I wont be playing the game, unless this deal also covers PC Gamepass (is this game even coming to PC, i dont know). And yes Sony may well feel they have to put this on PSNow for the good PR. I just hope if they do, they dont decide its not worth making the game anymore in the future because of all this. Even though they don't publish it anymore MLB does, What do you think the reaction would be if this was exclusive to Xbox? We already got people pissed because it isn't exclusive to Playstation. Somewhere out there we got deathreats now.

Adverse reaction? No shit. Putting games on PC is one of the most consumer friendly things MS/Sony can do. Imagine not having to arbitrarily be locked in to one piece of hardware to play a game and having the choice of buying it and playing it where you want to. The only people who say otherwise are creepy little possessive Gollum ‘my precious’ types that think they are special for owning a piece of hardware worth a couple of hundred quid.

Think about what you are saying. The game is still on PS, the game will still be the exact same game as it would of been without this news.
You're basically losing it because other gamer sections will also be able to play the game.
And you never know, Sony may end up putting it on PSNow because of this news, and you would win then, if its the money you are worrying about.

From a straight business perspective this move makes total sense once you realize the shots are not being called by Sony but rather by MLB as the actual publisher. However this straight up is a savage game business move for Xbox and Phil to get a beloved Sony Exclusive, developed by Sony game on to Game Pass Day 1 and Sony itself not having the same for PSNow. Its the "This is how we share games" moment of 2021 so far.

In terms of the dynamics unfolding at the moment the start of this gen feels very similar to the start of the 360/ps3 generation. The saving grace for Sony is that the hardware seems to be well sorted this time. But everything else? The momentum is swinging away from them and they only have themselves to blame.

Every decision that is being made at the moment seems to be heavily based around money and it's at the expense of people who own PlayStation platforms. There's nothing wrong with making lots of money of course, all companies strive to do exactly that, but the question for consumers ultimately becomes what are we getting in exchange?

Right now it looks like an increasingly raw deal.

It makes no sense. PSNow has been basically left for dead, WWS is shrinking instead of expanding, games going to PC, game prices going up... now a Sony game is on Gamepass day 1 and 70$ on PlayStation.

Sales figures are sure going to be interesting, because if they are down substantially YoY I cannot see the franchise continuing without MLB underwriting the majority of the dev-cost.

I mean the objective reality is that this is likely to hurt sales the most in the one territory that gives a toss about the MLB. I mean, yes Sony could give it away as part of Plus, but objectively wouldn't that be an even bigger slap in the face for fans who buy the game at launch on Playstation?

Haven't bought an MLB game since Triple Play 98 on PlayStation One but seeing MLB The Show 21 on Game Pass Day fucking One, oh man, I may be playing a baseball game for the first time since then.

What a great fucking day!!! Can't wait to see what's next...maybe Nier Replicant, BioMutant or even Resident Evil VIII: Village!!! Let's go baby!!! Like I have said for over a year, Microsoft and Phil Spencer are no longer fucking around. PS fanboys had their laughs and jokes for the last decade but are now sitting in the corner crying and in some cases (on resetera) are even questioning why own a PS5??? And here I always thought it was all about the games. I guess not. Oh well.

I don't know what's going on, either. They've had a really bad last couple of weeks, with the announced closure of the PS Store on PS3/PSP/PS Vita, and now this.

If they want to satisfy their current base of PS4/PS5 players, then they're going to have to make a sudden decision to match or exceed this.

I don't think they'll put it on PS Plus right now. They might decide to put it on PS Now, as it would give that service a great boost in subscriptions (since PS Plus has so many more subscribers already).

Also, historically speaking, PS Plus games remain accessible to the user as long as the subscription remains active. On PS Now, they sometimes include a time limit before the game leaves the service and becomes inaccessible.

Sony really does have a tough decision here:

1. If they add it to either service, then they would be potentially be giving up tens of millions of dollars in lost sales.
2. If they don't add it to either service, then it looks like a slap in the face to their most loyal fans, seeing that a competing console has the game for "free" with their subscription service. This would probably cause a good number of fans to buy and support the other system and service much more heavily.

Sony loses money either way. They probably lose more money in the short term with the first option, but stand to lose a lot more money and suffer damage to their reputation in the long term with the second option.

They will lose sales on consoles and this game, and credibility on PS community. A game made by Sony is now better offer on his rival. Much PS4 were sold by this franchise, now could move more Xbox units, I think this a disaster for Sony on marketing

It's not as simple as stick it on ps+, they only get a portion of the cost back rather than a full retail sale. It doesn't make sense given that's where the main player base is and is captive. They have no choice (unless they buy an Xbox).

It makes sense on Xbox. New game looking for an immediate loyal user base suddenly available for tens of million people to try and play. Which will no doubt convert into sales going forward when a certain number like the game.

They will. But my point was that PS users will have to buy the game for $70. Even the next-gen upgrade will be paid. Then they will look at the other side and see Xbox Gamepass users playing a PlayStation Studios game for no additional cost.

Knowing that Sony could release it on PS+ day one, but they didn't, would be frustrating.

P.S. I am not a fan of baseball (I don't even know how the game is played) so I wasn't gonna buy it anyway; I've never bought one. But if I were planning to get it day one on a PlayStation, I'd have felt the sting of this move by Xbox. I'd have wanted Sony to release the game on PS+ (or PS Now).

Not in the slightest. PS+ already gives more good games then I can play. I'm struggling to get through my backlog of games bought super cheap on sale to the point I hope ps plus doesn't give away another game I'd like to play.

I live in Europe and most of us don't ever think of Xbox. Every game ever could be free there and we still wouldn't care.

If Xbox gamers are happy then I'm happy for them because they've had a brutal last 10 years unless they owned another console or pc as well.

Don't forget the keyword here is no extra cost because GP isn't free or won't be in a few years when the $1 deals and and the price inevitably increases.

I personally prefer my current buying habits of buying games I want to play for €5-20 on sale and owning them.

I'm not talking about the rabid loonies on Internet forums. I think most reasonable people were OK with Sony porting over some of their first-party games to PC, and even with bringing MLB The Show 21 to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. These decisions don't affect the availability or quality of the games on PS4 or PS5.

With this particular situation of MLB The Show 21 appearing on Xbox Game Pass, there's a difference from a monetary perspective. PS4/PS5 owners (especially those who pay for PS Plus and/or PS Now) might feel somewhat jilted that players on a competing platform can get access to the game on day of release without even having to pay anything more for it, while they themselves have nothing to show for it. This type of situation can rapidly spread by word of mouth to the masses. If people perceive that another platform gives a significantly better deal on even Sony's own in--house developed games, then that's where the players will migrate to.
