Sony creating new mobile division inside of PlayStation Studios

Given that all games are developed on PC and if SONY is making money from both the PS5 user and PC user. How is that a competitor for time and more so money?
Mobile gaming is a completely different thing and market. It is lower end hardware, made to play on the go, in short burst, for less quality concerned consumers, whom are much more price sensitive. It is a different costumer base.

Pc gaming serves roughly the same purpose as console gaming, pc and console is roughly the same experience.

When sony publish their first party games on pc, there is less incentive to play games on playstation.

Sony makes money of third party games sold on playstation. They take a 30% cut on every game sold on playstation. For every call of duty, fifa or gta sold on playstation, sony gets a 30% cut. They dont get a cut on third party games on pc.

If you dont need a playstation to play playstation games there is less incentives to buy a playstation.

If playstation sells less hardware. There is less third party games sold on playstation. Thus less money being made.

First party games merely exist to sell playstations. fewer people will buy playstation if they can play all games on pc.

Also on pc sony only get 70% on all sold first party games. Since they have to give steam a cut.

But you knew all of this.

Are you kidding me?

They fucking had a PS MOBILE division, and whatever PS MINIS were, to perpetrate across the PSP, Vita and old Xperia Play phone. And they killed it, just like they did the Vita.

All I need is a Vita shell decked out with all needed pressable shoulder buttons and sticks for 1:1 input. Have it run android so I can sideload whatever, PS Remote Play app, XB GP/XCloud app.

... It's not that hard, is it.

That's just silly talk. Did it hurt the PS or their sales that the likes of Metal Gear 1, Final Fantasy 7 were also on the PC? And if SONY developed the game or own any IP rights to any console game they look to sell on the PC game, Sony get the full cut

imo this is not the worst news, mobile gaming is big.

however, if you read the postings, its about adapting SCE popular franchises for mobule.... argh more UC, TLOU, SM etc? :messenger_persevering:

They have fate grand order, from their japanese side..... nothing to do with 'playstation franchises', and then they also chose to kill SCEJ....

again it's the direction and choices that jimbo takes, concerns us..

Pc gamers and console gamers played different games back in 98. Controller barely worked at all on pc. 3d accelerator cards where just starting to get traction. Pc today offers the same experience as console, often at better quality. Same games, infront of the tv. It is the same thing.

Pc is playstations main competitor. Playstation makes money of third party games. In the same way steam does. Its no difference. Only sony has to sell playstation hardware to do so.

Sony does not get a full cut on first party games on pc. Since they dont have their own store. They sell it on steam, egs what not. Thus have to pay steam, egs 30%.

PC and consoles are different, hence why many 3rd parties do well selling their same games on the consoles and also the PC and do very well.
If SONY looks to bring out a physical copy they take almost all the cut, just like their games on the console

Physical games sales are dead on pc. Thanks to piracy and the dominance of the steam store.

What is the name of the mobile gaming division that Sony has? Does it mean they will move it into PlayStation? I remember the first Sony mobile games were back in the mid 00's, for Java phones. I remember back then there was a GoW game and games with the license of some movies popular back then.

They let the vita die, but yet want to make cell phone games now?
I was a big fan of PS Vita, but PSVita and PSVita games, Minis or Xperia Play didn't sell a shit. So they killed them early.

Mobile instead now is half of the global gaming market, bigger than consoles, and during several years has been growing faster than consoles and PC and during years has been a huge. Mobile games market in 2020 generated $86.3 Billion. Some of the companies that make more money in gaming are from mobile.

This is why all 3 console makers and most big console game publishers started to chase the mobile market while ago.

Sony allow you to play your AAA via remote play/PSNow on PC and other consoles (but not mobile)
Some time ago, when they mentioned to be working on next gen PS Now inprovements, they said that one of the areas they wanted to expand is the platforms where PS Now runs, mentioning they want to make a PS Now client for mobile and tablets.

There's nothing wrong with creating a small mobile division.. Mobile games are really profitable.
Sony already has a small (and successful) mobile division. Seems they are expanding it and moving it inside PlayStation (it would make sense to have all their gaming stuff inside their gaming division).

I doubt it and even with a 30% take that's still 60% profit for a game already developed and made for the console. No wonder why so many developers publish their games on a console and also the PC

If all games are available on pc, less people will buy a playstation. Less people will buy third party games on playstion. Less money in sony pocket.

Jim ryan is short sighted idiot. He is nickle and diming instead of building up the playstation brand and console.

Selling exclusives on pc on some one elses store is short sighted. It devalues playstation, and in the long run damages it. If you can play all games on pc, most people will choose pc. It is that simple.

No one is going to give sony a 30% cut on pc.

If people already have a gaming pc, they are going for 3rd parties on Pc anyways, because of better quality, mod support and free online gaming. It wouldn't change much since Pc and consoles are like motorcycle and car for many people. Both get you from A to B, but the feeling is completely different.

Saying the ssd and the controller is the most exciting this gen in a hobby that's about playing games sounds so wrong in any way possible.

But why do you check Gaf then? Feeling insecure by Gaf not defending every lame thing Sony does anymore?

We've seen plenty of hardcore Sony defenders on this board beginning to question sonys decisions lately.

And that really says Sony are doing things they shouldn't.

Your ssd doesn't help you on your phone though.
>Saying the ssd and the controller is the most exciting this gen in a hobby that's about playing games sounds so wrong in any way possible.

How is it wrong in every way possible? The ps5 is keeping even with the series x in performance while also having an ssd that throughout the gen is going to be used to do some crazy things. The instant switching of entire planets in ratchet and clank for example. The borderline non existent loading times in demons souls for another example. That’s more exciting as a gamer than having resolution be at a slightly higher dynamic range on one console over another. The controller is also by far the thing I hear ps5 owners talk most about, as it’s their most comfortable design yet and offers a ton of little things that make gaming genuinely more immersive. Every gen is a power jump. The ps5s ssd and controller are the only things this gen to go beyond that in anyway.

>But why do you check Gaf then? Feeling insecure by Gaf not defending every lame thing Sony does anymore?

Sony hasn’t really done anything though. They’ve had like one indie state of play since this gen started. Some of their games got delayed because of a pandemic. Even with those delays every game they put out is one more game than MS has put out yet. Japan studios brought their restructuring on themselves. Not sure what else there is to bitch about really. Stop acting like this is all organic. This wasn’t all the case even a full week ago. None of this makes a real lick of sense.

Except we know that if returnal comes out and is really good, or later this year when something else comes out all that is pretty much going to stop. I’m still not really sure what it is people are bitching about. The ps5’s released first parties and slate of upcoming ones already eclipse the Xbox line up. Isn’t that why people buy a ps5, exclusives?

I wouldn't mind so much of PlayStation was getting more studios to make different IP's and more exclusives.....

But investing in mobile gaming while ignoring the massive holes in first party is terrible.

Aniplex operates under Sony Music division. Any money Fate/Grand Order do goes to that division. And if im not mistaken, the Developers of the game are actually 3rd party, Aniplex is the publisher.
Sony already has a mobile Playstation division for some time, but they dont have released anything worthwhile. They seem to be trying to make a better effort on mobile now that will actually bring money to the gaming division.

At the end of the day, that money is Sony's. The different divisions aren't separate companies. They've been operating under a One Sony model for some years now. It just seems ill advised for PlayStation to chase the mobile market when those resources could be allocated to PS5 and PSVR, especially during a time when their chief competitor is absolutely eating their lunch with their moves. I guess it's not that surprising now that the Bloomberg expose is out highlighting the turmoil within PlayStation.

Both should be happening at the same time. It’s off putting that after such a winning strategy in the second half of the PS3 gen, and after the absolute home run of the PS4... there’s such little ambition to expand.

Yoshida says content is key and that number of units sold isn’t as important as amount of spending per user, Jim Ryan says exclusives have never been more important, and yet here we are closing studios, losing huge IP to the direct competitor, and basically watching Sony focusing on selling hardware...

This interview keeps giving me pause: https://www.wsj.com/articles/sony-ceo-is-a-fortnite-fan-and-not-just-for-the-profits-11600603200

“ Mr. Yoshida: We’re No. 1 in the world in music publishing and No. 2 in recorded music. Yet, if you’re talking about revenue, for us games are three times what music is. The game industry is a $150 billion business. We’re targeting core gamers with immersive console games. It’s something of a niche.”

Like they did when PS games came out on the PC back in the day?
To be fair, I was going to get a PS5, but Sonys comments on last years riots made me jump ship.

Although TBF the only Sony game I really care about is Wipeout, which is now dead. GOT made me bored to tears playing the same open world game with the same missions. Didn't even finish it.

Ah, thank you for the chart. I remember it from a while back.

I was wrong though. I thought mobile was more than PC + console combined. Looks like it's 49%. Close enough. I knew it was huge and growing at the fastest clip too despite already being the biggest pie slice.

Very abnormal as trending usually has the biggest pie slices having slower growth (saturation), whereas the small guys have more opportunity to ramp up with room to go.
