim Ryan is ruining my childhood" is at the end, a good thing because keeps the pressure on Playstation to act accordingly. The same happened with Xbox and the reason why they have been working so hard just to have positive momentum.

Let us know when Sony releases a console that is a good bit weaker, for a 25% higher price cuz it includes a peripheral that people don’t want while telling us that we must remain connected online to a play OUR games. And then there was the lack of exclusive “must play” games (besides one with Forza in the title)

That is how MS started last Gen. No one is emulating that at present. MS going their new GaaS thing and Sony pretty much continuing exactly what they did last Gen.

So OP, gonna have to disagree.

What’s happening with the external storage? Habve they updated any news on it?
What do u think? Im still waiting on any news for different coloured controllers.
Feel like i will be waiting a long time.

I was discussing with a mate the games scheduled for release this year and the two biggest is ratchet and maybe horizon? Thats pretty disappointing to me as i hve zero interest in both. I was hoping for GT7 this year but fat chance of that now. I swear that got delayed because jim ryan took too long to commit to psvr2 and now PD preparing it for VR showcase title.

I get that there would be game delays with what’s been happening with Covid but i dont get the delay in the external storage. They said it would be ready for years end but were 6 months into next gen and nothing

If i was a betting man, id say the delay with the external storage will either be heat concerns or, issues with third parties matching the neccesary specs and making it “affordable” in sonys eyes. Who knows at this stage.

There’s rumours about the heat thing but i cant see it being true because surely they tested it while making the console. Unless in the real world the SSD’s run much hotter, as for price am sure they knew with what they were going with was gonna be costly

Not necessarily because remember at the time of announcemnet there wasnt any nvme drives on the pc market that ran that fast. Also its in a small space with no air flow.
The cost might be an issue caused by the pandemic. Manufacturing costs will be higher due to less workers and cost of components etc.
If neither of these were true, id have expected us to be using extra storage by now as there are nvme drives fast enough on the market now.

You are in the middle of a news spin cycle where half the industry is pushing a dumb a fuck "Are big blockbuster games bad?" narrative because Xbox can only play old games at the moment.

Just chill out. So people are going crazy with hype because they can rent the ability to play Skyrim in 2021. Who cares?

You say you have been around for a long time. So this isn't your first console launch. You know these can be light on the games, heavy on the drama. This year it's even more insane with the VID. Sony has tons of games announced and ready. Just have some patience.

There are worrying signs at Sony, but it's nowhere near as bad as Microsoft last gen and the PS5 is still objectively a better choice than the XSX.

The PS5 is also a far better console than the PS4 was at this point last generation. Recall that the PS4 didn't get a good "first-party" exclusive until Bloodborne in spring 2015, and then it was basically crickets until Uncharted 4 a year later. PS5 is way ahead of that pace, even if Horizon and God of War are both delayed until next year.

The proper criticism of Sony isn't that they're doing a bad job now or that Microsoft is doing a better job than them now, because that's just not true. The proper criticism is that the apparent trajectory of both companies might cause Microsoft to start doing a better job than Sony like three or four years from now, and that Sony should be preparing for that eventuality more competently than it currently is.

But let's be frank: Xbox fans have been counting their exclusive game chickens before they hatch since approximately 2010 and absolutely nothing has materialized yet.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
They seem pretty much the same in most regards
Basically
Jim Ryan
"Why would anyone want to play old games"
Phil Spencer
"Why would anyone want to play new games"

This is amazing, lmao.

OP....where were you when the specs were first officially revealed?

I have been hearing this off and on for the past 2 years.

"what are they hiding?"
"why are they so quiet?"
"they're embarrassed of the specs! lol"

Games prices revealed...

"wtf are they thinking??"

And yet their consoles sales havent missed a beat. And looks like they are able to put even more stock out.

This is just part of the cycle to me.

You can be reminded of last gen MS all you want, but until we see sales get affected...

🤷‍♂️

Yeah but during making the ps5 they will of had prototypes of an SSD, it’s just really odd that it’s taking them so long

Not even close. Sony just wrapped one of their best generations ever (imo). PS5 had a decent start despite the pandemic and it seems they won't change their business model anytime soon, which is a good thing.

I can agree that they need to step it up and have a more aggresive approach towards the competition, but compaing them to MS in 2013 is ridiculous.

I'm not sure what the actual hardware market is like but I'm convinced the issue lies in the bug with updates on external storage. I think it happens when you move from internal to external, and then try to update. It just won't do it. Which means you have to move it back to the internal SSD and then update it. Happened twice now with RDR2 and Cyberpunk 2077. You get an error notification each time you log in, then you can't update the game without an error. Only fix is to retransfer, update, transfer back. The fact we haven't had this patched since November seems to indicate a bigger/more troublesome issue to fix imo. This is obviously just speculation from experience though. But it wouldn't be great to release additional storage and then people can't update their games so sounds plausible.

It must leave like an origin file or lock file on the original destination drive which means it can't update after being moved I think.

It's not so much that Playstation's console warfighting power is diminished from what it was during the PS4. It's just that MS has licked their wounds, changed leadership, got hungry, opened their war chest, hit the gym, got shredded, and became a 400 lb roid-raging Game Pass gorilla. All positive MS PR is essentially negative Sony PR.

Yeah could be but it doesn’t happen all the time? It just seems strange that we’re 6 months in and no talk about it.

mate the drives out that are the speed that’s needed?

I agree with OP in that Sony really sucks right now, but as far as I can tell that's due to their competition being just as poor. Seems both Sony and Microsoft are content with sandbagging on their customers for as long as they can get away with the Covid excuse. Games don't live in 1 year cycles so the fact that Sony just abandoned any new video games for remasters is by decision.

Sony isn't trying to be the best video game company there is, they're just trying to be 1% better than their competition and unfortunately they still are

they truly believe they don't have to move an inch for consumers anymore after last gen's success.
Yet, they provided you with a catalogue of AWESOME games for anyone subscribed to PS+ called PSPlus Collection, recently they gave FOR FREE Ratchet&Clank (and there even was a 60fps patch) and in a few days the'll give you HZD: Complete Edition.

This alone shows that Sony is starting to feel the breath of MS and I'm sure they'll provide more incentives/reasons for players to stay with them. This would NEVER happened two years ago they they THIS far away from MS.
