WO LO LO!

The Age of Empires team is thrilled to announce a celebration of the franchise with a new event: the Age of Empires: Fan Preview. The event begins with a special, half-hour broadcast starting at 9 a.m. PT on April 10, which will be streamed live on AgeofEmpires.com, Twitch, Facebook Live, the Xbox YouTube channel, and Bilibili for our fans in China! Following the broadcast, we will open a limited-time digital experience on AgeofEmpires.com to continue celebrating with the community for the week to follow.

Whilst we don’t want to spoil everything we have in store, we know that you’ve been eager for more glimpses of Age of Empires IV since the first trailer at X019. Our broadcast will include a new look at gameplay, civilizations, campaigns, and more for you to enjoy! We will also be sharing some exciting news for our Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition players, as well.

Since the release of Age of Empires over 20 years ago, the franchise has grown to support a worldwide community of players with a shared love of real-time strategy. Over the last three years, we’ve delighted seasoned players and new fans alike with the Definitive Editions of Age of Empires, Age of Empires II, and Age of Empires III: projects which were made possible thanks to the feedback and passion of the community. We are so proud to have such an energetic, dedicated fanbase at the foundation of our community.

…and with the Definitive Editions in the hands of players, there’s a new era on the horizon…

The community has been the driving force behind this amazing franchise and fueled its evolution for more than two decades; now it’s time to celebrate with an event built for YOU!

So, mark your calendars:

April 10 @ 9 a.m. PT /12 p.m. ET / 16:00 UTC / 18:00 CEST

Then garrison yourself in your Town Center, gather your snacks, and get HYPED for all the Age of Empires news, content reveals, and surprises on the way. We’ll talk more about the event as we get closer, as well as where you can tune in when it’s time to make history!

I look forward to hearing them explain why they cant put it on Xbox consoles. (Even with the keyboard and mouse now being accessible)
Honestly I think it would cause more issues for general consumers if the only good way to play the game on Xbox was to use a M+K so I think they would still need to figure out a way to support the controller.

Selfishly I would also like to see if they could also figure out a way to work with touch controls as I could see me killing a lot of time playing this on my phone via xcloud.

Those screen shots look great. My interest is rising. Just seeing this makes me want to go build some walls in a preemptive land grab to secure resources.

I’d love for MS just to straight up port this with a huge disclaimer on the store page saying Mouse and Keyboard required.

Fuck using a pad, just let people choose whether they want to play it and they can invests the £15 to get a m&kb.

Not holding my breath, but hoping for a playable version on Xbox somehow. It'd like to do this on the comfy couch.

Question for anyone who intends to play this on a couch:
Have you played through an RTS campaign that way before?

The default distance from a TV screen usually makes it stressful for me to micromanage or get enough information from the interface.

No, I haven't. Played through a lot of RTS on PC back in the 90s. Heard some RTS on consoles got it right and were enjoyable with a controller.

Games like Halo Wars are so striped and neutered in their gameplay and design in order to accomodate controllers. Every gaming genre is neutered in order to be playable on pads, because those are terrible tools for gaming. But strategy games are probably affected the worse. This game is NOT going to come on xbox. Because they didnt designed them so and Spencer even said as much some time ago, that there are games that feel more like a pc game and some feel suited for consoles. This is not one suited for consoles.

People should really stop wanting to get this on xbox. It would only translate into a terrible game for everyone. You dont have a PC or dont want to play it on a PC ? Then dont play it. Thats it.

Last year I played a hell of a lot of AoE2 with my buddies during lockdown, so now I'm really excited about the new game.

This is one of these very rare "big titles" upcoming for which I can still feel a bit of hype. Don't disappoint me, relic.

I have a 2400 € PC with a 30 Series RTX card in it. I just don't feel like playing on PC atm.
You can sell me your RTX 30. I'll pay you the full price without a care in the world if it's used.

There, I lifted a burden from your weak console peasant drooping shoulders.

Yeah, I heard Halo Wars was playable, but haven't confirmed myself.

I've tried using a TV with Warhammer, AoEIII and Company of Heroes (all with m+k). The experience wasn't great.
Halo Wars 2 is a fine casual RTS played it steady for months on Xbox using a controller. Controller does work, but same functionality will be missing.

This is the first feature for MS after the launch of the consoles. A new game from the series, wonder if MS money lifted the game to new levels?

Not interested. I'm 100% certain I'll be going back to PC sometime this year. Just not now, not for this title (probably, not sure depends on how good it reviews). Working from home as lessened my enthusiasm for playing in front of the monitors immensely this last 13 months.

I dropped the desk a few years ago, just a chair/couch with a 65" TV now, I can do basic browsing with the mouse fine on the chair arm and if pushed I can do mouse on my leg (Saving up for a lapboard of similar but its not really a priority right now) for something that really needs the mouse. I couldn't go back to my 40" TV, I used to sit like 3' from it so if I went back to desk and monitor setup it would have to be 43-49" for same effect as I have now.

TBH though, I wouldn't go back to a monitor because they are all shit IQ compared to my TV (Or even much cheaper/lower spec TVs than mine), I think there are one of two "gaming displays" that come close to good HDR TVs for contrast, local dimming, etc but they are thousands of pounds so not likely I'd get one of those any time soon. I got such a good deal on my TV it just can't be beat, if I could get one of those displays for like 500 quid it would be worth it maybe.

The rest of the world waited years for Cyberpunk information to trickle out.

I've waited years for AoE IV information to trickle out. I couldn't be happier that we're getting a proper reveal now after years of a slow drip of title screens, short videos, and screenshots.

True patricians want Age of Mythology 2 though.

Everytime these types of game launch the same time as console they end up being dumbed down for console and losing potential on pc.
You're not wrong, but maybe MS will finally embrace Mouse and Keyboard fully on games like this. They could even bundle the game with a cheapo mouse. A fella can dream.

I'm very curious to see where they went with this. From the few images and videos I saw, I somehow got the impression they made the game less aracade-y, and veered a bit more towards a City Builder-light for the economy and something regiment-based for the military. Very curious to see where they landed on the spectrum for both of those.
