MLB The Show 21 is coming to Game Pass on day 1 (April 20)

This is terrific. I had been looking for a PS5 or XSX and this was going to be the game I purchased along with either one, but I suppose I can instead settle for dusting off my X1X for this.

This is MLBs decision and in the end I believe what you said is right. Depending on how long Sony studios Contract is with the MLB, I can see Sony pulling out from production going forward.
I think that would only happen if this was done behind their backs which does not seem likely given it was a Sony studio who developed the Xbox version. Unless that is not the case?

It was weird being announced on GamePass, but the weirdest of all is being only there and not on PSNow too. To make things worse, GP will get the next gen update and Xcloud support.

It would make more sense to be at least on both services, or just like Microsoft did with Minecraft Dungeons: Game is on gamepass for Xbox and PC users, but has to be bought on Playstation (and Switch).

Unless they announce it will be on PSNow day and date, it gave an image of being thrown under the bus for a competitor. I wonder how this happened: Unless MLB was already offering deals to people outside of Sony and Microsoft had time enough to gather an Xbox port and GamePass release of whoever made the next game, or if they made these demands to Sony, or even if Sony did it themselves.

Absolutely. I meant EA or take2 would swoop in as soon as they could. MLB would have allowed 3rd party back in if Sony didn’t make the show available for x and Nintendo. They both could have made an mlb game whenever they wanted. The thing SDS never realizes is that with baseball, gameplay will always trump the graphics crap they put too much focus on. They always struggled delivering locked frame rates and a no lag online experience on top of the weird fielding issues. That’s a no-no for baseball. Now that they have all that next gen power, they’re introducing a stadium creator. At this point, 15 years in we should have 120fps batter pitcher interface and pitch recognition markers.
this will be my last gaf public post on this thread. we can dm each other on the subject but yes no one saw the numbers the license could bring. it was pretty much free to MS, sony, and Nintendo and no one bit. when it came to animations I think the entire point from the MLBs standpoint was to pump out a pretty game and not focus on what could be improved with animations. i have a buddy that is a die-hard MLB the show gamer and he states the same complaints you express.

I also live in Europe and everything in your post is bullshit. There are online queues for the XSX in every European online store, including the ones in my country and when the console appears it is sold out within minutes

Have fun paying 80€ (around 100$ for our American friends ) for games that I get for, almost , free on my XSX.

Anyway I don’t care about baseball, but gamepass in general is awesome,
Oh that's news to me. I didn't realise I could get the next god of war, horizon, gran turismo, ratchet and spiderman for almost free on Xbox. Because they're my next purchases. And I'll buy them on my American account to play on my EU account.

And incase you don't know that means I'm paying under €60 for brand new games not available on any other platform.

There's a reason MS is giving away everything for almost nothing. Because their full price games were selling like trash compared to Sony/Ninty and losing relevance. Not really any other option is there.

Gamestop in my country has the Series S all the time while the X sells out from time to time but compared to PlayStation it's getting spanked.

SDS did develop all platforms but any deals beyond the PS platform is not sonys business. the MLB is the license holder. so whatever deal was made between other platforms is none of sonys business

Just like Outriders....

Jim Ryan and the rest of the people running PS right now are fucking morons and that is putting it lightly.
They shit on their customers and longtime supporters.

I need to move to PC, I can't take this crap anymore.
I dont think Jim cares. The damage is already done with them announcing ports of all first party titles to PC. They dont care about losing money in the long run as long as they make money in the short term.

or, Sony hq doesnt see a long term future for gaming hardware and they are unwilling to enter into a money war with microsoft for the networked future. they are maximizing profits while they can. Ryan looks to be doing a good job at that..

anything digital from sony probably has a limited shelf life.

I think you're right. They're just trying to make as much money as they can while they can. I don't think PlayStation will exist 10 years from now under Sony. So that's why I think it's best I stop buying digitally from them. I can see apple or someone buying SIE

This reminds me of that deal the Sony CEO signed with Satya Nadella on the future of cloud gaming.

I wonder if this is Phil and Jim working together towards a single console or even worse single cloud future where they all force everyone into one ecosystem so that they all get a piece of the pie.

Here’s what probably happened

The owner of some team is watching his great grandson constantly playing his video janes on his Sexbox and talking about his Gameplan or something, and how much he loves the video janes on it, and so the owner calls up the league office and says the new MLB jame has to go on Sexbox Gameplan or else!

I doubt we'll see the ecosystems get forced together, though anything is possible.

A shared hardware platform is a different story all together, would make streaming an easier option for both and reduce console R&D. Both could still release a branded console that only played their software, just in a differing skin (auto manufactures do deals like this all the time, especially on the lower profit models). Would likely lower dev costs as well.

I doubt Sony will let SIE go but so far they don't seem to give a shit about SIE, all their investments are going towards, Music, Anime, Hollywood, AI & semi conductors.

SIE seems like to not get any money compared to others, I mean Sony Pictures & Music have spend around 5/6B in the last years alone In major acquisitions, meanwhile SIE closes shit down.

It's just straight facts, I don't think Sony will sell SIE but all points towards that.

I have to wonder if MS went to MLB, or Sony? If it’s MLB, I understand. If it was Sony, one has to wonder if any upcoming Bethesda games might have something to do with it.

“K, you can have MLB day and date, as well as on Game Pass, don’t forget this kindness when a major Bethesda game comes out” type of thing?

I don’t know. It’s fascinating to think about, though.

lol i know some of you want to look for a silver lining in this but no.
Besides the Xbox version is being published by MLB, not Playstation.

Look, I really REALLY hate console wars. But since PlayStation fanboys have been shitting on Xbox players for 7 years now it's nice to see the tables have turned.

investing to replace SIE revenue streams in areas where they aren't competing against Facebook or Microsoft?

kinda sad, as I have nostalgia for playstation.

You’re right, straight up talk, no funny business, no trolling, no whatever, Sony is showing all the signs that they don’t mind gambling with the PlayStation brand and use it as piggy bank. Meanwhile MS and Tencent are like “Videogames are big ass business, and it’s only going to get bigger, let’s put pedal to the metal”

Just because it's on GP once, doesn't mean it will be on there again.

Xbox hasn't had a decent baseball game in forever, as a result interest is probably low overall amongst Xbox only players. MLB probably wanted to do this to grease the wheels a bit on Xbox, get users in the swing again. The publishers are always in total control, if a GP deal hurts them financially they won't be back or will be sure to negotiate differently next time.
But I feel this is such a boss checkmate move that MS would want to replicate it every year -- even if it comes at the cost of adding some other game on GP.

If MLB thinks it wasn't profitable to put the game on GP, they will likely ask for more money from MS for the deal next year, which I think MS will be happy to pay

Microsoft is going so god damned hard on Game Pass... I would recommend everyone take advantage while you can. It won’t last forever.. but if you get on board now you will be quite pleased for a few years at the very least. It’s an absolute no brainer. I’ll probably never buy a game 😂

I’m paying like 5 dollars a month for GPU for the next 3 years. and they are handing out free months like candy. I have a couple of free months from Roll Up The Rim @ Tim Hortons that I can’t even redeem yet cause my account is maxed out. And I’ll have another month soon from Microsoft rewards.. which takes like 5 minutes a day.

Somehow I get the sinking feeling that the PS version would have gotten the most optimization time. I don't know why, it's like a sixth sense.

crystal ball GIF by Fall Out Boy
Not necessarily the most optimization time, but devs' familiarity (years of experience) with the PS environment will just make it naturally easier to optimize for PS than Xbox (which would be the first time working on the platform).

I was commenting on what you said about Sony pulling out....I was saying that is only likely if this was done behind their backs which doesn't seem to the case since a Sony studio worked on it. I suppose the gamepass deal could have been a secret. Who knows.

i do believe this was done behind their backs because the MLB and sony renewed the contract license. the MLB doesn't have to inform sony about any negotiations past the PS platform. the deal is to continue the development of the game and carry the license onto other platforms. the gamepass deal is beyond sonys touch and they have no say nor do they have to know about said deal because the MLB owns the license and is publishing on all other platforms but sony.

Just curious do u have the numbers backing this all up? That other Sony divisions get more attention?

I don't think I was saying otherwise. I was making the distinction between development and game pass. Sony would have to know about developing the game since their team was going to work on it. Game Pass could be a secret deal which could influence what Sony does. But I don't think that will happen.

Weird how MS games that are «selling like trash» are being released in steam years after their initial console release while ALREADY being available on gamepass AND are selling millions of copies on steam. I mean sea of thieves did what, 2 million in its first month on steam at FULL price ? Same with Forza Horizon 4 and Halo MCC. Halo infinite will do 6-8 million just on steam easily , at FULL price. People are running away with this «MS games aren’t selling» way too much. I mean MS is a service company in all of their businesses but they decided to make a videogames’ subscription service and invest billions because .....quantum break and sunset overdrive underperformed ......

I might not be able to get the Sony games (for 80€ pop) but I will be more than happy with Starfield, Halo infinite, Avowed, Hellblade 2, Fable, Forza horizon 5, Forza 8, Perfect Dark, the next Doom, Wolfenstein 3, next Elder Scrolls and Fallout games and many more on day one on a subscription service that costs less than 2 PlayStation games per year plus a ton of new and catalogue third party games at the same service.

Yeah, I think right now is the best time to take advantage of game pass. Microsoft will likely make deals like these until their first party line up is ready so they can finally deliver completely on one of the key benefits of first party being day one.
