Resident Evil Village To Offer Graphics & Performance Mode Like DMC5, Devs Putting PS5 to Full Use

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

PlayStation gamers hoping to grab Resident Evil Village next month will be delighted to know that the game will be making full use of the PS5, as well as offering an optimized experience on the PS4.

Speaking to director Morimasa Sato about how Resident Evil Village took advantage of the PS5 hardware in the latest issue of OPM (Official PlayStation Magazine,) here’s what he had to say concerning different modes (graphics and performance) in Resident Evil Village.

OPM: Will there be different modes to play in, as in DMC5, and if so what will these be?
Morimasa Sato: There are settings which will allow each player to optimize the experience according to their preference.
When asked how the team is making use of the PS5, here’s what he had to say.

We’re putting the high-performance power of the PS5 to full use to create a realistic experience of this terrifying village.
There are a lot of exterior scenes in the game and in the past it’s been challenging to produce great-looking visuals for areas like this while maintaining performance, but it’s been a breeze with PS5. I feel like the possibilities of what I can express in a game have been expanded.
Morisama goes on to explain that while they have utilized the technology offered by the PS5, PS4 owners can rest assure knowing that the game has been optimized for the console as well.

Nice, modes for resolution and performance are always welcome.

So...I take it the PS5 version is ok now?

I bet GAF Gold that the 120hz mode will drop below 60fps in cutscenes on PS5 :messenger_tears_of_joy: XSX will be a bit better.

I don't know who I'm betting with though, make yourself known bettor!

My bet is PS5 will be superior performance at release then series x will get patched and they'll run so close that it won't matter

This has been the theme with capcom titles between xbox and playstation. See resident evil 2 and 3 remakes. While the one X was superior in power playstation performed better. It wasn't until later patches that xbox either matched or surpassed playstation in performance. I just don't see that being different when the new resident evil releases.

and yet the game is releasing on ps4 and xbox one
I believe its possible for a game to take advantage of a more powerful console while being cross gen, there are examples last one like GTAV, Tomb Raider Rise etc.

But i mean, VILLAGE offering higher and more stable framerate, 4K visuals, no loading times, updated audio and controls on PS5, raytracing and more at NO additional cost is a pretty good deal.its not just mere res, the ways the game is upgraded are significant compared to the last gen versions(and considering there are mid gen consoles like PS4pro) it just won't be that noticeable on screenshoots 😋.obviously we are going to see games designed for PS5 later on, but this already is a big upgrade tech wise Capcom has been working hard to make the best version they can for each console 👍

Hell just look at DMC V running at 30fps with ray tracing on next gen, we are downgrading

Well alot of talk until i see the final retail version since the demo had frame drops, not that i care but im starting to feel people just cant wait to see frame drops its irritating weve fallen right where digital foundry and other tech youtubers wanted us to be so they can keep talking and comparing nonesense and keep making money...

As usual all this locked 60fps hype will die soon enough and locked 30 quality modes especially in graphical presentations like uncharted and so on with 50-55-60fps hiccups in performance modes or arcade games will start being the norm. And people will forget about this whole media fabricated narrative that games with frame drops and sub 4k resolution are unplayable, its just itrritating,

Not every game needs 60 fps some are just fine with 30 and some are fine with 50-60fps hiccups

Not every game needs full 4k, resolutions are dead nowadays, reconstruction techniques are here to stay.

A locked 30 4k upscaled 3rd person cinematic action adventure game is fine if they push graphics to the edge and an absolute must, the same way a locked 60fps 4k shooter/ racing game arcade/ simulation with no hiccups is a must Lets leave it at that. Only this games are exceptions.

Lets leave the game developers to give us the best games they can make because this constant fps vs resolution vs zoom in 1000x is a pointless old boring and irritating discussion

This time the gap isn't it that trivial. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like the last Yakuza in performance.

Wait... so we have a 30 fps mode and a 60 fps mode? The demo looked great at 60 fps.
Good. Raytracing at 60 fps is literally impossible in such consoles. Just I hope there is really a 30 FPS mode and not a fluctuant 60 FPS as DMCV with raytracing. Uncapped 60 fps seems their 30 FPS mode

I have no worries playing RE8 on my base PS4 slim. Even when Capcom was making mediocre games during the PS3, I thought their engine ran just fine. Their output on PS4 has been even better. I'm expecting longer load times but I can live with that.

Maiden demo had already native-like 4K image quality with ray tracing and 60fps (with some minor fluctuations).
I think if they can keep that graphical/performance balance in the final game adding full gameplay and combats, that would be great for the standard mode.
Maybe they can run the PS4 version at 120fps on PS5 (which is interesting thinking about the potential for PSVR2 down the line).
30fps option for full native 4K when the reconstruction they're using is already producing results that are hardly distinguishable from native 4K (see DF analysis) isn't really worth it. Unless they totally go crazy with ray tracing and global illumination as well.

Minor fluctuations? That demo's framerate tanked as soon as the daughter and her flies appeared on screen.

I have to disagree. What we see in the demo seems far away to be labelled as minor drops because there isn't anything of particularly demanding imo to justify such leaps in FPS. Let me explain: most of the area is quite dark, static and claustrophobic; the only scenes which shows some actions, or with a more "opened" and illuminated spot, exhibited unstable fps. It's not a good sign for now and Capcom has the terrible precedent to release prebuilt code with the same perfomance of the final game. Hope to be wrong and let's see the next final demo.

Performance mode here even if resolution is 1080p (FullHD user here).
Yeah. Shadow of the colossus on pro, 1080p vs the 30fps mode... the 30fps mode looked like absolute dog shit in comparison lol.

I will probably always choose 60fps mode no matter what this gen, unless it's a huge difference and the game doesn't really require 60fps.

That is why I said if they can keep the same performance while adding all the real gameplay with explosions, weapons, multiple enemies and more.

Average frame rate was 59.2fps in the demo, 5th percentile frame rate was 55fps meaning that 95% of the time frame rate is higher than 55fps.
For me it wasn't bad at all although there was the rough spot with the lady with all the flies.

That was the only actual rough spot.
Hopefully they have polished the game more and frame rate will stick more closely to 60fps but given that all the gameplay stuff that will be added compared to the Maiden demo is only going to make the game more intensive to run, I doubt that they will be able to deliver a totally flawless 60fps, not with the demo graphical presets.
Of course I'm hoping for the best but we'll see next week when the second demo should be released.

If RE2 and RE3 is anything to go by expect drops.

Damn.

Honestly sometimes I'm not crazy about the option cuz then I'll feel like I'm either missing better visuals or fluidity.

For games like Control an improved framerate is definitely the way to go but stuff like WD Legion and RE8 aren't as fast paced so maybe the better visuals are worth it.

I advertised for Google Stadia
Depends if it's completely one way. If not then it will be debatable.
Don't worry, guys.
PS5, SX, both will be far too expensive for a cross gen game ;)

Stadia and GFN win.
At least, we won't have to pay 300 to 500 bucks to play it ho ho ho.

Wish they just made it next gen only, but from a business standpoint makes sense the route they've taken.

Atleast the next installment will look bonkers considering how well the RE engine scales

Frame Rate Statistics
17Mean Frame Rate59.2fps
18Median Frame Rate60fps
19Maximum Frame Rate60fps
20Minimum Frame Rate46fps
215th Percentile Frame Rate55fps
221st Percentile Frame Rate51fps
Again what I'm trying to point out here the demo is a long scripted corridor most of the time, 55fps of average in such scenario isn't it exactly something to celebrate especially with an hit even at 46 FPS when there is more action and you encounter just a girl who flies. Can you imagine what could happen in a more open area with multiple enemies?

Average is 59.2fps not 55fps though. 55fps is the 5th percentile meaning that 95% of the time frame rate is higher than 55fps.
But as I said I agree with your point, infact I said that for me it will be good if they can keep the same graphical/performance profile of the demo ONLY WITH the full gameplay added to it (explosions, weapons, multiple enemies and such).
Sadly I do not expect a flawless 60fps experience given what happened in previous RE games (there will be drops when the action becomes packed) unless there are many customizations options including one with ray tracing off at 60fps.
We'll see soon enough, hopefully I'm surprised.

Nah, everything has to be 60, maybe with a 30fps mode for those who want to suffer.

There is no reason for 30 fps with the hardware in these machines... Give me1080p if you have to, but no more 30fps BS, I'll tolerate it in existing ps4 games.

Performance mode ❤️ (unless the resolution is way too low, like 1080p)
Kinda funny, i been using a 32 Samsung 720p TV for 10 years or so and think games still look lovely on it, from ALL systems Wii U, 360, Switch to PS4..

This week finally changed to a 1080p slightly bigger tv, im more concerned about sub native res than overall outpout. thats why i got 1080, But would never say 1080 feels too low 🤷‍♂️ depending on the size i guess.
