Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced that Monster Hunter Rise for Nintendo Switch has shipped 5 million units worldwide.

The Monster Hunter series consists of hunting action games that pit players against giant monsters in a beautiful natural environment. Beginning with the first title in 2004, the series established a new genre in which players cooperate to hunt ferocious monsters with their friends and has since grown into a global phenomenon with cumulative sales of the series exceeding 66 million units shipped as of December 31, 2020.

My bad if posted before.

I think the difference is that shipped means that they (the manufacturer) have sent them to retailers locations but they may not actually have been sold by the retailer whereas sold means the retailer really sold to end customers.

AFAIK they always include digital, as well. Was the same PR for World iirc.

Been a while since a third party game sold so well on a Nintendo system right? The Switch really is an exceptional platform for software sales. Wonder if it'll motivate other third party developpers to put as much effort as Capcom with their Switch titles.

It’s definitely the best lately (and by far). Other third party games above the two million mark include among us, Mario rabbids and Minecraft. And two of those aren’t even exclusive

Kinda crazy when Monster Hunter Rise is closing to surpass FF7R total sales in less than a month of release lol, especially when comparing the hype and media attentions toward those two games.

That's why the high sell through number is important to measure whether the shipment of the game is really in a big demand or not.

For comparison
FF7R launch shipments(3 days) = 3.5M
After ~4.5 months of sales = 5M

MHR launch shipments(3 days) = 4M
After 10 days = 5M

With this it becomes Capcom's 9th best selling game ever (8th is Street Fighter V with 5.2M shipped units), and the best selling MH game after MHW and Iceborne.

What is the source for these FF numbers?

A slight correction for the date, it should be around 3.5 months as FF7R was delayed to april.

It's not crazy if you are popular and well done game action series like monster hunter. The attention is huge,Stop with this fake post.

Companies almost always use shipped as that is the figure they have the most visibility over. For retail sell through they have to rely on trackers like media create and NPD I guess.

If you build an audience on Nintendo systems you will reap the rewards, just the same as a Sony or Microsoft system.

Rise will help, but at this point Switch's software sales are clear to those who want to see them. Companies like EA, Capcom, Activision and Konami have noticed and adapted their strategy. Others like Bandai Namco have not adapted and I'm not convinced Rise will change their minds.

Could never get into MH Worlds because the combat felt clunky like the attacks don't track with the enemy? but I forced myself into this one and it's been reeeally good. Just beat Magnamalo for the first time and about to start the level 3 missions.

Surprised the game runs so well too - even online considering Hyrule Warriors ran like petrified shit

Well deserved, I am enjoying the heck out of it right now, together with friends and family. It's really one of those games where once you pick up the controller, it's really hard to put it down again.

Wirebug mechanic is a game changer quite literally.

This is what happens when you have a great in-house engine and tooling you understand well and put some of your best technical artists and developers to work on it paired by a committed art department and an art director that understands what the platform can do. Add the right amount of development time and experimentation allowing developers to find the best compromises and you have a great title with a very cohesive art/settings.

This is an overplayed distinction. As far as Capcom is concerned, they are sold. There's usually very little difference between shipped and sold. Retailers aren't buying stuff that isn't selling.

A bit off topic but I've been considering jumping back into MHW/Iceborn on Ps4.
Am I late to the party? Or do you think the servers may be up for some time yet?

5m in 10 days.
2.5m in Japan... we will know how it fares in second week with World... they were tied in first week with 2m each.
2.5m outside Japan... that is where the big drop happened... 40-50% drop compared with World.

Interesting that a Switch only game does just as well as a PS4 + XBO game did in Japan but not everywhere else combined.

MHW PS4+XBO in Japan ltd = 3.1M
MHR NSW ltd = 2.5M

MHR only needs around 700K to outsell it which could be easily achieved in a few weeks.
?

There is no World Xbox version in Japan.

First week World: 2 million
First week Rise: 2 million

Second week World: 2.25m + what it sold digitally in 2nd week
Second week Rise: 2.5m

Worldwide sales in the same timeframe

Monster Hunter Rise
Japan =
\approx
2.5 million
West =
\approx
2.5 million

Monster Hunter World
Japan =
\approx
2.5 million
West =
\approx
3.5 million

So that means we have a reduction in western sales from 3.5 million to 2.5 million sales.

q = 2.5million/3.5million - 1
q = 0,75 - 1
q = -0.28,57 x 100
q = - 28,57%

reduction of 28.57%

MHR ~4M
MHW ~5M

7 days
MHR ~5M
MHW ~??

14 days
MHR ~??
MHW ~6M

MHR numbers would be closer to 6M in the same timeframe as MHW(14 days) based on how fast the shipment sales reported by Capcom.

this part gives me a huge "huh??"

It would mean it took MHW 11 days for an additional million, while it took MHR 4 days for an additional million.

Exactly.

High sell through Means fast sales rate.

An example of over shipped game.

FFXV
3 days = 5.5M
1 year and 1 month =7M

I am curious what number MHR has after 14 days because I then can calculate the drop in the west compared to MHW. The 40-50% number that gets thrown around here is definitely wrong.

Reduction after 3 days was at 33.3%.
