MLB The Show 21 is coming to Game Pass on day 1 (April 20)

Are you fucking kidding me? It's a direct slap in the face to the PlayStation fan base.

MLB The Show being made by Sony and going to Xbox was already embarrassing enough in the first place. But now, Sony are allowing Microsoft to directly leech off of their Studio's content and put the content into their rental service while it's $70 on ps5? Are you fucking kidding me?

What are they even thinking anymore? This is embarrassing as fuck and Jim Ryan and current sony leadership is bringing PlayStation down to xbox's level. Every other day I wake up now it's Xbox dunking on PlayStation PR humiliating them, and now it's a Sony Studio being grabbed by the balls by microsoft and allowing gamepass to leech off of them. Unbelievable. This is fucked up

imagine how much money M$ gave to Sony to release it on GP.

btw guys this is all business dont know why u look all surprised.
They may not of given Sony any money for this, as its the MLB that is publishing the Xbox version.
Besides you simply cant buy PR like this today, and IF money was exchanged, Microsoft will think its more than worth it.

I'm not playing outriders or MLB and I'm not going to buy Returnal now either..... what Jim Ryan and all the other clowns running PS must realize is, that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

It doesn't feel fair that he is charging 80 euro for new games and giving away once exclusives to the competing platform to be played at 15 dollars or less.

I won't be buying any more games on PS5 till this changes and if it continues to get worse on PS5, I'm just moving to PC. I won't even sell on the PS5's, I'll just box them up so nobody can buy games for them.
Cope.

I'd guess that Sony definitely got some dollars out of the GP deal, just because the publishing deal between them and MLB probably has a certain amount of profit sharing worked into it. Whether or not they have any say in how MLB markets/sells the game etc. would depend on the agreements they have. Probably MLB can do whatever the hell they want with it outside of PS and Sony gets a set percentage of any revenues generated.

How much do you want to bet that Xbox day 1 player count will be larger than Playstation?

Pretty interesting move by all parties involved. To me I feel like this is an opening for both MS and Sony to further explore bringing PSNow to Xbox (via app or browser) and for Game Pass to come to Playstation. They can also publish their games on each system.

This has nothing to do with being a "fanboy" but everything to do with optics and respect to people who invested in your ecosystem.

The LEAST they can do is give away the stupid baseball game for Ps Plus or something or try to get forza or Star Field out of a deal with microsoft. Because right now it's constantly just looking like this:

- Take away ability to purchase & rent movies
- Charge $70 for first party games
- Port Sony first party games to pc with graphical enhancements that don't exist on the console version
- Allow microsoft to take away Bethesda games without doing anything really in response (yet)
- terrible changes made to the psn party system
- shutting down ps3, ps vita stores without offering a viable backwards compatibility solution for those games
- and now allowing mlb and Microsoft to leech off of their third party talent

Uhh returnal better be a home run, because right now things are LOOKING dire. Every other day microsoft are slam-dunking them it's like they've gotten so complacent and out of touch

They'd have to recieve something. They're fronting the development cost

He was saying they gave the money to MLB since they are the publisher for Xbox and that’s who the deal would be through.

It’s then up to MLB to pass a portion of the money onto Sony depending on what their deal looks like.

The deal was already in place for the game to come to Xbox, it was done months ago, with MLB publishing the Xbox version. Microsoft then paying the MLB more money to put the game on Gamepass has nothing to do with Sony now.

Of course to does. They have co rights to the games. They can't just recieve zero fincancial gain

I don't think I was saying otherwise. I was making the distinction between development and game pass. Sony would have to know about developing the game since their team was going to work on it. Game Pass could be a secret deal which could influence what Sony does. But I don't think that will happen.
Sorry can't go into what's going on.

The funniest part of this whole thing is literally nothing has changed for people that were going to play this on Playstation.

You had to pay 70.00 for it yesterday and you have to pay 70.00 for it today. It’s literally the same deal it always was.

This is a huge shot fired with the Xbox getting a Sony title on gamepass while PS suckers have to pay full price. MS is brilliant and has me seriously considering a Xbox X now since I can’t find a damn ps5 anyways.

This is hilarious I’m sorry

I'm not so sure. Maybe we will learn the info soon enough. Besides, even $10mil would be peanuts for this kind of PR, and it wont be close to that number anyway.

It just doesn't make any sense at all.

Sony agreed to put the game on Xbox and gets a cut of the sales, but gets nothing from the gamepass deal which will affect the sales of the game?

Nah, that type of stuff has to be negiotated.

I think that Sony obviously didn't have much to say about this.
Last year they were faced with the decision to either go multiplatform with the game or lose the license to some big multiplatform publisher like EA or whatever.
Then MLB (as a publisher) and MS made deals behing the scenes to bring the game day one on GP.

For MS this makes a lot of sense and was an excellent move since they boosted the Gamepass lineup, allowed the fanbase to try something new for them without having to buy it in the classic way and of course they put Sony in an awkward situation PR wise because now their fanbase has to pay for something that you can get in a subscription service elsewhere and it's one of their games.
Not to mention that a lot of people are not so instructed on the business side of things to understand what happened and they might simply think that Sony wants their fans to pay 70$ while they're actively giving the game away on a competing platform.
So yeah I guess that Sony was a bit naive in how they handled the situation PR wise and they'll probably have some discussions about what happened and who made the contracts :messenger_tears_of_joy:
And I don't think they're putting this on PS+ or Now as form of retaliation, that would just be falling in an other trap to let people think that these games can be given away for free anytime (while there are a lot of money and deals involved) and the Gamepass business model is better.
They'll just let it slide, preparing for answers later.

Well i mean why are MLB publishing the game on Xbox and not Playstation?. As far as we know Microsoft may of paid a lump sum for the game, and it was all settled. Then thats out of the way and they go to the people actually publishing the xbox version and get a deal for Gmepass.
It all depends on the details of the orig deal. I just find it very interesting that its not Sony publishing the game on Xbox.
And like i said, any money given will be seen as a coup for this type of PR.

MLB may be the last game I buy for quite some time after this, and only sticking with it cause it's my most played game last year, but as a Sony gamer these last two moves are crap for us. I know many here don't actually play sports titles, but MLB is a system seller on the playstation and has been for years, so it's not like this was some little indy game that who cares about hitting GP. I'm expected to drop 70-100 bucks while Xbox guy who wasn't going to buy the game gets to play it for basically free...and I'm not supposed to be upset about that?

I'm not sure if ALL the blame here should be on Jim, but he's done enough....or I guess not enough not to be kicked to the curb. I don't hate Gamepass, but I've been a game player/collector since the NES era, I like owning my stuff and I don't need a library of games to choose from to try something new, I have them on shelves to try, and while it may seem dumb of me, I skipped Outriders that I was going to buy because of the Gamepass deal, why should I spend money on a game that the other guys get for free? By the time Outriders leaves gamepass there won't be a playerbase anyway so it's not like these cheap fucks are actually buying every GP game they enjoy, I can't see why I should foot the full price bill to play the game on my Playstation.

I think you'll see more and more resentment from PS fans (myself included) towards Sony for this, in what you said the opposite reaction. Getting fucking Oddworld is not the same as you letting a big Sony game like MLB end up on GP.

Optics just aren't good right now if you play on Playstation, but that's enough of my rant. I'll still play a ton of the game, but can't see myself buying any of their AA overpriced games like Returnal if this is the way they are gonna keep treating us.

**Please MLB new fans, don't look at this being free and buy stubs instead, this game is NOT Madden Ultimate Team, you can get every card in the game with no extra money spent**

Man this gif reminds me how the tables have turned. I remember the legendary meme thread here on gaf. In just under a year, Xbox went from being a laughing stock to this. Fascinating stuff. So many missteps by Sony that MS has taken full advantage of. What a turn around. Now it's Sony fans who are laughing at their own favorite company.

I personally dont have any resentment towards xbox players getting it for free. or $10 or a $1 or whatever deal they have going on, but I wont judge others for having it.

What do I feel shortchanged by is the lack of next gen upgrades from a first party sony studio. It is simply unacceptable that this first party studio who likely had access to devkits a year before other third party studios, and an extra 6 months of dev time after the launch of the console, did not include any visual enhancements outside of a simple 4k 60 fps mode. If I cant expect next gen upgrades from a first party game then how can I expect it from third party devs?

Not to mention the fact that third parties killed it with the next gen upgrades. The frostbite hair looks absolutely mindblowing. They even upgraded the character models. NBA redid everything. New open world modes, entirely new courtside detail and presentation, new slicker menus, on top of character models and other graphical upgrades. And yet because Sony San Diego were forced to release not one but 4 xbox versions of the game, that meant the PS5 owners, the loyal fanbase that has stuck by this franchise ever since EA lost the license in 2006 are now going to receive a shit version. For a $10 next gen markup.

Simply unacceptable.

Sony ain't the publisher it seems on xbox, if they aren't then they don't typically have the say on the commercial deals.

There are different kinds of publishing deals. Sometimes the publisher literally buys the game from the dev and the dev never gets another penny. Other times profit is shared but the dev has no say in how the publisher sells/markets the game. Still in other cases the dev retains some control over how the game can be sold, etc.

If Sony was in complete control of this port, they would have published it themselves (like MS has done on PS and Switch). The fact that MLB is publishing it hints at some loss of control. Sony brass could be completely livid over this deal and yet still get paid under the agreements in place. Or they could be pleased as punch, we don't know.

Yeah, just like the Bethesda acquisition & BC & Japan studio shutting down while Microsoft is growing their own Japanese one’s while Sony’s other subsidiary (Namely Sony music Japan) are either making exclusive games for the Switch (Emiya family) or completely multiplatform games (Kimetsu no Yaiba), overlapping the entire Sony gaming business with absolutely zero synergies or collaborative efforts like every single gaming company out there

lets face it, this whole shitshow pretty much began with this

BZ2pyFw.jpg

While the deal itself was good (as azure is competent for gaming) Keep in mind that SIE executives (PlayStation executives) were completely blindsided by this shitty deal, so there’s a big chance that Phil Spencer (who worked hard on The gaming aspect of Azure since 2014) was pretty much present in that deal that sealed the fate of the PS brand, WHILE NONE OF PS EXECUTIVES WERE (Which is why i think Shawn Layden left)

The reason why Sony Corp HQ in Japan did this was probably either that

1-Sony’s New CEO Kenichiro Yoshida wanted SIE to move on from Platform making into eventually becoming 3rd Party.

OR

2- He’s Seriously the most Spineless CEO I’ve ever seen lmao.

I knew it was right to get an xbox this gen. I'm not interested in this MLB game in particular but I knew xbox would be coming in hard with the bathesda purchase and gamepass push. I'm so glad I made this choice to switch.

If and when Sony comes out with some great announcements and Pro consumer services I'll happily switch back. I don't get why people tie themselves to one company.

Think you guys are too strung up on the fact that they're not publishing the Xbox version

They weren't the publishers for Death Stranding or Detroit either, but they're absolutely getting money from those
