Game Pass vs $70: The ‘MLB The Show’ Xbox Deal Is A Bad Look For Sony [Forbes article]

Also, PSVR2 is coming too, could be the thing that really makes Playstation stand out from Xbox and Gamepass.

From all the rumblings going around, it seems Microsoft/Xbox is becoming more open to idea of VR, but they will be allowing players to use any VR headset in the market, just like on PC. That would be a vastly superior ecosystem than forcing everyone to buy only one in-house VR headset at a premium.

At first I thought this was a joke. Then I saw your post history and realized you're serious....

Holy shit you made me check his post history because I thought it was a sarcastic joke. The arguments were utterly ridiculous, but hy shit he really means it.

I was literally dead at the "the superior version that their superior input interface offers", but finding out it probably was serious...

Some people are just beyond redemption.

Do you think they could put the game on PSNow, or PSPLus, and take the financial hit for the good PR?.
I wouldnt be totally surprised. Sometimes good PR is worth more than money.
PSNow doesn’t have the gamepass numbers so it wouldn’t make sense really

"Extremely successful" lol

So sucessful that they wont even show how profitable it is. "But trust me, bro"

Sony put the price at $70 because people buy them anyway. Again, vot with your wallet.

What MS is doing is basicaly subsidizing with Game Pass. So of course its good for customers, but it wont last.
It's their strategy because they are at 3rd place and they have deep pockets.
No competitor, Sony or Nintendo will do the same, because they are not fucking idiots.

Sony may offer a similar service but it will be much worse since they wont put 1st party titles at launch and moneyhat 3rd party support.
People like you are extremely pathetic and salty. Just say you are a damn fanboy get it over with. So sick of your kind. Also Microsoft doesn’t have to tell anyone anything. Trust me if the program wasn’t profitable. Xbox would not be focusing that much into Gamepass and even getting day 1 titles. Like shut the hell up bro and keep licking that boot.

Who knew the last gasp attempt at fanboyism is being an armchair accountant for a service neither Sony or MS even bothers disclosing themselves in quarterly reports. These things are lumped into some bucket which nobody except them know the details.

But when you got something unknown and left for imagination, it leaves the console warrior an open window to keep the fight going.

Notice how Sony doesn't disclose profits of PS Now either, but he never brings that up in any PS thread.

Unfortunately VR doesn’t work with streaming, and that’s the ultimate end goal in MS’s mind. VR gets in the way of the billion user strategy so they will deliberately distance themselves from it and advocate against it.

I just want to point out that the true price hike from last gen is $40 because the full game is $100.

Dont know for certain but i'm pretty sure the Gamepass version will be just the standard version. Apart from a few exceptions, all Gamepass games are the standard edition. Its probably cheaper getting these deals for Gamepass doing it that way, then publishers can still make money from dlc and mtx.

Totally. It's usually the vanilla copy.

It's a bad look for sure. Sony seems to be giving itself a lot of bad looks these days. I mean, their response to GamePass was to INCREASE MSRP on their games to $70... great idea guys. I just wonder if Ryan really has a grasp on what it takes to run a gaming division. It's fine now, because no one can get a console and there isn't shit to play anyway, but at some point, these developers are going to want to start making money again, and some of these decisions are going to seem suspect imo. Don't get me wrong, I think Gamepass is highly, highly overrated, but slightly less so now that you can get the newest version of a Sony exclusive franchise on Day 1 for free. Sony better get its act together.

Embarassing post, calling names and etc.

Anyway, I'm not a Sony fanboy. I also have a Switch that I play way more than my PS4. And I'm very critical about Sony $70 exclusives, lack of BC and etc.

Just look up my post history: not a fanboy by any means

I'm just honest: Game Pass is wonderful, but it doesnt make sense financially right now, and MS is only able to support it right now because they have infinite money.

"Trust me, if the program wasnt profitable Xbox wouldnt be focusing that much into GP" yadda yadda

Here's the thing: they want to get as much userbase they can in order to increase the price latter on. This is a common tactics for subscription services: loose money when implemented to get userbase, increase price latter on.

Plus, their future games will be "platforms" for GaaS (Halo, Forza, and probably Fable), so they can get some money back from microtransactions.

Now, take a deep breath, and come back latter to continue the discussion like grown ups

Makes sense. A lot of Sony fans don't understand how the modern world works. That's part of the reason why they are so bitter.
That's because Sony leadership, marketing and fellow Sony fans are told to think a certain way, even though Sony themselves open up the door to alternatives.

So if Sony does PS Now (which even includes PS Now access on a PC!) and PC ports, you'd think a core PS fan would be agreeable. Get more sales and more people play their games. Sony even made a new Sony studio to handle multiplats.

Yet the exclusive angle for years breaks down with PC PS Now, "more games coming to PC later" and recent ports including MLB 21 on Xbox.

So they don't know what to think as the walled garden is crumbling.

What if The Show is released on Gamepass earlier on launch day than on Playstation Store, and the download rate is faster? How will Sony respond? Does that constitute a failure of leadership and indeed a loss of the Mandate of Heaven?

So do any of these "writers" (at this point it's just plain shilling for a corporation) actually ask any questions? Do they really think this decision was up to Sony? Have they ever even wondered why the game is finally on the Xbox platform after ALLLLL these years?

People also said this 3 years ago too. Maybe it'll just stay in rumorland forever.

This franchise isn't worth the headache for Sony. They should assign a skeleton team to churn out annual full-price roster updates for the duration of the MLB contract and start transitioning the rest of the studio over to some other IP.

Or just release future installments as DLC to get around Gamepass.

Absolutely a bad look for Sony.

Does not affect me- I have a PS5 and a Series X w/Gamepass. The situation is actually great for me, I was actually getting ready to plunk down $70 for PS5 version, and just learned I now don't have to. But if I just had PS5, yeah I'd be pissed, being the guy who has supported this platform, and game series over the years, and now they suddenly give the game to the competition for "free".

I do almost feel like Sony should either put it on PSNow, or even more aggressively- make a PS+ free game to save face, because they really don't look good here and they are giving a lot of people currently having a hell of a time finding a PS5 a very compelling reason to go find a Series X or S instead.

But, you know, PS5 is still BEYOND sold out and will be for foreseeable future, so maybe they don't give a shit.

Companies aren’t required to do anything unless they are forced to do so, that’s how businesses work. Also if history has taught us ANYTHING about how Microsoft works, if something isn’t as profitable as people claim. Microsoft doesn’t give a fuck and will shut down the program. Same goes with companies like Google.

Man your posts really are making me question my memory (which is bad to be fair). Didnt Phil literally just come out a coupl;e of months ago and say there will be no Bethesda games coming to Playstation, outside of ones that already exist, or ones that already have a contract (like those 2 Bethesda games already coming to PS5)?

Yes he did but we still have certain people keeping that pathetic hope alive. 🤡 🌎

It wasn't up to Sony but Sony definitely got outplayed here. MS is using a Playstation Studios game to show how much value Game Pass has. This wasn't just a coincidence... MS actively made this deal happen so the press and influencers could shine a spotlight on this.

Sony will make way more money selling a brand new game for $60 than Xbox throwing games on gamepass. Majority of gamepass users aren't buying new games when you can play them for a dollar

Xbox is becoming a publisher. Charging nothing but a sub to play new $60 games, is burning money.

Sony got paid for it to be on gamepass I'm sure... It gives gamepass subscribers like myself who never played it to see how great it is and possibly by it once it's eventually not on gamepass any longer. In the long term will likely be good for sony expanding the fan base for that game along with xbox possibly increasing the popularity and benifits of gamepass. So.... Win win for everyone?
This is too logical of a take man! Come on, join the fanboy console wars :messenger_tears_of_joy: fuel the flames...

I personally don't get it, those on PS who love this game knew they'd have to buy this game... was there any doubt they were going to have to? Some of the biggest fans of this game only play this game. Their friend group plays this game an game like it aka sports game. For those on Xbox with GP that's a great deal, great bonus game! Hopefully (like you said) next year, if the new game is no longer on GP, they'll buy it since it was such a great experience. That was probably the goal for MLB and Sony.

Yep Sony should put this on PS PLUS because MS made a dick move and forced their hands.

This would be the game to do it with because it only sells a million a year so it's not a big earner. This game can't even keep an OT and every thread I've ever seen on it had zero interest and few replies.

Since MLB stance is the game needs to be available on all platforms they should also drop it and let their developer do other projects.

Lol well somebody has to be logical here 😂😂😂. I enjoy some of the fanboy wars and trolls here but most of it lately is horrible. The worst part about it is some people post something so illogical you automatically assume they are trolling or joking.... But they be serious. However back on topic... I hope this game has a connected franchise like madden get some friends together and start a league. If it's good I'll likely buy the game sooner or later.

How did they get "outplayed"? I'm 100% sure Sony is reaping more profit from this game at the moment. And in the event the deal looks too bad for Sony, I'm about 90% sure they'll stop making the game and will close down the studio for good. Meaning.......MS losing the game in a couple years anyway (IF the deal is just too bad for Sony).

This is the confirmation that even Sony Computer Entertainment believes that Game Pass is a great Service!

The next Video Game on Game Pass developed by a Sony Computer Entertainment Studio should be Horizon: Forbidden West.

Thanks, Jim Ryan ;)

You say that but the effort MS has put into GwG for a while is more embarrassing than MS getting The Show on to GP. We all knew it was coming to Xbox a while back, so it isn't a massive shock that they've chucked a large bag of cash to get it onto GP day one.

You're right. I am sure Microsoft saw the circumstances (with MLB acting as publisher of the Xbox One/Series X/S versions), and decided to make this happen. It was a very calculated tactic.

I really don't care even a single bit about this game, but yeah, Sony really needs to put this on PS+ or Now to not look completely stupid in this situation.

I agree. They'd take a bit of a financial hit now, but it's necessary for them to remain in favor with their user base.

People keep spewing crap about gamepass being unsustainable but yet have zero access to the revenue being generated and the costs involved. What a bunch of armchair quarterbacks. It should be pretty obvious by now, thst ms believes that once they hit critical mass in terms of subscribers, they expect it will not only be sustainable, but also very profitable. Do you really think one of the most profitable companies in the world decided to spend 5 billion dollars on zenimax on a failing business model? Time to wake up.

I'm not talking about how Sony is gonna make the most money, I'm talking about how bad it looks that a game developed by THEM is free on a competing subscription service but not on their own. They need to take the financial hit to save face here, to make it seem like they give a shit about PlayStation owners.
