MLB The Show 21 is coming to Game Pass on day 1 (April 20)

Even if MS only kept 1/8th of Gamepass subscribers as full game players, they matched Sonys sales for the last couple years.

I don’t think the numbers will be that bad.

Show on Xbox not publish by Sony.

MLB corporation is the publisher.

So deal made between MS and MLB for game pass. Sony has no say in this deal. They don't own MLB, just developer of the game.

Unfortunately, I also feel that MLB The Show will just turn into another derivative, stale sports franchise. This year's version looks barely upgraded. There's zero next gen features, and the animations haven't been meaningfully improved in ages.

There's probably less incentive for Sony to really make a standout, world class baseball game now that they are the only game in town and will sell on every platform.

Which is very unfortunate for the series.
This doesn't hold too well considering many of the highest-rated games in the industry are third-party. Hell, the #1 publisher of 2020 by review score aggregate is third-party (SEGA).

I could even argue that a game being exclusive can give LESS incentive to make it top-of-class; if you know it's going to be exclusive to simply one platform, and fans of that platform are starved for content, you can probably get by with lowered standards simply knowing gamers will buy it anyway because what other real options do they have on that platform for the time being?

It's a very extreme example and doesn't happen too often, but just look at Nintendo's lazy port of Skyward Sword for Switch; literal bare minimum porting effort but it'll sell like gangbusters because Nintendo diehards will support almost any game with Nintendo's name on it especially if it's from one of the big franchises like Zelda.

Sony is of course part of the deal as the developer and had a say. I think Sony is making some good money out of this.

Is it the right move? Different question but I think this looks like a good one for everyone involved.

I won't be dumping Sony, but I can say from browsing Twitter and Reddit for a while seem to be plenty of players who have been willing to cancel preorders on their playstations since it's basically "free" on GP.

Also just pointing out since GAF seems to forget they aren't the majority, but to sports gamers this is a potential huge deal as many only buy 3 or so sports games a year and this move could easily take somebody who buys a Sony system into the other park because it's basically free.

I don't think this has as much to do with it being MLB, it has to do with Playstation gamers being annoyed that they appear to be getting the short end of the stick from a game/franchise that is known for and made by a Sony studio.

Sorry but the hardcore MLB gamers will mostly buy it instead of renting it. It won’t stay forever on GP. This the same with Flightsim, the hardcore won’t use GP for this but will get it on steam so they own the game.

no risk of it randomly disappearing though as long as you have a sub

GamePass titles are cycled

Not by random and they give notice before something leaves so you have time to buy it for 20% off if you want to own it. There is zero option to buy a PS+ game to own if you end your sub.

If it’s free for a whole year and the next game is free Again?

What did they lose?

Again even if it’s only free for 6 months, if they are serious about the game it will be at 50%+ off before it leaves Gamepass. Going by history.

They don’t lose anything by getting it on Gamepass, and can enjoy a ton of other games while checking it out.

What does your 70.00 on PS5 get you?

If the measure of success is the number of players then Sony might as well turn this game into free-to-play. Putting this game on PS Plus should also be an easy decision if Sony feels threatened by this move. But I doubt this will even make Sony flinch.

I don't play this game so I don't really care. If it releases on PS Plus one day, maybe I'll give it a try.

Of course they have a legal right, Sony can just stop making The Show and re-org the studio into making other types of games or supporting other studios.

That’s not in anyone’s best interest though. Yes, there are unknowns, but it’s not rocket science to see that Sony is getting something out of this arrangement. It’s their studio.
Legal right to stop making the game or stop the gamepass deal?. Again you making the assumption that the license allows Sony to break it so easily.

It gives me a game i can focus on, instead of wasting my time “checking” tons games. I play a few games on Pc/console so i can focus on them. Also not every retailer sells the games for 70 at launch. I’ve never payed that amount of money.

Must be nice to be so simple.

I know sports is a hard game to focus on. The constant rule changes and gameplay updates can be a lot for a person to handle.

Hopefully Xbox makes it easy for the simpletons to understand.

As long as they play goalie well enough they can dribble down the court and get a one timer for a touchdown. Right?

I didn’t mentioned sportgames, but games in general for that price. I don’t buy sportgames and i don’t care about games sub services.

Your reply to me was specifically about MLB (which you say you don’t care about) coming to Gamepass (which you say you don’t care about)

So why are you in a thread about a game you don’t care about coming to a service you don’t care about?

Did you get lost? Or do you actually care?

Perhaps read my first response again. That's where I'm talking about MLB. My response after that is general.

You bother to read the title of the thread you are in?

Or are you trying to purposely derail it?

You don’t care about the game or the service, what other purpose does your opinion serve?

none

whats your point? My second response was about that €70, was not directly related to MLB, but what i do with that money. Eveyone can discuss in this thread...heck the majority here doesn’t even care about MLB. Maybe you should go after everyone then.

who do you think you are? Coming to tell me what I should and should not do.

I’m not going to derail this any longer.

If you have a problem find me in a different thread that is more on topic or DM me.

Neither mine or your shitty option is better than the topic at hand.

As someone who buys and plays Pro Evo yearly and loves football above all else... no.

Sports games decrease in value like no other games. There’s literally no benefit to paying £60 on launch. There’s a 12 month ticking timer until the next one comes out, and once the 12 month mark hits, the last game will be worth 50p.

Due to this 12 month window, they also come down in cost quicker than any other game. FIFA and PES release in Aug/Sep at full price and are on sale for £20 come Christmas. Like clockwork.

To maximise MTX; PES also give away a free lite edition on Xbox and PS, and Konami slapped PES on Game Pass quite quickly the last 2 years.

To put it bluntly, no one with a brain enjoys spending full price on any sports games.

Crazy this got to to 16 pages. Can't wait for the OT which will reach about 2, from the 4/5 people on gaf that actually play it. Wonder if gamepass will tempt enough people to try it and enter that OT. Will be a good metric I guess.

Please explain it to me as I'm not seeing the advantage of a subscription service, but how is it good for gaming with Game Pass making games like this available day 1? Obviously you still have to pay for the subscription, and I realize it is cheaper than owning the game for a few months at least, but you are still only borrowing the game and not really owning it. Don't renew your subscription and you can't play. What am I missing? Am I just not moving with the times? I know games can still be purchased owning game pass as well...

PS+ owners have never had an issue with this in regards to the playstation plus games they download, or anything else like Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, disney+ etc. They only seem to be confused when it comes to gamepass 🤔

It is pretty weird. Sony game launching on Gamepass day 1, but not on PS+/PSNow... that does put into question just what the hell are Jim and his team thinking? Is the idea here that PlayStation customers won’t know about it?

Baffling

Maybe this is something that MLB did and not Sony?

In what way do you mean? The Xbox port has been known for a while, MLB publishing it might have been part of the deal. Maybe Sony was convinced there was no money to be made there and MLB said we'll pay for the port and handle the distribution.

@93xfan, it would probably have to be a licensed game of some sort. LOL
Well I was thinking because Sony made it, MLB went about the deal with MS day one on gamepass without letting Sony know. Doesn't feel right. Why would Sony be ok with them making a game and it being available day one for cheaper on their competitor's console?

Of course Sony are getting paid by MLB (the publisher) to make the Xbox version.

The deal between Microsoft and MLB to have this launch on gamepass day one has nothing to do with Sony though. I doubt that it will have anything to do with the contract that exists between Sony and MLB regarding payments or anything else.

A cut from what? Was the contract signed between MLB and Sony a lump sum or a percentage of every game sold?

Sony ( or San Diego, whatever) will get a cut of each copies sold on every platform, even if is on Gamepass, so yes, Sony surely got a cut of Gamepass deal.

Perhaps it's so sony can show sales numbers to mlb and say "look! Nobody on xbox wants to buy it, there's no point in making another one"
You're probably not far off. It's likely the fact that they received little to no preorders on xbox and they need to gain some money as they are developing it on xbox too now. The franchise isn't established at all there and MLB games aren't huge already. Some deal to get it on gamepass would be the outcome there. Seems weird from the consumer perspective but I'm sure it makes sense financially for the studio making it.

It's what they do from here that's important though and what the deal was. Is it going to be filled with microtransactions, would it maintain playtime and the deal is based on that, or are they getting exposure on the platform just this one time.

I have to wonder how much of the game going multi platform was due to the MLB and licensing agreements. Far as I am aware sporting leagues like NFL and FIFA for example, demand as much exposure and non exclusivity; this prevents EA from making exclusive deals for consoles. It doesn't stop them from making sweeter dealers like Game Pass.

It's also possible that Sony, didn't dream this was something Microsoft would negotiate. Maybe Microsoft schooled Sony on this game. Or maybe it was out of Sony hands.

I just hope the developers got taken care of to some degree, for possible poor unit sales on Play station, at least below expectations. If there was some sort of cash exchange between Microsoft and MLB, hopefully it didn't just all go to one of these two.

One step closer to a Sony and Microsoft shared console... make life easy for everyone.

Prediction: There will be big news at PlayStations E3 showcase this year.

Sony has no choice but to respond.

Yeah they have to.
And Jim Ryan was once asked about their response to Gamepass and he said "we have some news to share in the coming months".

I don't think they have to respond at all really? I just hope they keep pumping out first party hits that shift units and Xbox keep doing what they do so that both are successful. I'd hate for Sony to drop the ball and Xbox to revert to 'Xbox one E3 reveal conference' on us again.

Competition is best for everyone. I don't see me getting a PS5 this generation until a revision but I want them to be successful doing their own thing, not imitating gamespass.

Its the same with performance threads.....the vs thread will be 30+ pages the OT and general threads talking about the game?
Tribalism gets the most attention even for games people dont actually care about.

Case in point

But don't care baseball game.. i'm on EU :p

Hell i dont actually care about MLB but now ill give it a go cuz its "free" it constantly reviews well so might as well try it right?
Just in this thread really to drink tears.

As a playstation fan of the game, this isn't a good look. Makes one question why even buy it on a playstation platform when have other platforms with the game at a huge advantage from a consumer standpoint.

Thanks Jim 👀

Sort of. My guess is they will take it off gamepass either right before or after the playoffs. Which will force Xbox users such as myself to decide if I want to fork over a most likely lightly discounted price to continue playing diamond dynasty of franchise.

Essentially an industry perfect double dip imo.

We don't know what happened, it's all just speculation. Sony is still handling the PS version as they always have, making this payday a bonus for them. I doubt they are going to quit making this game because of it, LOL. But it really wouldn't be out of the ordinary. It's normal for the publisher to handle decisions like this.

That's why you have developers switching publishers and sometimes you can tell that bridges were burned by what the devs say etc. Sometimes the publisher might make decisions that the dev doesn't particularly like at the end of the day.

It’s also a yearly sports title gradually falling in price and goes on multiple sales during the year. It’s even been a free PS+ game in October.
